Are Chinese Students Really Quiet, Passive And Surface Learners? – A Cultural Studies Perspective, Jinyan Huang, Peter Alexander Cowden Dec 2009

Are Chinese Students Really Quiet, Passive And Surface Learners? – A Cultural Studies Perspective, Jinyan Huang, Peter Alexander Cowden

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Research has indicated that Chinese students experience considerable challenges in their academic studies at North American universities. This paper explores Chinese students’ academic learning through cultural studies perspectives by examining the concept of identity; cultural and linguistic context; Chinese students as quiet and passive learners; different classroom teaching methods experienced in both cultures; surface learners vs. deep learners; different culture worlds; and the concept of social communicative competence. It is argued that quiet, passive and surface learners are perhaps incorrect descriptors of Chinese students who are studying at North American Universities. Important educational implications are discussed.

Presidential Address - Education And Social Development: Global Perspectives, Ali A. Abdi Dec 2009

Presidential Address - Education And Social Development: Global Perspectives, Ali A. Abdi

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

It is generally assumed that education leads to the well-being of societies and individuals, with the type of education intended here, usually representing the general formal systems of schooling that have been globalized throughout the world in the past 120 or so years. Clearly, such education, which replaced informal forms of schooling via the expansion of European colonialism, is not achieving social development for all. In this paper, it is contended that such platforms of learning are historically, culturally and linguistically decontextualizing, in especially current postcolonial countries, and as such, are not fully conducive to social development. It is therefore, …

Culturally Responsive Communicative Teaching (Crclt): A New Alternative For Efl Teachers In China And Other Non-English Speaking Countries, Yi Lin

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This paper proposes Culturally Responsive Communicative Teaching (CRCLT) as an innovative, alternative approach to meeting the specific cultural contexts and individual students’ needs in non-English-speaking countries. The paper not only contains a comprehensive theoretical framework of the proposed approach, but also offers practical recommendations based on the author’s reading of the literature and professional experience as an EFL teacher in China. The author believes such a study will contribute to EFL teachers’ knowledge of a promising approach which can be adapted to specific cultural contexts and encourage more exploration for new alternatives in teaching EFL in non-English-speaking countries.

Pour Une Conceptualisation De La Compétence Multiculturelle De L’Enseignant, Mirela Moldoveanu

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Aboriginal Students And The Delivery Of Citizenship Education, Frank Deer

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Aboriginal people, one of Canada’s most significant ethnic groups in regard to population and growth, are in crisis. This crisis can be characterized as one of social positioning where conditions of poverty, lack of opportunity, and other elements of marginalization are symptoms. Aboriginals and non-Aboriginal scholars have engaged in numerous discussions regarding what can be described as a struggle for a state of dignity in Canada. Citizenship education, an aspect of contemporary schooling that embraces such notions as equality, tolerance, and social justice, is reputed to provide some direction in regard to how all Canadians can develop and prosper regardless …

Corruption And Reform In Higher Education In Ukraine, Ararat L. Osipian

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

At least thirty percent of Ukrainians enter colleges by paying bribes while many others use their connections with the faculty and administration. Corruption increases inequalities in access to higher education, prevents future economic growth in the country, and undermines quality and credentials of academic degrees. This paper considers corruption in higher education in Ukraine, including such aspects as corruption in admissions to higher education institutions and corruption in administering the newly introduced standardized test. The reform of higher education in Ukraine, based on the national examinations, is intended to be a response to the rapidly changing economic environment and the …

Cost-Sharing In Higher Education In Tanzania: The Experiences Of The 1990s And One Decade Later, Grace Khwaya Puja

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This article discusses the cost- sharing experiences of 73 Tanzanian female undergraduates who took part in a 1997 study. It also integrated views and suggestions of the 2007 students from the University of Dar es Salaam and Sokoine University of Agriculture, Mazimbu campus. The University of Dar es Salaam was closed in 2007 because First Year students boycotted classes to protest the government’s policy that required them to pay 40% for their higher education. I advocate for partnership in student financing and the introduction of graduate tax for recovering higher education students’ loans.

Japanese Aesthetics And English Education In The Global Age, Kazuko Kurihara Jun 2009

Japanese Aesthetics And English Education In The Global Age, Kazuko Kurihara

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

With the advent of the global information age, Japanese youth today are required to have authentic abilities to communicate with different peoples from different countries in the English language, rather than simply a good knowledge of practical and functional American English. Affective learners of English are created through aesthetic reading, especially English poetry, when moved or inspired by the authenticity of the content implying the profound but subtle meaning of human emotion in life. In this sense, the way of affective and aesthetic English learning follows the traditional Japanese appreciation of ephemeral beauty. As an authentic incentive to intellectual activities, …

Mesure Et Analyse De L’Efficacité Des Etablissements De La Formation Professionnelle En Tunisie, Ezzeddine Mosbah, Mohamed S. Bachta

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

The focus of this paper is on a qualitative case study involving twenty educators.

The Global Text Project, Richard T. Watson, Donald J. Mccubbrey Feb 2009

The Global Text Project, Richard T. Watson, Donald J. Mccubbrey

The African Journal of Information Systems

The Global Text Project is intended to create global free textbooks for students in the developing countries. We argue that two key technological and social developments offer an opportunity to create a new model for textbook publishing. First, the Internet is a low cost channel for distributing information products in digital form. Second, global digital communities have created the platform for collaborative creation of content. Through this model a free and open content library will be developed for students covering all major subjects for an undergraduate education. This project is a contributory measure to the global efforts to address the …

Education For All Children, Sharon Harrall Jan 2009

Education For All Children, Sharon Harrall

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The UN Declaration of Human Rights, ratified in 1948, declared for the first time the right to education as a human right. Article 26 (1) states that “everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory.” Since then, the right to education has been reaffirmed in subsequent treaties and global conferences. These treaties have also highlighted the need to provide education to all children without discrimination, and particularly to ensure equal access for girls. Historically, we have seen great gender disparities in the enrollment rates of …
