GSTC Academic Symposium - In conjunction with the GSTC Global Conference Sweden April 23, 2024

Major challenges have altered the status quo of tourism in Europe in the last years: COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, geopolitical instability, the energy crisis, and widespread inflation. Concurrently, significant societal changes in work-life, movement, and recreational patterns are also affecting tourism dynamics and trends. The current tourism landscape is thus profoundly different than it was until 2019, and it is in strong need of finding new solutions and pathways to radically innovate while keeping local communities and the environment at the core of its strategies. Connecting The Dots Between Science, Technology, Engineering And Math Education And Aviation Professional Shortages, Owen D. Bruce

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

The 2018 Boeing Pilot and Technician Outlook report forecasted that the aviation industry needs 790,000 new civil aviation pilots worldwide over the next 20 years. Some airlines have answered the call by creating ab initio (entry-level) programs to recruit, train, and hire their own pilots. However, the 2018 Outlook report also forecasted that the aviation industry needs 754,000 maintenance technicians over the next 20 years. Recently, there has been more attention paid to potential shortages in other aviation careers such as aircraft maintenance technicians but the primary focus is still remains on the pilot population.

One of the factors that …

An Examination Of Recent Female Graduates From A Collegiate Aviation Program And Their Decisions To Become Professional Pilots, Debra Henneberry Ed.D., Maxine Lubner Ph.D., Pete Russo Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Despite evidence of males and females having generally comparable abilities as pilots, very few women choose this career path. According to the Federal Aviation Administration database of aviators, approximately 7% of the total pilot population in the United States is female, and 5% of professional pilot ratings are held by women. These statistics have been relatively consistent for several decades.

The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of why females decide to become professional pilots. This is a continuation of the study investigated in Henneberry (2018). Findings and recommendations in that research included increasing the number …

Cybersecurity Education Employing Experiential Learning, Travis Lowe, Casey Rackley

KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to discuss a curriculum design that employs Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory stages and Kolb’s Learning Styles in four consecutive class sessions. The challenge each class is to present students with perplexing and often frustrating network problems that someday might be encountered on the job. By using Kolb’s theory, students address those problems from the perspective of each learning style, while passing through each phase of the learning cycle. As a result, students gain stronger cognitive thinking skills and hands-on troubleshooting skills in preparation for work as network administrators or cybersecurity analysts.

Writing, Developing, And Publishing Your Aviation Book, Suzanne K. Kearns Ph.D. Aug 2018

Writing, Developing, And Publishing Your Aviation Book, Suzanne K. Kearns Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

As the aviation industry faces a projected shortage of aviation professionals internationally, it is increasingly important to guide and support the next generation on their path towards competence. Part of this support will require skilled teachers and researchers to contribute to aviation education through the publication of their knowledge and expertise within books.

A challenge is that, through their educational journey, most aviation academics are taught the process of writing and publishing their research within academic journals. Very little direct guidance on the process, types, and publication venues of books is available.

The purpose of this presentation is to outline …

The model encourages community-based career awareness and exploration in elementary grades with more advanced preparation and training in high school. A continuum of structure for accessing work-based learning experiences at the high school provides a culminating learning …

Focus Highlight In Vpet: Education To Work Transition And Transferable Skills, Jisun Chung

VPET International Conference

Korea's government-lead vocational education has fostered the industrial manpower necessary for economic development. As part of the process of economic development, Korea has become a highly educated society. However, due to the quantitative and qualitative mismatch between labour supply and demand, there has been a shortage of jobs for college graduates and a shortage of high school graduates in the labour market. In 2008, Korea's Ministry of Education began reforming its vocational high school policy. Vocational schools were upgraded to Meister High Schools and Specialized Vocational High Schools in accordance with the philosophy of 'Work first, College later'. To strengthen …

Focus Highlight In Vpet: Curriculum And Pedagogy, Stephen Billett

VPET International Conference

As the nature of occupations and requirements for work are constantly transforming, student needs and aspirations undergo corresponding changes, making it important to consider and potentially reform Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) curriculum, pedagogy and practices. This includes a reconsideration of the aims of VPET provision, the type, importance and range of experiences being afforded students (i.e., curriculum practices) and how these experiences can be enriched to optimise learning (i.e., pedagogic practices). One clear point of departure is that the learning experiences of VPET students cannot be restricted to activities within vocational education institutions or those delivered through …

Focus Highlight In Vpet: Governance And Performance, Peter Noonan

VPET International Conference

This presentation will consider various evolving models for vocational education and training (VET) system governance and their relationship to VET system performance. Governance is defined broadly to include how power is exercised, who exercises the power and governance models relevant to VET, including co-governance with industry, governance in federal systems such as Australia and Germany, and devolved governance (such as the various levels of autonomy of training providers and institutions). The differences in planned versus market-based systems and the intersection between governance in VET and other systems (schools and higher education) will also be considered. System performance will then be …
