Student Held Misconceptions Regarding Area And Perimeter Of Rectangles, Susan M. Carle
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Students enter the classroom with individual schemas, based on their experiences and ideas, which influence the reception, interpretation, and recollection of new information. Effective teachers must understand the implications of these existing schemas. As an experienced classroom teacher, the author finds students often manipulate and apply new information well in class, only to forget or alter the material a few weeks later;. When misconceptions are woven into schemas, they interfere with reception of information. This thesis examines specific student-held misconceptions about the area and perimeter of rectangles and the process of their identification and eradication. Identification of the misconception is …

Knuth's (1, 2, 1) Unstacking, Paul J. Zwier
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1993
This presentation is dedicated to Donald Knuth who has proposed many interesting and challenging problems in the Problems Section of The American Mathematical Monthly. The problem considered ist hat proposed by Barry Hayes, Knuth, and Carlos Subi (E3267 [1988,456]). The published solution, due to Albert Nijenhuis, just recently appeared in the March 1993 Monthly, pages 292-294.
The problem is as follows. Suppose that we are given n piles of blocks; the i-th pile having ai blocks, i = 1, 2, …, n. Dismantle the piles by choosing a pile having 2 or more blocks, removing …

Using American Sign Language With A Direct Instruction Mathematics Program To Affect The Mathematics Achievement Of Deaf Students, Annette J. Bass
Using American Sign Language With A Direct Instruction Mathematics Program To Affect The Mathematics Achievement Of Deaf Students, Annette J. Bass
Masters Theses
The effectiveness of supplemental instruction using a scripted direct instruction program, Connecting Math Concepts (Englemann & Carnine, 1992), with four lower elementary deaf students was compared to the effectiveness of supplemental instruction in their traditional math curriculum, Mathematics Today (Abbott, 1985). A two-phase multiple baseline design across students was used. During the first phase, the students' achievement on curricula-based math probes was assessed while using the Mathematics Today as a supplement. During the second phase, the students' achievement was assessed while using Connecting Math Concepts as a supplement. The teacher presentation scripts in this program were translated into American Sign …

A Comparison Of The Hutchings’ Low-Stress, Factor Analysis, Hand-Held Calculator, And Conventional Addition Algorithms For Speed, Accuracy, And Preference With Regular Education Students, John C. Hampel
Masters Theses
Three repeated measures experiments were conducted to determine the efficiency with which medium and low math-achieving, fourth- and fifth-grade students computed two sizes of addition problems using each of four different algorithms. The experimenter selected the conventional algorithm and the hand-held calculator because they are currently in popular use. The experimenter selected the Hutchings' low-stress and factor analysis algorithms because of their demonstrated performance enhancing characteristics and unique design features. The three written algorithms represented a design continuum that facilitated a powerful deductive analysis.
In all conditions the Hutchings' low-stress algorithm produced incrementally superior performance consistent with its unique features. …
A Meta-Analysis Of The Relative Effectiveness Of Two Cooperative Learning Models In Increasing Mathematics Achievement, Frances Burton Spuler
A Meta-Analysis Of The Relative Effectiveness Of Two Cooperative Learning Models In Increasing Mathematics Achievement, Frances Burton Spuler
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The meta-analysis compares two popular cooperative learning models, Student-Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD) and Teams-Games-Tournaments (TGT), for their relative effectiveness in increasing mathematics achievement of K-12 students. The findings of the available research were integrated to determine both the magnitude and the direction of the effects of the cooperative learning models and effect sizes were calculated. More studies comparing the TGT cooperative learning model with a traditional learning model (81% of the studies) resulted in statistically significant higher gains in mathematics achievement than studies comparing the STAD model with a traditional learning model (51% of the studies). Other measures of relative effectiveness …

Geological Field Guide To The Cedar Point Biological Station, Keith County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Roger K. Pabian
Geological Field Guide To The Cedar Point Biological Station, Keith County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Roger K. Pabian
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
This field guide was produced by staff members of the Conservation and Survey Division of the University of Nebraska originally in 1979 at the request of Dr. Brent Nickol, former Director of the Cedar Point Biological Station. It is an introduction to the geologic history and paleoecology of the Cedar Point area intended for students, staff, and other persons using the camp. This revision has been made some 15 years after the first version to reflect changes in ideas resulting from new data collected during that time.
Users of this guide should take care when studying the rock exposures described …
