The meager mathematical performance of the Black male student has been a well-documented event that was well over 30 years in the making. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the literature on 9th grade urban Black Male Algebra performance and to identify the existence of any early predictors of high school Algebra I failure. The current study addressed the use of instructional coaches in a suburban high school district. Teacher perceptions of both the qualities of instructional coaches and the use of cooperative learning in the classroom were measured. Cooperative learning is a research-based instructional strategy that has a long history of increasing student achievement. The studied district used the Johnson and Johnson cooperative learning model, and adopted an instructional coaching model based on the work of Knight. This quantitative, quasi-experimental study examined the relationships between self-efficacy and reading achievement as mediated by an online instructional delivery system called MobyMax® over a period of time between a pretest and a posttest. The sources of self-efficacy were also investigated for the individual contribution of each of the four sources; process accomplishments or mastery experiences, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and physiological states. Finally, the current study explored the relationships across gender and ethnicity (White, Black, Hispanic, and other). The number of professional doctorates offered by universities has grown rapidly since the 1990s. Research has shown that professional doctorates offer relevant doctoral education in order to meet the needs of the modern workplace. Universities must understand both the needs of the marketplace and the needs of students, and determine the best use of limited resources for recruiting, in order to offer doctoral programs that meet marketplace and students’ needs.
