While intelligent Quotient (IQ) has long been used as a predictor of student success, as the world enters the 21st century, research shows that Emotional intelligence (EI) is a better predictor of success than the more traditional measures of cognitive intelligence (Goleman, 1995). Emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to perceive emotions, to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge, to reflectively regulate emotions, to promote emotional and intellectual growth (Mayer & Salovery 1997). McQueen (2004) suggests that EI is highly predictive of an individual’s general domains such as career performance.

Just as the quality of teachers affects students’ academic success, the quality of school leadership is significantly related to student achievement, (Leithwood and Jantzi, 2000). The job of the school administrator is challenging in any set of circumstances, but the leadership in low and marginally performing schools presents additional and unique challenges. In fact, some districts are faced with the socio-economic circumstances often correlated with poor performance (Heck, 1992). Breaking the cycle of poverty for these students is much more likely to occur if the type of quality educational programming afforded to prospective school administrators is dramatically and innovatively enhanced.

Exploring Unique Dimensions Of Caring, Len Austin

This paper seeks to increase the growing body of knowledge relative to the “accompanying characteristics” or attendant attributes of caring (submissiveness, sacrifice, the ability to individualize, and being able to anticipate the needs of others). It also offers are four unique philosophical underpinnings of the attribute of caring. These dimensions include the reciprocal nature of caring, the hierarchical nature of caring, the requirement to be pro-active in caring, and being knowledgeable about the changing timetable of caring in people’s lives. In addition, an example of one university’s efforts to integrate caring across the curriculum is examined.
