The purpose of this evaluation was to examine if a school’s culture impacts student academic achievement due to initial low attainment on state assessments and low graduation rates. The data collected provides both quantitative and qualitative information using a teacher survey, a teacher focus group, administrator interviews, and school achievement data. The results of the study indicate a need for stronger trust between teachers and administrators, increased professional development to support teaching and learning, and improved partnerships with the parents/guardians of the students. This qualitative case study investigated the two highest math growth rates at two Title I schools in a mid-size, Midwestern school district. This research focused on the leadership factors that may have attributed to the math growth rate. Open-ended interviews, structured interviews, surveys, focus groups, and document analysis were used to collect data. This study uncovered the leadership factors teachers and principals attributed to the math growth rate. Trends in academic statistics show a decline in enrollment, academic achievement, and program completion for Black male students in higher education. Research indicates a decline in Black student enrollments and graduation rates. This single qualitative case study was an exploration of perceptions of mentorship for Black male students among faculty and staff in higher education. Using social capital theory as a theoretical framework, the researcher analyzed the perceptions of mentorship by way of semistructured interviews with five faculty and staff members and five Black male students at a Texas university. Recent empirical research studies indicate that reflective self-assessment as a classroom approach can have a positive impact on student achievement. Reflective self-assessment, a form of metacognition, allows a student to think about past, current, and future learning performance. Although several discrete empirical studies have supported such hypotheses, a quantified exploration and summary of the relationship between classroom techniques of reflective self-assessment and student academic achievement is needed. The results of the current study, a meta-analysis of surveyed empirical studies from the past 26 years, indicate that reflective self-assessment has an overall effect size of .46 on academic achievement across grade …

This quantitative study examined the relationship between eighth grade ELA MAAP achievement and DRP score in lowest performing students. For this research study, lowest performing students are students who scored in the bottom 25% of their class on the eighth grade ELA MAAP during the 2016–2017 school year. This study included a total population sample of 87 students who were in ninth grade during the 2017–2018 school year at a public high school in Mississippi and who were identified as lowest performing on the 2016–2017 eighth grade ELA MAAP. However, some high school graduates do not meet college readiness benchmarks and must take remedial noncredit courses in college (Adams, 2013; Butrymowicz, 2017). Growth mindset and religiosity as separate constructs have been shown to increase student achievement. This study sought to discover if a relationship existed between religiosity and mindset, as well as if mindset or religiosity could predict math achievement. A mixed methods study, guided by Brofenbrenner’s bioecological model, was conducted. This non-experimental quantitative study found a small statistically significant relationship between mindset and religiosity (p < .05). However, religiosity and mindset were not correlated with math achievement; therefore, these constructs could not be used to predict math achievement. The purpose of this applied action research study was to close the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged (ED) students and their non-disadvantaged peers (non-Ed) through the implementation of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) system of processes.
