The Origin And Development Of The Open Air School, Marion Frances Quinn Aug 1946

The Origin And Development Of The Open Air School, Marion Frances Quinn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Open Air Schools came into existence because people had found a need for them. Some children were for one reason or another not profiting by a regular school routine. There were several causes for this. One cause was that some children had come in contact with tuberculosis and scientific studies showed that the tuberculosis germs could be best treated by out-of-door rest and good nourishing food. Other children were malnourished so didn’t have the resistance to fight off colds and tiredness. Still others had had operations and were not strong enough to attend a regular school.

Open Air Schools are …

Negro Training In An Industrialized Democracy, Willard Potter Aug 1946

Negro Training In An Industrialized Democracy, Willard Potter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study has to do with the training of the Negro in an industrial democracy in which the national government once assumed the direct responsibility for such training, as well as with the results which were incurred when this government relinquished its role as administrator. It will be pointed out how the lassitude of able and gifted minds during the past century in regard to the Negro question led to haphazard efforts, on the part of inspired philanthropists and zealous home missionaries, to educate the Negro; and how such attitude brought about a Negro psychology of "accommodation’’ in the South …

The Opportunity Class Of The Mary D. Hill School., Gladys E. Wyatt Jun 1946

The Opportunity Class Of The Mary D. Hill School., Gladys E. Wyatt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In almost every classroom in the country there are overage boys and girls, retarded children who have been pushed along through school after repeated failures have convinced both them and their teachers and companions that they are of little consequence. Since not much can be done to remedy the situation after so many years, the only solution in most cases is to pass the children along as rapidly as possible, allowing them to sit in the successive grades where the intellectual tasks are completely beyond their limited abilities. Here they acquire more bad habits and often become personality or behavior …

Non-Attendance And Ways To Improve Attendance In West Virginia, Richard Erwin Mccoy Jan 1946

Non-Attendance And Ways To Improve Attendance In West Virginia, Richard Erwin Mccoy

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Partial completion of a task undertaken will never enable the participant to secure the full joy that accomplishment will bring. For a child to start this trend in the early stages of his training may lead to a thwarted aim, as well as, muted ambitions or incomplete behavior patterns. It has been the discouraging role of principals and teachers to observe the regressive effects of non-attendance upon children in the public schools. They have seen pupils who were doing good work in schools start being absent, their work become of poorer quality, until it was apparent the child would be …

Some 1500 houses have been built in one such section, alone, and the total, to January 1, 1945, included 2,504 residences and 171 multiple unit dwellings.2

War activities, within the city and the neighboring communities, have attracted large numbers of defense workers and these have …

A Study Of Form And Content For A Laboratory Manual To Be Used By Students In General Chemistry Laboratory, Berne P. Broadbent Jan 1946

A Study Of Form And Content For A Laboratory Manual To Be Used By Students In General Chemistry Laboratory, Berne P. Broadbent

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was carried out for general chemistry classes in which recitation and laboratory work are closely integrated and in which very close supervision is given to laboratory classes. Results indicate that there are fewer failures under these conditions if students do individual work. Students receiving grades of over 80% seem to work just as effectively in pairs as they do when working individually, but about 5% who fail when working in pairs could, apparently obtain grades above 60% if they did individual work. The formal full statement type of report is substantially more effective than the questionaire report as …
