A Study Of The Summer Remedial Reading Program Of The Ellinwood Kansas Elementary School, Manly Huber

Master's Theses

Beginning in 1949 a remedial summer school session was held in the Ellinwood Elementary School to help the pupils who had failed to advance with their groups or whose achievement was low. This investigation was designed to study the summer school program for the purpose of justifying its continuance or to show the effort to be of insignificant educational value and , therefore, no more than a keep -them-off-the-street plan . Although the summer school -included only the subjects of reading, arithmetic, and spelling, the study was limited to the remedial reading division of the summer of 1949 during which there were ...

An Annotated Bibliography Of Suggested Free Reading For The Seventh Grade, John Sipe Jul 1951

An Annotated Bibliography Of Suggested Free Reading For The Seventh Grade, John Sipe

Master's Theses

The writer, in an attempt to encourage the free-reading habits of seventh grade students, has felt a definite need for a list of good books of different classes. This list would serve as a ready source for making recommendations to students according to their interests. A great number of bibliographies were available, but none could be found by the writer which would give an overall view of reading interests and still be concise enough for use as a quick reference. It is from this felt need for an easily accessible reference list that the basis for this study arose. Specifically ...

Achievement Of Pupils At Upper Grade Levels In Russell County, Kansas, Lawrence C. Dillon

Master's Theses

The use of tests and measurements has been fascinating to the writer through several years of school experience. How much pupils learn, whether they measure up to other pupils and in what fields of knowledge they excel have been questions to which the answers were always interesting. Therefore, when it became a possibility to use results of a state-wide testing program as thesis material it was at once accepted. The work has been interesting and the findings justify the labor involved, in the opinion of the writer.

The Relationship Of Reading And Spelling Ability At Various School Levels, Robert C. Richards Jul 1948

The Relationship Of Reading And Spelling Ability At Various School Levels, Robert C. Richards

This relationship refers to the linear correlation relationship derived from the use of standardized tests. The particular phases of ...

The Growth Of Elementary And Secondary Education In Russell County, Kansas, Elmer L. Dougherty

Master's Theses

Throughout this work we shall carry one phase of the growth of education as it applies to a restricted geographical area. We must note from the beginning that the available material is very fragmentary even in a country whose existence spans only slightly more than half a century. No attempt was made by school administrators to keep an accurate history of their school systems. Records have been lost or misplaced. As a result, at this date it is impossible to clearly picture every part of the whole educational system within this restricted area , but the evidence which is still available ...

Until rather recent years home study or home work has been an integral part of the school program. Simultaneous with the increase in the complexities of our modern social life, the school curriculum of today has been undergoing a gradual change. Such outstanding social occurrences of modern times as industrialization, urbanization of our people, and newer methods in transportation and communication have been greatly accountable for the transfer of so many of the early responsibilities of the home to the school. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of homework on seventh and eighth grade achievement in ...

Achievement In Spelling In The Elementary School With And Without The Use Of Textbooks In The Hands Of Pupils, Ernest R. Allbert

Master's Theses

The specific problem of this thesis is to determine the relative worth of two methods of instruction in spelling, namely: (1) achievement in spelling when pupils study the spelling lesson then the words are written on the blackboard, and (2) when the spelling words are studied in the orthodoxy way – from the textbook. In so far as the writer has been able to determine there is little in the literature of education concerning experimental investigations of the relative worth of these two methods.
