Quantum chemistry has been a staple of undergraduate curricula for several decades. For the most part, however, it has been the rare course in quantum chemistry that advances much beyond the hydrogen atom (or perhaps H2) in terms of describing the electronic structure of real molecular systems. Driven in part by staggering advances in computer technology during the last 15 years or so, which have rendered possible on a laptop calculations that once would have taxed the largest mainframes available, this situation now seems to be changing (1–3).

Acquisition And Generalization Of Activity Schedules And Their Effects On Task Engagement In A Young Child With Autism In An Inclusive Pre-School Classroom, N. Gayle Massey, John J. Wheeler Aug 2001

Acquisition And Generalization Of Activity Schedules And Their Effects On Task Engagement In A Young Child With Autism In An Inclusive Pre-School Classroom, N. Gayle Massey, John J. Wheeler

John J. Wheeler

Efficacy of individualized activity schedules with a 4-year old child diagnosed with autism who attended an integrated public pre-school classroom was examined. Graduated physical guidance and a system of most-to-least prompts were used during skill acquisition stages with teacher proximity and level of prompts being eventually faded. A multiple baseline across activities (work and leisure) assessed performance across baseline, treatment, and maintenance conditions with stimulus generalization being assessed during a third activity (lunch). Results support the findings from MacDuff, Krantz, and McClannahan (1993) in that a child with autism can successfully acquire the skills necessary to independently follow activity schedules …

Reading In Year 12: A Retrospective Review., Marion Meiers

Marion Meiers (1941-2018)

This presentation is focused on the requirements for English in the final year of schooling in Victoria over the past 50 years. For at least the last half-century, the subject "English" has held a significant place in the final year of secondary education in Victoria. From 1950 — 2001 English has been a compulsory requirement for the completion of the Year 12 certificate, in the various forms that certificate has taken, from Matriculation in the 1950s, to the current Victorian Certificate of Education. In the context of a national conference on the teaching of English, an historical case study contextualised …

Options In Learning Management Systems Software. Approaches To Research: Recognising What People Can Do That Computers Can’T, Kathryn Moyle Jun 2001

Options In Learning Management Systems Software. Approaches To Research: Recognising What People Can Do That Computers Can’T, Kathryn Moyle

Professor Kathryn Moyle (consultant)

Research is a fundamental part of education. Researching online learning environments is informing the work of schools and school education jurisdictions. It is argued here that using approaches to research that recognise the place people hold in school education and technology research helps inform the methods of the research conducted. Technological determinism has tended to imbue the language of school education technology policies. This has seen the power and control humans can exercise over approaches to school education research and policy-making, removed. As there has been considerable work already conducted on the technical aspects of learning management systems software, this …

Succeed-Sponsored Freshman Year Engineering Curriculum Improvements At Nc State: A Longitudinal Study Of Retention, Matthew W. Ohland, Sarah A. Rajala, Timothy J. Anderson Jun 2001

Succeed-Sponsored Freshman Year Engineering Curriculum Improvements At Nc State: A Longitudinal Study Of Retention, Matthew W. Ohland, Sarah A. Rajala, Timothy J. Anderson

Sarah A. Rajala

NC State’s involvement in the NSF-sponsored SUCCEED Coalition has led to a number of changes to the freshman year of the engineering curriculum as reported previously (e.g., ASEE 1999, Porter, et al.). An explicit objective of these changes was to retain in engineering those students who were qualified and interested in engineering, but were leaving engineering for other reasons. While a number of isolated innovations have been studied and have demonstrated positive benefit, this study looks at each freshman cohort from 1987 through 1998 to evaluate changes in retention in engineering during that period. Eleven cohorts were studied; five (1987- …

Ec2000 Criterion 2: A Procedure For Creating, Assessing, And Documenting Program Educational Objectives, Michael Carter, Sarah A. Rajala, Rebecca Brent Jun 2001

Ec2000 Criterion 2: A Procedure For Creating, Assessing, And Documenting Program Educational Objectives, Michael Carter, Sarah A. Rajala, Rebecca Brent

Sarah A. Rajala

Criterion 2 [Program Educational Objectives (PEO)] is arguably the most important part of ABET EC2000. PEO embody the broad vision for an engineering program that drives the overall accreditation process. They also provide a crucial nexus point for the assessment of each program, the point at which the programmatic issues of the other EC2000 criteria—curriculum, faculty, facilities, etc.—are considered within the larger context of the needs of key constituencies of the program and the mission of the institution. Criterion 2 plays an essential role in EC2000's goal of encouraging continuous improvement in engineering programs and of providing the opportunity for …

Froebel's Legacy, Kathleen A. Strub-Richards Apr 2001

Froebel's Legacy, Kathleen A. Strub-Richards

Kathleen A Strub-Richards

When Froebel was growing up in the late eighteenth century, young children under the age of seven didn't attend school. There was no general education curriculum geared toward young children and no socially recognized value in attempting to teach them (Brosterman, 1997). Friedrich Froebel, through his experience with young children, was the first to see that “constructive, directed” play was extremely beneficial for children under the age of seven. Froebel was greatly influenced by the Swiss educator, Pestalozzi, and Girard, whose ideas, including the training of teachers, methods of observation and hands before books learning , were very revolutionary for …

Unite For Success: Creating Business And Community College Partnerships For Economic Development, Linda Serra Hagedorn Mar 2001

Unite For Success: Creating Business And Community College Partnerships For Economic Development, Linda Serra Hagedorn

Linda Serra Hagedorn

While community colleges have historically been a source of training for many people, the latest trend is a drift from their vocational focus to one of a more scholarly focus: transfer to four-year institutions. At the same time, business and industry are demanding more highly-trained workers as many employment opportunities remain open due to a lack of appropriately trained individuals. This white paper posits a confluence of the missions and needs of community colleges and local businesses and describes scenarios where long-term united efforts will assist local residents to engage the jobs and opportunities in Los Angeles and to strengthen …

Reducing Resistance To Diversity Through Cognitive Dissonance Instruction: Implications For Teacher Education, Elisabeth L. Mcfalls, Deirdre Cobb-Roberts Mar 2001

Reducing Resistance To Diversity Through Cognitive Dissonance Instruction: Implications For Teacher Education, Elisabeth L. Mcfalls, Deirdre Cobb-Roberts

Deirdre Cobb-Roberts

Before admission to the college of education, students at a large, predominantly White public university in the Southeast are required to complete a state-mandated course on diversity issues. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to diversity and effective ways of addressing it in future classrooms as a result of changing demographics. Often, students experience resistance to diversity issues because their current understandings or beliefs may not coincide with the information presented in class. One psychological theory that can address this phenomenon is called cognitive dissonance. In the study reported here, the principles of cognitive dissonance theory are …

Alternative Discourses In Southeast Asia, Syed Farid Alatas Jan 2001

Alternative Discourses In Southeast Asia, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

This article brings into focus the question of alternative discourses in the social sciences. Alternative discourses are works that attempt to debunk ideas that have become entrenched in the social sciences, partly as a result of colonialism and the continuing Eurocentrism in the social sciences. In the context of Southeast Asia as well as much of the non-Western world, alternative discourses in the social sciences could also be referred to collectively as counter- Eurocentric social science. This paper discusses the emergence of alternative discourses in Southeast Asia, the defintion of alternative discourse, and the future of these discourses in our …

Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz Jan 2001

Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Is the family subject to principles of justice? In A Theory of Justice, John Rawls includes the (monogamous) family along with the market and the government as among the "basic institutions of society" to which principles of justice apply. Justice, he famously insists, is primary in politics as truth is in science: the only excuse for tolerating injustice is that no lesser injustice is possible. The point of the present paper is that Rawls doesn't actually mean this. When it comes to the family, and in particular its impact on fair equal opportunity (the first part of the the Difference …

Bringing Political Theory To University Governance: The University Of California And The Universidad Nacional Autónoma De México, Brian Pusser, Imanol Ordorika

Imanol Ordorika

While important normative work has been produced on various aspects of governance, including trusteeship (Cheit, Holland and Taylor, 1991; Kerr and Gade, 1989), institutional autonomy (Berdahl, 1990), and governance struc- tures (Richardson ct al., 1998) little theoretical inquiry has been devoted to two essential questions of governance: how arc key decisions actually made in the postsecondary sector, and who makes them? In order to advance our unuer- stanuing of higher education governance and policy-making, it is first essential to restore a political theoretical framework to the study of higher cuucation organizations. To that end we begin with an historical review …

Multilateral Agencies And Higher Education Reform In Latin America, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez, Armando Alcántara Jan 2001

Multilateral Agencies And Higher Education Reform In Latin America, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez, Armando Alcántara

Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

During the last decade, the debate over higher education took up a significant space on the agendas of various international agencies, including multilateral development banks and other intergovernmental agencies. This fact points to the importance of the subject within a broader discussion that refers to national development projects and their articulation within the new international economic and political order. In this context, the purpose of this article is to discern the principal lines of argument at work and their implications for the transformation of higher education in Latin America. To this end, we have chosen four cases that we consider …

Is There A Text In This Class? Adolescents And Literary Theory, Joanne M. Marshall Jan 2001

Is There A Text In This Class? Adolescents And Literary Theory, Joanne M. Marshall

Joanne M. Marshall

Browsing the NCTE bookstalls at the convention last year, I spied a new book by Deborah Appleman, Critical Encounters in High School English: Teaching Literacy Criticism to Adolescents (New York: Teachers College Press, 2000). Ha, I thought, right. Adolescents and phallologocentrism. Or semiotics. They'd love that. I remembered once mentioning literary criticism to a class of "average" juniors. Kyle, folded into his desk, looked at me with complete incredulity: "You mean people write books about other people's books?!" Yes, I assured him. He still looked disbelieving.

Virtual Classroom For Teaching The Economics Of Engineering Design, Janis P. Terpenny, Kimberly Sward Jan 2001

Virtual Classroom For Teaching The Economics Of Engineering Design, Janis P. Terpenny, Kimberly Sward

Janis P. Terpenny

As decision-makers, engineers must be knowledgeable and competent in multiple aspects of design. Engineering is more than a problem solving activity focusing on simply the expected performance of designed artifacts. Consideration must also be given to the economic consequences of design decisions on life-cycle issues. A major challenge to undergraduate engineering education is to increase student competency in the economic elements that are such a critical part of the engineering process. Many believe that success in this endeavor requires new methods and materials that actively engage students in learning, are more closely aligned with engineering decision-making, and include real-world problems …
