Defining Hazing: Gender Differences, Daniela Véliz-Calderón Ph.D., Elizabeth J. Allan Ph.D.

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

This paper provides an analysis of a sub-set of data gathered by Allan and Madden (2008) in the National Study of Student Hazing that included 11,482 survey responses from undergraduate students enrolled at 53 colleges and universities and more than 300 interviews with students and campus personnel at 18 of those institutions. Findings from an analysis of the student interview data to explore how students define hazing and the extent to which their definitions may be gendered. Binary constructions of harm, building friendship, and compulsion/opting are key themes described; implications and recommendations for practice and future research are also discussed.

Risky Recruitment: How Rape Myth Acceptance Among Potential New Sorority Members Is Related To Their Self-Efficacy To Prevent Sexual Assault And Perceptions Of University Sexual Assault Reporting, Rebecca R. Ortiz Ph.D., Bailey Thompson Ph.D. Nov 2017

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

This study examined how rape myth acceptance among potential new sorority members is related to their self-efficacy to prevent sexual assault and perceptions of how their university would handle a sexual assault report. Results indicate that the more these women reported acceptance with common rape myths, the less efficacious they felt to prevent sexual assault and the less likely they were to believe the university would handle a sexual assault report adequately. Universities must therefore consider how to dispel dangerous rape myths among this unique population to ensure sorority women feel comfortable intervening in and reporting sexual assault incidents.

The Conceptualization Of Sisterhood Within The Collegiate Sorority: An Exploration, Joshua Shutts Ph.D., Gentry Mccreary Ph.D., Sarah Cohen M.Ed. Nov 2017

The Conceptualization Of Sisterhood Within The Collegiate Sorority: An Exploration, Joshua Shutts Ph.D., Gentry Mccreary Ph.D., Sarah Cohen M.Ed.

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

This article expands the work of Cohen, McCreary and Schutts (2017) by devising, testing and validating a scale that measures five distinct schema of sisterhood. The scale development process resulted in a 24-item measure made up of five correlated dimensions: shared social experiences, belonging, support and encouragement, accountability, and common purpose. The five-factor model was stable across multiple samples. The construct validity of the sisterhood scale, including convergent and discriminant validity was also demonstrated.

Intersectional Value? A Pilot Study Exploring Educational Outcomes For African American Women In Historically Black Sororities Versus Non-Historically Black Sororities, Donald Mitchell J.R., John Gipson, Jakia Marie, Tiffany Steele

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

The purpose of this pilot study was to initially explore if there is value added in terms of educational outcomes for Black women involved in historically Black sororities by comparing them to Black women involved in non-historically Black sororities, given the racial-gender support historically Black sororities offer. Main findings suggest Black women involved in historically Black sororities were more socially involved than Black women involved in non-historically Black sororities. The article closes with implications for practice and future research.

Social Integration Of Sorority Women Living In Residence Halls, Roger Wessel Ph.D., Molly Salisbury M.A Jun 2017

Social Integration Of Sorority Women Living In Residence Halls, Roger Wessel Ph.D., Molly Salisbury M.A

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

College students find a sense of belonging at institutions in multiple ways. For college women, the relationships they form through their campus involvements are important. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the social integration experiences of sorority women living in residence halls. The researchers found sorority women had positive community experiences and enriched relationship opportunities through their involvement in sororities and residence halls. The women felt more connected to people through the relationships they formed because of sorority membership, whereas they felt more connected to campus as a whole because they lived in the halls.

The Conceptualization Of Sisterhood Within The Collegiate Sorority: An Exploration, Sarah Cohen M.Ed., Gentry Mccreary Ph.D., Joshua Shutts Ph.D.

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

The term “sisterhood” is one that has been used in a variety of ways to describe relationships among and between groups of women. Scholars have devoted little to no attention to the manner in which modern sorority members define and conceptualize their sisterhood experience. This study seeks to understand the various ways that collegiate sorority members define and experience the concept of sisterhood. The present study closely mirrors and extends the methodology and focus of the research on brotherhood conducted by McCreary and Schutts (2015).

Living Memory: What It Portends When The Founders Still Live, Ari Stillman Jun 2017

Living Memory: What It Portends When The Founders Still Live, Ari Stillman

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

What informs an organization’s identity? Older organizations have annals that record the history for posterity, but what of newer organizations? Their history has yet to be made and much of it is as open to negotiation as their future unfolds. To explore this contingency, I delve into one organization, a young fraternity, during an occasion in which memories are exchanged and organizational identity is expanded. What I discovered elucidates the power of living memory and the fecundity of an occasion such as a national convention for keeping it alive.

Sorority Women, Drinking, And Context: The Influence Of Environment On College Student Drinking, Jill Russett Ph.D.

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

The purpose of this study was to explore college drinking from the perspective of sorority women, including delving further into situational or contextual conditions related to the environment where drinking occurs, and examining the extent to which gender influences associated behaviors and choices related to drinking. Data collection occurred through three focus groups; in all 25 undergraduate sorority women participated. In addition, six focus group participants volunteered to take part in individual follow up interviews. Findings illustrate the prevalence and influence of a male dominated drinking environment, specifically identified within fraternities, and highlight sorority women’s awareness of gender differences and …
