Strategic Planning In Academe, Frank Cortez Flores Mar 1991

Strategic Planning In Academe, Frank Cortez Flores

Frank Cortez Flores

American higher education has been in a state of transition and upheaval since the founding of Harvard College in 1636, which is generally credited with the beginning of higher education in America. However, in an era of rapidly accelerating change, higher educational institutions today are confronted with a crisis of purpose, erosion of traditional values, declining public support, increasing competition for scarce resources, demands for accountability and a struggle for survival. At no time in the history of American higher education has it been more important for decision makers in colleges and universities to understand the dynamics of strategic planning …

The Deanship: A Dimension Of Academic Leadership, Frank Cortez Flores Mar 1991

The Deanship: A Dimension Of Academic Leadership, Frank Cortez Flores

Frank Cortez Flores

The description in the literature of effective academic leaders is that these leaders are trustworthy, have a clear vision of their school's future, and are able to inspire a shared vision among divergent individuals and groups (Bennis and Norris, 1985). According to Dibden (1968), academic deans are concerned with the effective functioning of an educational unit, promoting scholarship among faculty, facilitating the development of academic programs that expand the intellect of students, and managing the academic budget. A prime assumption of this brief study is, arguably, as the chief administrative officer in an academic program, the dean is essential to …

Fund Raising In American Higher Education, Frank Cortez Flores

Frank Cortez Flores

Philanthropic support of American higher education has a long tradition and the largest portion of that philanthropy has historically been directed to private institutions. However, both public and private higher educational institutions are confronted with serious questions concerning their financial stability. These institutions are considering alternative sources of funds. Therefore, it is important to investigate and analyze methods of increasing philanthropy to American higher education.

The Use Of Extended Follow-Along Procedures In A Supported Employment Setting, Paul Renzaglia, John J. Wheeler, Harold B. Hanson, Sidney R. Miller Feb 1991

The Use Of Extended Follow-Along Procedures In A Supported Employment Setting, Paul Renzaglia, John J. Wheeler, Harold B. Hanson, Sidney R. Miller

John J. Wheeler

This study is a follow-up to a study which previously appeared in Education and Training in Mental Retardation conducted by Wheeler, Bates, Marshall, and Miller (1988). The Wheeler et al., (1988) study examined the use of a self-monitoring procedure to remediate the social skills behaviors of a young man with Down syndrome (i.e., Phil) in a supported competitive employment setting. The present study, which was conducted six-months later demonstrates the efficacy of the follow-along component of the supported employment model and also demonstrates the use of a criterion-referenced assessment and treatment package to re-train technical job skills.

Karl M Lorenz

Engaging The Spectrum: Civic Virtue And The Protection Of Student Voice In School-Sponsored Forums, Robert R.M. Verchick Jan 1991

Engaging The Spectrum: Civic Virtue And The Protection Of Student Voice In School-Sponsored Forums, Robert R.M. Verchick

Robert R.M. Verchick

This article suggests a new justification for protecting student speech that specifically addresses the need for free expression and inquiry in school- sponsored forums. Starting with the proposition that student speech prepares one for self-government, I suggest we re-define the kind of self-government to which we ask students to aspire. By recasting our conception of democracy in a way that highlights universal participation and group transformation, we will find a theory of government much closer to the values of group discovery and social reform.

The Role Of The Global Coalition For Africa In Human Resource Development And Capacity Building, David R. Evans

David R. Evans

This report analyses the education component of the Human Resource Development sector in order to recommend specific activities which take advantage of the capabilities of the Global Coalition for Africa (GCA). The paper looks at four sector-wide options and two sub-sector options, chosen because of the potential benefits from GCA involvement in them. The four sector-wide options are: 1) Increasing government support for Human Resource Development. 2) Diversifying the Supply of Educational Services. 3) Formulation of National Education Policy, and 4) Rationalization of High-Level Meetings. Of the four the best option for GCA is the first, which enables GCA to …
