Procedures For Setting Up A Remedial Reading Program In The Secondary Schools, Bradley Richardson May 1978

Procedures For Setting Up A Remedial Reading Program In The Secondary Schools, Bradley Richardson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The need for a more comprehensive education in the secondary school is a need which no one will deny; and as reading is the primary means through which most formal education takes place, the need for expert readers is ever-present. The tragedy of so many high school students graduating without having mastered the skill of reading reminds us that schools are not succeeding in its task of educating. One important area where secondary schools can improve their attempts at reaching the students who are passing through without learning is to set up a reading program designed to help those students …

Non-Formal Education

A Training Program For Use With Aides And Volunteers In A Middle School Remedial Reading And Language Arts Program, Jeanette Johnson

All Graduate Projects

This project consists of three parts. Chapter 1 establishes the need for more concentrated teaching of poor readers among school children and suggests volunteer tutors as a possible source of help. Chapter 2 examines the history of tutoring by non-professionals and concludes that volunteers can indeed be effective tutors, but that appropriate training is a crucial factor. Chapter 3, the main part of the project, presents a set of ten training modules each consisting of taped instructions and accompanying printed material. The script for each tape is included in this paper.

Construction, Administration, And Validation Of A Test Of Oral Language Usage, Ronald Harrison Jan 1978

Construction, Administration, And Validation Of A Test Of Oral Language Usage, Ronald Harrison

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We as teacher of English are faced with the task of preparing students for the world they will meet when they leave the classroom—a world that will judge them in part by their ability to manipulate the language to their advantage. And yet to measure the use of language, we rely almost exclusively on written measurements. It seems likely that students may easily learn to give the teacher the answer he wants on written tests of English usage. Oral tests are commercially available, but many are prohibitively expensive; others require hours of instruction before the teacher can consider himself qualified …

Competitiveness, Cooperativeness, And Assigning Grades In The High School Classroom, Nelson Edward Evans Jan 1978

Competitiveness, Cooperativeness, And Assigning Grades In The High School Classroom, Nelson Edward Evans

Dissertations

Problem. Currently, educators and psychologists have been rejecting the generally favorable position competition has held as a motivator and value within education. This study focused on teacher and student orientations varying as cooperative or competitive and the effect that they can have on student grades. That the interaction among students and teachers varying by orientation may prove counter-productive in the classroom is a crucial concern for both educators and students. It was hypothesized that dissimilarly oriented teachers and students would result in lowered grades for students. Independent variables were chosen in accordance with this major hypothesis which was divided into …
