A Historical Analysis Of Special Education Services In Conservative Christian Schools Since 1950, Kristi-Lynn Craig

Master of Education Research Theses

This study examines the historical progression of the availability of special education in Conservative Christian Schools in the United States since 1950. Due to the limited nature of research in this field, a historical analysis was used to better understand how the development of special education in Conservative Christian Schools compares to the development of special education in Public Schools. After analyzing the literature, four key turning points were identified. In addition, the significant roles of funding and Biblical support were examined. This thesis made recommendations for future, continued research and poses suggestions for Conservative Christian Schools to consider regarding ...

Bibliotherapy Intervention Exposure And Level Of Emotional Awareness Among Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Elaine Harper

Educators and mental health professionals search for interventions to help students with emotional and behavioral problems. Bibliotherapy, the therapeutic use of literature, has been a widely used yet sparsely researched intervention. Research regarding bibliotherapy and students' emotional awareness is absent. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among bibliotherapy intervention exposure, level of emotional awareness, and characteristics of students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Archival data sets from 182 students ages 6 - 13 in day treatment were analyzed in this study. One archival data set was scores from the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale for Children (LEAS-C ...

The Impacts Of Co-Teaching On The General Education Student, Alicia Parker Jan 2010

The Impacts Of Co-Teaching On The General Education Student, Alicia Parker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2004-2019

The purpose of this study was to investigate four research questions concerning the impact of co-teaching on general education students educated within a classroom inclusion model. General education students who received instruction during their 10th-grade year in a co-taught language arts or mathematics class were compared with other 10th-grade students receiving instruction from the same teacher but without the additional co-teacher. Achievement data from the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test (FCAT) were gathered on these students. The state of Florida calculates and reports developmental scale scores (DSS) for students taking the FCAT. These scores are calculated to track student progress over ...

Inclusionary Practices: Impact Of Administrators' Beliefs On Placement Decisions, Maria Vazquez Jan 2010

Inclusionary Practices: Impact Of Administrators' Beliefs On Placement Decisions, Maria Vazquez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2004-2019

School leaders are charged with responding to the challenges presented by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the education of students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. The idea of least restrictive environment moves schools from educating students with disabilities in special education to regular education classrooms, from special education schools to neighborhood schools. Providing inclusive settings poses many obstacles and challenges to school based administrators and in their capacity school leaders can either alleviate or generate barriers for the process; they can inhibit or inspire school personnel to accept the inclusion of students with disabilities in the ...

Examining The Beliefs And Practices Of Effective School Leaders As They Relate To Serving Students With Disabilities, Kimberly Steinke Jan 2010

Examining The Beliefs And Practices Of Effective School Leaders As They Relate To Serving Students With Disabilities, Kimberly Steinke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2004-2019

As academic reform movements push schools to provide more rigorous learning environments for students, it is essential that the "person in charge" at the school level be prepared and capable of meeting the demands of high stakes measures that affect critical dimensions of school life. Educational leaders today face a significant amount of pressure to improve the quality of education at all levels and across all disciplines. While school leaders face the pressures of No Child Left Behind in terms of increased student performance, they must also be concerned about serving students with disabilities appropriately. The purpose of this study ...

The Impact Of Inclusion On The Academic Achievement Of High School Special Education Students, Harold Smith Dawkins

Education Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation examined the impact of inclusion on the academic achievement outcome of high school special education students as measured by English 1, biology, and algebra 1 as a function of gender, ethnicity, and years of inclusion. The study also examined the generalizations with confidence that could be made about the use of inclusion methodology in high schools within an urban North Carolina school district as measured by end-of-course test scale scores. Data from three traditional high schools within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District were used in this study. High school special education students lagged behind several other subgroups on end-of-course ...

Self-Regulatory Training For Helping Students With Special Needs To Learn Mathematics, Yanrong Kang Jan 2010

Self-Regulatory Training For Helping Students With Special Needs To Learn Mathematics, Yanrong Kang

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research suggests that self-regulation interventions are effective in improving students' self-regulatory skill and school performance in a wide variety of educational domains. Inspired by social cognitive theory (Schunk & Zimmerman, 1997) and goal setting theory (Locke & Latham, 1990), I designed, implemented, and examined the beneficial impact of a two-part intervention to teacher effective self-regulation (i.e., goal setting and self-reflection) of 62 high school students with special needs (40 males, 22 females) during in-class math instruction. Results indicate that the two-part intervention led to high self-efficacy judgments and to better math performance compared to students with special needs who were ...

What Training Do Rochester-Area Special Education Co-Teachers Receive In Co-Teaching?, Meghan Marie Alkire Jan 2010

What Training Do Rochester-Area Special Education Co-Teachers Receive In Co-Teaching?, Meghan Marie Alkire

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

The goal for this study was to create a list of techniques for co-teachers based on the components of co-teaching for which the co-teachers feel least prepared for. In order to do this, teachers completed a survey to determine how prepared they feel to teach in a co-teaching classroom. The data was collected from special education teachers who are co-teaching currently in a Rochester City School. The techniques for co-teachers would address what training is needed for co-teaching to help strength co-teaching in the classroom.
