Quantum chemistry has been a staple of undergraduate curricula for several decades. For the most part, however, it has been the rare course in quantum chemistry that advances much beyond the hydrogen atom (or perhaps H2) in terms of describing the electronic structure of real molecular systems. Driven in part by staggering advances in computer technology during the last 15 years or so, which have rendered possible on a laptop calculations that once would have taxed the largest mainframes available, this situation now seems to be changing (1–3).

This presentation is focused on the requirements for English in the final year of schooling in Victoria over the past 50 years. For at least the last half-century, the subject "English" has held a significant place in the final year of secondary education in Victoria. From 1950 — 2001 English has been a compulsory requirement for the completion of the Year 12 certificate, in the various forms that certificate has taken, from Matriculation in the 1950s, to the current Victorian Certificate of Education. NC State’s involvement in the NSF-sponsored SUCCEED Coalition has led to a number of changes to the freshman year of the engineering curriculum as reported previously (e.g., ASEE 1999, Porter, et al.). An explicit objective of these changes was to retain in engineering those students who were qualified and interested in engineering, but were leaving engineering for other reasons. While a number of isolated innovations have been studied and have demonstrated positive benefit, this study looks at each freshman cohort from 1987 through 1998 to evaluate changes in retention in engineering during that period. Criterion 2 [Program Educational Objectives (PEO)] is arguably the most important part of ABET EC2000. PEO embody the broad vision for an engineering program that drives the overall accreditation process. They also provide a crucial nexus point for the assessment of each program, the point at which the programmatic issues of the other EC2000 criteria—curriculum, faculty, facilities, etc.—are considered within the larger context of the needs of key constituencies of the program and the mission of the institution. When Froebel was growing up in the late eighteenth century, young children under the age of seven didn't attend school. There was no general education curriculum geared toward young children and no socially recognized value in attempting to teach them (Brosterman, 1997). Friedrich Froebel, through his experience with young children, was the first to see that “constructive, directed” play was extremely beneficial for children under the age of seven. Before admission to the college of education, students at a large, predominantly White public university in the Southeast are required to complete a state-mandated course on diversity issues. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to diversity and effective ways of addressing it in future classrooms as a result of changing demographics. Often, students experience resistance to diversity issues because their current understandings or beliefs may not coincide with the information presented in class. Luego de contextualizar la "educación superior" que se impartió durante la colonia en la Nueva España, el trabajo describe, con base a la literatura histórica pertinente, diversos aspectos de la "profesión académica" durante ese periodo. Así, se discute la naturaleza del trabajo académico característico de esa época, la forma en que se impartían las clases, la contratación de nuevos profesores y las relaciones entre el profesorado y la burocracia gubernamental y eclesiástica con la que se relacionaban los catedráticos ("académicos") de la Real y Pontifica Universidad de México.

Alternative discourses are works that attempt to debunk ideas that have become entrenched in the social sciences, partly as a result of colonialism and the continuing Eurocentrism in the social sciences. In the context of Southeast Asia as well as much of the non-Western world, alternative discourses in the social sciences could also be referred to collectively as counter- Eurocentric social science. Is the family subject to principles of justice? In A Theory of Justice, John Rawls includes the (monogamous) family along with the market and the government as among the "basic institutions of society" to which principles of justice apply. Justice, he famously insists, is primary in politics as truth is in science: the only excuse for tolerating injustice is that no lesser injustice is possible. While important normative work has been produced on various aspects of governance, including trusteeship (Cheit, Holland and Taylor, 1991; Kerr and Gade, 1989), institutional autonomy (Berdahl, 1990), and governance struc- tures (Richardson ct al., 1998) little theoretical inquiry has been devoted to two essential questions of governance: how arc key decisions actually made in the postsecondary sector, and who makes them? In light of shifting African American student enrollment patterns at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), this study examines admissions and recruitment materials mailed to prospective students from 13 HBCUs. The material was analyzed using factors from the Search stage of Hossler and Gallagher’s (1987) college choice model. Results revealed variations in quality among public and private Black Colleges. The significance of these results, specific recommendations for recruitment, and implications for future research are also included.

Browsing the NCTE bookstalls at the convention last year, I spied a new book by Deborah Appleman, Critical Encounters in High School English: Teaching Literacy Criticism to Adolescents (New York: Teachers College Press, 2000). Ha, I thought, right. Adolescents and phallologocentrism. Or semiotics. They'd love that. I remembered once mentioning literary criticism to a class of "average" juniors. Kyle, folded into his desk, looked at me with complete incredulity: "You mean people write books about other people's books?!" Yes, I assured him. He still looked disbelieving.

A new two-semester capstone senior design course sequence in the area of assistive technology has been developed and integrated within the established curriculum of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst. Entitled “Senior Design Projects to Aid the Disabled,” the capstone sequence includes close collaborations with the Lemelson Assistive Technology Development Center (LATDC) at Hampshire College and Adaptive Design Services (ADS) under the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation (DMR).
