Simulating Function Generators And Oscilloscopes In A Virtual Laboratory Environment, Yiyang Li, Yuzhong Shen, Charles I. Sukenik
Simulating Function Generators And Oscilloscopes In A Virtual Laboratory Environment, Yiyang Li, Yuzhong Shen, Charles I. Sukenik
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
This paper discusses the development of a virtual laboratory for simulating electronic instruments commonly used in science and engineering courses, such as function generators and digital storage oscilloscopes. Mathematical equations are used to represent continuous signals and ensure signal integrity, while C# delegates are adopted to enable communication between simulated devices. The approach allows for loose coupling between software components and high cohesion of individual components, and can be applied to other virtual laboratory developments. The virtual laboratory provides a means for students to gain hands-on experience with electronic instruments and improve their understanding of theoretical concepts.

Studying Abroad In College: Investigating How A Living-Learning Community (Llc) Impacts Students, Stella Erbes, Rebecca Jackson, Eunice Sim
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
The purpose of this mixed-method study was to identify which elements of a living-learning community (LLC) based in one of Pacific University’s (pseudonym) signature study abroad programs influenced students’ intellectual, personal, social, and spiritual growth. Thus far, 108 undergraduates completed an online survey composed of 32 questions that addressed five sections: 1) Consent, 2) Demographics, 3) Input, 4) Environment, 5) Learning Outcomes. Preliminary results found that personal travel, the educational field trip, and the program staff were the most influential factors in student development. Conclusively, 99.1% of participants reported intellectual, personal, and professional growth, while 76.1% reported spiritual growth.

What Is Active Learning? Perspectives From Five Stem Professors' Teaching Practices In Their Classrooms, Iliana Correa
What Is Active Learning? Perspectives From Five Stem Professors' Teaching Practices In Their Classrooms, Iliana Correa
Capstone Showcase
This senior thesis investigated what ways, if any, STEM professors incorporated active learning pedagogy in their undergraduate classroom in a small private university in the northeast USA. STEM pedagogy was investigated because of the increasing prominence of active learning methods in the classroom compared to the didactic type of teaching that was prominent in the past (Eichler, 2020). A qualitative case study of five STEM professors was conducted and involved collecting data from biographical questions, a one-hour interview, and the analysis of a document provided by the professor that could have been a lesson plan, an assignment, or an activity …

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on education and training. Institutions that relied heavily on face-to-face instruction suddenly needed alternative modalities to keep students on course, forcing educators and trainers to employ a variety of educational techniques via technologies that they may not have had experience with. This shift has brought the advantages – and disadvantages – of augmented, mixed, and virtual reality technologies (collectively, extended reality or XR) for education and training into sharp focus. Programs were quickly assembled, and not always with consideration of learning theories. As learning and training were resumed in in-person settings, academics and …

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Given the growing recognition of the role of teachers as agents in 21st century learning environments, this proposed study builds on our work on ‘Teacher Design Knowledge’ (TDK) as critical capabilities for teachers in designing and implementing innovative curriculum, pedagogy, and technology through researcher-practitioner collaboration (SSHRC Insight Grant 2017-2024, Kim, M. S., PI). As one of TDK competencies, teacher data literacies (TDL), the ability to derive meaningful information from multimodal data (e.g., drawings, 3D modeling, gaze, gestures, emotions) in student learning, is a relatively new concept for teachers in contexts of cultural and linguistic diversity. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has …
Trends In Review Of Educational Research Systematic Reviews And Implications For Supporting Graduate Students, Ashlynn Kogut
Trends In Review Of Educational Research Systematic Reviews And Implications For Supporting Graduate Students, Ashlynn Kogut
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Graduate students in education at my university conduct systematic reviews (SRs) as part of their dissertations as well as for publications. During the initial consultation with a graduate student, I often review the steps of a SR and suggest resources about the SR methodology. Yet, students seem to prefer to utilize journals articles as a guide, even though these example articles might not report all the SR steps. For example, limiting a search to peer reviewed journals is frequently used as a quality indicator, despite critical appraisal or quality assessment of the included articles being one of the key steps …

Utilizing "Third Space" To Support Students With Refugee Backgrounds, Susie Redecop
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This infographic provides a snapshot of my research on third space theory and provides examples of how it can be used in the classroom to support students with refugee backgrounds. If home is a child’s first space and school is a second space, a third space is an environment where these two spheres merge. Third spaces interrupt cultural essentialism and create new opportunities for understanding, collaboration and harmony (Lotherington, 2013). Teachers can use third space theory to combine culture and curriculum to make learning meaningful and accessible for all learners.

Empathy Mapping: Bridging Cultural And Linguistic Divides In International Online Education, Juliet Lammers
Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse International Students in Open or Online Learning Environments: A Research Symposium
The concept of empathy, commonly used in user experience (UX) design, has gained traction in distance education communities (Matthews et al., 2017). Empathy offers designers insight into users and their contexts (Neubauer et al., 2017) and helps designers “understand how instruction would be experienced” (Parrish, 2006), thus improving the overall outcome (Lewis & Contrino, 2016; Neubauer et al., 2017; Parrish, 2006). UX designers use a visualization tool called empathy mapping to chart information about their users. Empathy maps are used at the outset of a project and continue to evolve and inform the project as new data emerges. This paper …

Quality of education in Pakistan usually depends on how high the school is charging. However, when private schools charge higher, they also provide the facilities which are shown in the former doughnut chart. Unlike private schools, public or lowend private schools only charge for minimal tuition fee, either awarded from the government or collected from the pupils.
The Importance Of Digital Skills In Education In The Covid-19 Era, Alma V. Lama
The Importance Of Digital Skills In Education In The Covid-19 Era, Alma V. Lama
UBT International Conference
Education is a fundamental right and we have to make sure we hold on to it despite any crisis and beyond. Just like in all the world, Kosovo has been affected by the pandemic COVID -19 in March 2020. The pandemic situation has changed how things function and it looks like this is going to be a new normal. As a result of it, all industries including the educational institutions, those private and public, had to reimagine how to switch into online performance and computer-based learning. Online learning has served as a lever to continue with education in an online …
Developing Critical Thinking With Rhetorical Pedagogy, Elizabeth Ismail
Developing Critical Thinking With Rhetorical Pedagogy, Elizabeth Ismail
OSSA Conference Archive
The development of critical thinking skills is emphasized as a fundamental attribute of successful graduates (Ritchhart & Perkins, 2005; Willingham, 2008). Some critical thinking textbooks inform students to “see beyond the rhetoric to the core idea being stated” (Moore and Parker, 2009, p. 21); however, other scholars have begun to suggest that rhetoric is intrinsically interrelated to critical thinking and plays a pivotal role in everyday interactions (Saki, 2016). This paper explores the later.

Reclaiming Impact In The Age Of Awareness-Raising For Human Rights, Azadeh Pourzand, Ali Arab
Reclaiming Impact In The Age Of Awareness-Raising For Human Rights, Azadeh Pourzand, Ali Arab
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
In the last decade, the practice of awareness-raising for human rights has appeared as notably common across the board. Nevertheless, widespread awareness-raising has not necessarily always resulted in meaningful and sustainable impact. Accepting that awareness raising is not a panacea, we challenge the global collective fascination with big impact, while considering the power of small strategic impact that invests in education, and building alliances, and has the potential to last and to expand by way of gradual encroachment through contextually-defined grassroots means natural to its course.
Empowered through social media, advocates are increasingly enthusiastic about reaching massive audiences by way …
Addressing Mass Atrocity In Chile: Learning And Unlearning As A Function Of Social Memory, Irving Epstein
Addressing Mass Atrocity In Chile: Learning And Unlearning As A Function Of Social Memory, Irving Epstein
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
In this presentation, I reference a chapter, that is taken from my newly published book, Affect Theory and Comparative Education Discourse: Essays on Fear and Loathing in Response to Global Educational Policy and Practice (Bloomsbury Academic, 2019). I argue that when schools fail to address issues of social memory or basic existential questions involved in the pursuit of meaning-making for the purposes of understanding human rights issues, popular support evolves for other institutions to fill the void. Through examining the case of Chile, efforts to memorialize victims of the Pinochet dictatorship occur in the absence of robust initiatives to address …
Firing Queer Teachers From Catholic Schools: Ethical And Theological Considerations, Ish Ruiz
Firing Queer Teachers From Catholic Schools: Ethical And Theological Considerations, Ish Ruiz
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Since 2007, there have been over 90 cases of queer employees fired from Catholic institutions – many of which include dismissals of queer educators from Catholic schools. As religious institutions, Catholic schools are constitutionally protected by a ministerial exception that offers legal immunity to Catholic educational institutions that fire queer employees (which are sometimes considered “ministers” by the courts). The ministerial exception is an extension of the institution’s right to religious freedom to promote its doctrine though its schools. Although this right to discriminate is legally protected, from a moral standpoint, one may argue that the exercise of one human …

Using Gps And Gis To Engage Students In High-Impact Educational Practices (Hiep); A Case Study In Bahia Ballena, Costa Rica, Austin Riegel
Student Symposium
One issue that many teachers face today is teaching students that are not English heritable speakers. In the past couple decades there has been a sharp increase in the amount of non-native English speakers in the classroom; making it important for new teachers to be able to relay information to the students when they don’t speak the same language. Over Spring Break (2019), I visited Costa Rica to work with a 6th grader class that spoke mainly Spanish -- I don’t have formal training in Spanish. We employed various high-impact educational practices and hands-on activities (e.g., drone flying, mapping with …

Examining Student Engagement In The Learning Process, Marigona Sefedini
Examining Student Engagement In The Learning Process, Marigona Sefedini
UBT International Conference
Becoming skilled readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers requires ample opportunity for practice, authentic reasons for communicating, and effective instructional support (Marzano, 1992). To achieve competence in literacy, students must be motivated to engage with literacy tasks and to improve their proficiency as readers and writers. Instruction and practice then provide the coaching and feedback necessary to gain competence. Increased competence inspires continued motivation to engage (Irvin, 2007). This paper researches three levels on student engagement and how those levels can be enhanced. It first discovers behavioral engagement from students to reveal if behaviors have an influence in the learning …

Quality As A Subject Of Study In The Field Of Management And Education, Gkarnara Rodoula-Stavroula
UBT International Conference
This article attempts to discuss the term of quality both in Management and Education field in order to present the similarities and the differences of the term. The concept of quality was introduced in the 1950s and 1960s, when the Japanese faced serious problems with the export and sale of their products. Then, many scientists have dealt with this concept, which has begun to grow in the field of Management and Business. The delimitation of quality has proven to be a complex process, which even today is a controversial issue because of the subjective nature that is given to it. …

A Green Peel On Steam Education: An Innovative And Sustainable Education Scheme Integrating Steam And Environmental Education, Chi Hou Chan, Ying Ting Si Tu
The International Student Science Fair 2018
The STEAM education in China started late so it is still in its infancy. Its curriculum is partial to IT and Internet, which is against the original purpose of interdisciplinary education in STEAM. Meanwhile, the resources put on environmental education are minute so the environmental awareness of citizens is very weak. Therefore, we have proposed an innovative education scheme—integrating STEAM, environmental and family education together so that they can complement each other. Such a scheme not only makes STEAM education more comprehensive, it can also make environmental education more effective. To implement our scheme, we have made use of peel …
