Professional Learning Communities And Student Outcomes: A Quantitative Analysis Of The Plc At Work Model In Arkansas Schools, Kate Barnes, Sarah Mckenzie
Arkansas Education Reports
This study evaluates the impact of the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at Work model on student achievement and growth in Arkansas schools. Implemented through a partnership between the Arkansas Department of Education and Solution Tree, the program promotes collaborative professional development among educators. Using a matching process and an event study framework, we analyze longitudinal data on student performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics from multiple cohorts of schools.
The overall results reveal mixed outcomes. While no statistically significant improvements were observed in overall student achievement or growth, there were concerning trends for economically disadvantaged students. This subgroup …

Barriers Experienced By First Nations Deaf People In The Justice System, Brent Elder, Karen Soldatic, Michael A. Schwartz, Jody Barney, Damien Howard, Patrick Mcgee
College of Education Departmental Research
Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that members of the First Nations Deaf community experience more barriers when engaging with the criminal justice system than those who are not deaf. Therefore, our purpose for writing this article is to highlight legal and policy issues related to First Nations Deaf people, including perspectives of professionals working with these communities, living in Australia who have difficulty in accessing supports within the criminal justice system. In this article, we present data from semi-structured qualitative interviews focused on four key themes: (a) indefinite detention and unfit to plead, (b) a need for an intersectional approach to …

A multi-disciplinary UMass Boston team of researchers through the Early Education Cost and Usage Simulator Project (CUSP) seeks to better understand some of the impacts of expanding financial assistance to families for child care and early education. The team has developed and uses a statistical model that simulates parents’ decisions about care usage to estimate how much more licensed care might be needed in Massachusetts and what employment and income changes may take place with increased utilization of affordable licensed quality child care and early education. The team’s October 2023 brief provided findings for all families and children in the …

Master's level counseling students completed a 5-week online asynchronous LGBTQ+ affirmative counseling training. Using a mixed-methods and quasi-experimental design, results indicated that participants’ LGBTQ+ knowledge, clinical skills, and advocacy increased posttraining. Content analysis revealed four themes of how students experienced the training. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

International Education’S Academic Benefit: Potential For Community College Virtual International Exchange, Melissa Whatley
School of Education Articles
This study focuses on the potential academic benefit of virtual international exchange for community colleges and the students they enroll through a comparison of virtual exchange and study abroad. Using data from two community colleges in the US Southeast, this study draws upon the notion of socioacademic integration. Specifically, this study theorizes that both virtual exchange and study abroad have a positive relationship with students’ academic outcomes given their potential to foster socioacademic integrative moments. How- ever, given the scalability of virtual international exchange, it was expected that these programs are associated with a greater relationship to students’ academic outcomes …

Learning Through Play At School Ukraine: Final Research Report (Ukrainian Version), Rachel Parker, Amy Berry, David Jeffries, Prue Anderson, Oksana Zabolotna
Student learning processes
The Learning Through Play (LTP) at School Research Study Ukraine was a four-year intervention study funded by the LEGO Foundation and implemented by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and the Ukrainian Educational Research Association (UERA). The intervention was a two-year professional learning program that blended online, and face-to-face learning called the Teacher Innovative Play Program (TIPP). The TIPP was designed based on documented evidence that reports that teachers need opportunities to experiment and reflect to change practice. The study was guided by three research questions which were revised following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces …

Learning Through Play At School: Ukraine, 2019-2024 (Ukrainian Version), Rachel Parker, Amy Berry, Kellie Picker, David Jeffries, Prue Anderson, Oksana Zabolotna
Student learning processes
The Learning Through Play at School Research Study Ukraine was a four-year longitudinal intervention study funded by the LEGO Foundation and implemented by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and the Ukrainian Educational Research Association (UERA). The study was implemented between 2019 and 2024, during COVID-19 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces. Despite, at times, insurmountable challenges, the professional learning intervention was successful in supporting most teachers to progress from a surface level understanding of learning through play to a deep level. In addition, almost all children’s literacy and social-emotional skills grew significantly from start …
Aspects Of The Informal Economy That Influence Voluntary Contributions To Social Security Fund, Nyagwegwe Wango
Aspects Of The Informal Economy That Influence Voluntary Contributions To Social Security Fund, Nyagwegwe Wango
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
The study explored the factors within the informal economy that drive voluntary contributions to social security funds, presenting findings across three key attributes: economic, social, and institutional. Voluntary contributions were evident in all three associations studied. Economic incentives, such as loans and cash assistance during sickness and death, motivated members to contribute willingly. Additionally, the allowance for small contributions during regular meetings further facilitated participation. The study found that these meetings fostered member engagement and provided social benefits. Regularly scheduled meetings, as stipulated in the associations’ constitutions, helped to organize and structure the associations. The frameworks, including rules and regulations, …

Applying The 6e Learning By Design Model To Support Student Teachers To Integrate Artificial Intelligence Applications In Their Classroom, Musa Saimon, Fredrick Mtenzi, Zsolt Lavicza, Kristóf Fenyvesi, Maik Arnold, José Manuel Diego-Mantecón
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
The 6E Learning by Design (LbD) model can enhance student teachers’ development of competence for integrating technologies in the classrooms including Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, teacher educators rarely use the 6E LbD model in supporting and encouraging student teachers to integrate AI applications in their classrooms effectively. To attract teacher educators to use the 6E LbD model, in the present study, we modeled learning activities for each phase. We also examined the impact of the 6E LbD model in supporting student teachers to integrate AI in the classroom. We adopted a Participatory Action Research approach implemented in two cycles. We …

Enhancing Student Engagement In Introductory Economics With Interactive Videos And Synthesized Readings In Flipped Learning, Bei Hong, Duan Ning, Magdeleine Lew
Research Collection School Of Economics
A major challenge faced by university economics instructors is to find more time to incorporate active learning into the classroom, which encourages student participation. As a result, more instructors choose to flip their classrooms, in which students are encouraged to perform preparatory reading or watch videos to participate more meaningfully and learn more effectively. This study aims to examine how pre-lecture materials enhance student participation by examining the effectiveness of two types of materials: interactive videos and synthesized readings. The synthesized readings contain essential information extracted from the textbook and is presented in a structured manner with highlighted key points. …
