Effect Of Stroke Rate On The Velocity/Time Curve Of A Rowing Shell, John S. Bernfield Aug 1977

Effect Of Stroke Rate On The Velocity/Time Curve Of A Rowing Shell, John S. Bernfield

Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education Master’s Theses

The 1976 U. S. Olympic eight oared crew was filmed (16 mm, 70 FPS) rowing six trials each at stroke rates of 37, 39, and 41 st/min. Shell instantaneous velocity was calculated and plotted for positions throughout the stroke cycle and a cubic spline curve fit to these data points. Time and percentage of total time for leg drive, upper body drive, transition, hands and upper body away, seat movement, and blades to water phases of the stroke cycle were determined. In addition, actual stroke rate, boat average velocity, and curve amplitude were calculated for each trial. Data was ...

The Relationship Between Teacher Enthusiasm And Student Involvement During Motor Skill Activities, Eileen Mcelroy Aug 1977

The Relationship Between Teacher Enthusiasm And Student Involvement During Motor Skill Activities, Eileen Mcelroy

Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education Master’s Theses

Due to the presumed effects a teacher's enthusiasm (T.E.) has upon a student, and the importance of student involvement (S.I.) in an activity, this investigation studied these behaviors as they occurred in the physical education setting. Two specifically designed descriptive-analytic coding systems were developed appropriate to the target behaviors. The subjects were five physical education teachers and a randomly selected student from one of each of their classes. The subjects were video taped, with a separate camera for each teacher and student. Three coders per system were trained until at least 80% inter-coder reliability was attained. The ...

A Comparison Of Three Training Programs In Developing Cardiovascular Fitness In Untrained Women, Carol S. Hovey Jul 1977

A Comparison Of Three Training Programs In Developing Cardiovascular Fitness In Untrained Women, Carol S. Hovey

Student Work

Interval training is defined by Fox and Mathews (1974) as a series of repeated bouts of exercise alternated with periods of rest or relief. Much research has been done comparing different intensities, durations, and work-relief ratios in interval training, and how these affect the development. of the various physiological systems of the body. Little, however, has been done to compare the development of aerobic power with the duration and intensity of the work interval varied, with frequency per week held constant. Research in this area has been especially limited using untrained women as subjects. Rosentswieg and Burrhus (1975) point out ...

Laterality: Motor Learning & The Non-Dominant Hand, Rella Nase Jul 1977

Laterality: Motor Learning & The Non-Dominant Hand, Rella Nase

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The cultural design of the United States of America has caught up its left-handed individuals in a righthander's world. Daily the left-hander or sinistral is forced to cope with problems which present themselves only to sinistrals, posing no difficulty to right-handers or dextrals. It was the intention of this investigation to determine whether, as a result of this emphasis on dextrality training, sinistrals could more quickly learn motor tasks with the non -dominant hand than could dextrals.

The hypothesis upon which the investigation was founded was stated in null form: no significant difference exists between motor learning displayed by ...

A Comparison Of Leadership Potential Between Physical Education And Recreation Majors At Utah State University, Karolyn Carroll May 1977

A Comparison Of Leadership Potential Between Physical Education And Recreation Majors At Utah State University, Karolyn Carroll

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare the leadership potential of students from upper level division students majoring in Physical Education as compared to students majoring in Recreation. Two psychological tests were utilized to measure leadership potential between these groups. They were the Leadership Ability Evaluation and the Leadership Q-Sort Test, which yielded data in 12 variables. Analysis of this data revealed that there was significant difference at the .05 level in three of the twelve variables. A comparison of all means for the two tests favored the Recreation majors over the Physical Education majors in leadership potential. In ...

A Study Of Self-Actualization Among Various Groups Of Male Intercollegiate Athletes At The University Of The Pacific, Peter C. Carroll

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of self-actualization (SA) as measured by the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) among various groups of male intercollegiate athletes at the University of the Pacific. The subjects (N = 111) were golf (N = 8), tennis (N = 5), swimming (N = 6), baseball (N = 25), basketball (N = 14), and football (N = 53). The subjects were categorized into three sub-groups: (1) individuals sport members (golf, tennis, swimming) and team sport members (baseball, basketball, football); (2) good players, regular players, and substitutes; and (3) upper-division athletes and lower-division athletes.
