A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Kathleen J. Sunnes

Graduate Research Papers

As the 21st Century approaches, changes in social, political, and economic environments have been accelerating. There is a change of attitude about the educational system and its role in our society. It is my belief that our school systems will be the stable institutions which will maintain and teach the values our society will need to survive. Education has a powerful influence on our children. The responsibility of the principal of an educational institution is great.

The progress of Black women must clearly be stated in the context of value and images which are our own not in the mirror of the dominant culture's values. As we move to fill new roles, and to create new roles, we must bring with us our own values. The progress of Black women, as Black women, is the measure of how well or how poorly this nation has been able to accommodate the unique perspectives of those once defined as inferior because we are Black, and unstable because we are women (Washington, 1988) .

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Mark T. Core Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Mark T. Core

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper· is to articulate the fundamental values and beliefs which will guide me as I prepare to enter the field of administration. I would like to begin with a general statement on why I am a professional educator, a mission statement if you will. The paper will then examine specific behaviors which I hope to exhibit during my practice as an administrator. Before analyzing my personal motives for entering school administration, I must first ask myself what exactly is the role of education in our society. It seems those of us in the adult world have …

The Influence Of Academic Advising And Retention Programs On Minority Students' Matriculation, Celeste F. Bland Jan 1992

The Influence Of Academic Advising And Retention Programs On Minority Students' Matriculation, Celeste F. Bland

Graduate Research Papers

"Since the founding of Harvard University in 1636, institutions of higher education have been concerned with students leaving college prior to completing degree requirements" (Jackson, 1992, p.14). The complex ways in which people learn and ultimately persist while attending institutions of higher education is not easily understood or formulated. As research indicates, minority students on predominantly white institutions have particular needs which must be met in order to enhance their achievement and persistence on college campuses (Allen, 1992). Many minority students encounter a variety of problems while enrolled at predominantly white institutions; therefore, there is a need for fresh, innovative, …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Leann R. Burkholder Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Leann R. Burkholder

Graduate Research Papers

Education in today's society has transformed almost completely and has changed dramatically. The techniques and curricula have shifted as students have change. The family unit is different now because of socio-economic problems, divorce, and single parent homes. Many values and beliefs taught in the past at home are now taught and learned in the schools. With both parents working in many families, quality time with children diminishes and is sometimes nonexistent. This quality time is where children learn morals, manners, and social interactions. Currently, children come to school without these appropriate social skills and it is up to the school …

A Preferred Vision For Administering School Business Management: A Reflective Essay, Joseph B. Daley

Graduate Research Papers

"School business management is a broad, complex and dynamic area of educational administration. The contemporary school business administrator must be knowledgeable about a wide variety of areas." (Association of School Business Officials International [ASBO INT'L], 1986, p. 7) This same book listed seven high importance task clusters; financial planning and budgeting, fiscal accounting and financial reporting, cash management, fiscal audits and reports, general management, payroll management, and purchasing. The average importance list contained 20 additional items.

Development Of Self-Concept In Elementary School Guidance And Counseling Programs: Counselor As Leader, Jack L. Darland Jr. Jan 1992

Development Of Self-Concept In Elementary School Guidance And Counseling Programs: Counselor As Leader, Jack L. Darland Jr.

Graduate Research Papers

In reviewing the literature of guidance and counseling studies over the past fifteen years, several key ideas emerge. Among these is the popular trend toward "planned sequential, developmentally-based guidance curriculum". A major focus of this developmental concept is the building of "self" as a keystone. The terms "self-esteem", "self-awareness", "self-concept" or ''self-acceptance", are at the heart of most elementary guidance programs. Self-perceptions held by the child have been of mixed concern in education for a long time. In the not-so-distant past it was felt that a child's sense of self needed to be broken down before truly effective learning could-take …

Administrative Leadership Vision: A Reflective Essay, Joleen Eiklenborg

Graduate Research Papers

Education is in a time of great debate, change, and growth. Iowa schools are trying to implement the New Department of Education Standards established in 1989 and new legislation enacted by the Seventy-Third Iowa General Assembly in 1989 and 1990. As we deliberate, another transformation labeled, "The Iowa Initiative for World-Class Schools", is under study (Lantor, 1991; Lepley, 1991)

The Role Of The School Counselor In Assessment And Treatment Of Attentional Problem Students, Carole Eslinger Jan 1992

The Role Of The School Counselor In Assessment And Treatment Of Attentional Problem Students, Carole Eslinger

Graduate Research Papers

Currently, five percent of America's school-aged children are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADHD), using the DSM-R III (American Psychiatric Association, 1980) classification system. Recognizing the increasing incidence of crack/ cocaine babies in the 1990's, our educators will be faced with growing numbers of behaviorally disordered children (Rist, 1990). Ross and Ross (1982) suggested that like most childhood behavior disorders, ADHD is more common in boys than in girls with sex ratios ranging from 6:1 (Friedman & Doyal, 1987). Brancaleone (1988) concluded that there is extreme difficulty in defining and diagnosing ADHD because children have various …

A New Leadership Vision For Secondary School Principals: A Reflective Essay, Dana C. Deines Jan 1992

A New Leadership Vision For Secondary School Principals: A Reflective Essay, Dana C. Deines

Graduate Research Papers

Reflective practice is based on the reality that professional knowledge is different from scientific knowledge, according to Kotter (1988). Researchers have not been able to establish a full understanding of the nature of professional knowledge in education. There are differing views on the terms and conditions of educational practices. The practice of every professional is a growth process not formed from a strict set of rules or research results. Professional practice is developed through trial and error. It has also been expressed as "thinking on your feet." Educators find procedures that seem to work, and others that have failed. The …

Aftercare Following Treatment For Aging Alcoholics, Rebecca S. Despenas Jan 1992

Aftercare Following Treatment For Aging Alcoholics, Rebecca S. Despenas

Graduate Research Papers

Throughout the last fifteen years the realization of a problem with alcoholism in the elderly population has come to the attention of many Americans. Following heart disease and cancer, alcoholism ranks as the third leading cause of death (Benshoff & Roberto, 1987). Approximately one out of ten people over 60 years of age {27.5 million) fall into the category of alcoholics but only 15% of that number actually receive treatment {Kelley, 1991).

Alcoholism And Perceptions Of Family Of Origin, Sonne K. Granquist Jan 1992

Alcoholism And Perceptions Of Family Of Origin, Sonne K. Granquist

Graduate Research Papers

Theories regarding the etiology of alcoholism abound in the literature. Conceptualization of the disease has ranged from that of individual pathology to a symptom of family dysfunction. In the past, treatment providers have concentrated their efforts on treating the individual alcoholic while virtually ignoring issues regarding the adult alcoholic's family of origin as well as problems found in the alcoholic's nuclear family. More recently, theorists and therapists have begun looking at the impact of the family of origin on the development of alcoholism in certain individuals. Greater understanding of the disease has come to include examining not only the individual's …

The Status Of The In Loco Parentis Doctrine In American Higher Education, William Lee Maravetz Jan 1992

The Status Of The In Loco Parentis Doctrine In American Higher Education, William Lee Maravetz

Graduate Research Papers

Though the concept of in loco parentis as applied to higher education lost its legal status during the late 1960s and early 1970s, many higher education authorities believe that the underlying philosophy of in loco parentis is re-emerging. This paper examines the history of the in loco parentis doctrine in American higher education. By drawing on a number of sources, the fluctuating legal and philosophical applications of the doctrine are traced from their origins in colonial America to their status in the higher education system of today.

Art Therapy In Elementary School Counseling, Jennifer S. Handeland Jan 1992

Art Therapy In Elementary School Counseling, Jennifer S. Handeland

Graduate Research Papers

People tend to be less guarded about expressing themselves through drawings than through speech. Therefore, drawings can offer glimpses into the ways individuals see themselves and their worlds (Silver, 1988). Children are attracted to art materials as spontaneously as they play with food on their plates or create monuments in backyard mud. Because making and marking are so very natural and appealing to children, the use of art media is a valuable avenue for expression when counseling the young (Rubin, 1988) . Art therapy can be used in dealing with normal developmental problems and can promote identity building. Through art …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Daniel C. Heller Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Daniel C. Heller

Graduate Research Papers

Twenty some years ago I decided I would become a teacher, I believed I could make a difference. I have mostly been satisfied with my role as an educator. I was, however, dissatisfied with one area. That was the qualities of those that led the schools in which I taught. On several occasions actions taken or plans made were not handled very well. My fellow teachers and I were not sure how or why we were to complete an assigned task. It appeared as though we were asked to implement some change without adequate direction and no clear understanding of …

Student Affairs: In Search Of Ethics, Christine E. Hobbs Jan 1992

Student Affairs: In Search Of Ethics, Christine E. Hobbs

Graduate Research Papers

Recently, ethics has been a topic that higher education administrators have been examining with intense interest. Ethics and moral responsibility are the themes for educational journal articles, book chapters, and conferences. This interest has led many institutions of higher education in search of ethical standards and guidelines for their professional staffs. There are several reasons that ethics has come to the forefront.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Jim Jarchow Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Jim Jarchow

Graduate Research Papers

Education has been a large and important part of my life for many years. I took my own education pretty much for granted, at least through the high school years. This seemed to be a common attitude. It was an attitude, however, that started to change during my college years, during my years of preparation in the field of education.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Chris P. Jennings Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Chris P. Jennings

Graduate Research Papers

As I began thinking about going into education when I was younger, I really felt a strong need and desire to deal with people. I really wanted to work with people and share my ideas with everyone -- both young and old. Thinking about what I wanted to do when I grew up, and trying to figure out what college to go to, I had some guidance which has influenced me to pursue education and now administration. I grew up in a family who are administrators at the junior and high school levels. My father is an associate principal at …

Self Inventory And Reflective Practice: A Personal Case Study, Charles K. Johnson Jan 1992

Self Inventory And Reflective Practice: A Personal Case Study, Charles K. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

As I began composing the final draft of this reflective paper, seeking to articulate a personal professional vision for administrative practice, two broad streams of influence became apparent. For the past four years I have been employed by the Sac and Fox Tribe at the school it operates on the Mesquaki Indian Settlement near Tama, Iowa. For the last two of those years I served as the school's administrator. Since this comprises the entirety of my working experience as an educator, my thinking, values, and beliefs are directly tied to the nature of that setting and the events which occurred …

Working With Stepchildren: The Role Of The School Counselor, Susan M. Johnson Jan 1992

Working With Stepchildren: The Role Of The School Counselor, Susan M. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The structure of the family is constantly changing. Cherlin and Furstenberg (1983) predicted that by the year 2000, families of remarriages will be one of the types of families that dominate the personal lives of most Americans. A "remarried family" involves a married couple with the husband, the wife, or both in a second or subsequent marriage. Children under 18 in the home who were born before the remarriage occurred are considered stepchildren in the constituted stepfamily (Glick, 1988). Glick also reported that stepfamilies currently represent 17.4% of households with children under age 18 (Sims & Crosbie-Burnett, 1989).

The Behavioral And Emotional Effects Of Parental Divorce On Elementary School Children, Alice K. Kauten Jan 1992

The Behavioral And Emotional Effects Of Parental Divorce On Elementary School Children, Alice K. Kauten

Graduate Research Papers

Divorce has two purposes: The first purpose is to escape from the married partner and the marriage, while the second purpose is the hope of starting a new and happier life (Wallerstein & Blakeslee, 1989). Many people believe that time heals the hurt that canes from divorce. However, the painful effects can last for many years.

The School Counselor's Role With Children Of Alcoholics, Rona Messmore Jan 1992

The School Counselor's Role With Children Of Alcoholics, Rona Messmore

Graduate Research Papers

They can be found in every classroom of every school district in the United States. They are a special group of children considered to be a high-risk population. They have their own problems that can cause minor to severe psychological wounds. They are children of alcoholics (COA's), and their lives are affected by alcoholism's "hidden curriculum" (Gress, 1988, p. 18), which indicates that these students have a set of hidden problems that often go unnoticed and unserved. Because so many students are affected, schools are obligated to provide a special curriculum to meet the needs of this vast population.

Metaphors: An Avenue To Other Techniques, Kelley J. Algoe Jan 1992

Metaphors: An Avenue To Other Techniques, Kelley J. Algoe

Graduate Research Papers

"To describe life we need metaphors: objectivity will not suffice" (Minuchin, 1984, p. 11). Metaphors are a method to enhance our language, providing a clearer, more concrete understanding of the situations in life. The use of metaphors helps prepare clients to experience other therapeutic interventions more readily. Low functioning clients commonly have difficulty with therapeutic approaches which require abstract thinking. By normalizing and reframing the problem, metaphors provide openings for other therapies.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Besmellah Alekozai Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Besmellah Alekozai

Graduate Research Papers

With increasing concerns in education, attention has been focused on the roles and duties of the educational administrator, both in the operation of the schools and in the provision of that leadership. This is essential for maintaining the viability of public education in a dynamically changing society. The training of educational administrators has drastically changed, indicating a major shift in emphasis among those who assist to set the patterns of administration. Whereas the training of administrators previously emphasized the technological problems of school management, the new "movement" has stressed the values of administrative theory. The applications of the behavioral sciences …

The Psychology Of Occultism & Ritual Abuse, Cindy D. Whitmer Jan 1992

The Psychology Of Occultism & Ritual Abuse, Cindy D. Whitmer

Graduate Research Papers

For years psychological literature has included cases and treatment implications for individuals affected by emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Most recently, ritual abuse, a rather new topic in the mental health arena, has emerged, but unfortunately seems to be a problem that has been in existence a very long time. Some have said ritual abuse started with satanic worship dated as far back as 610 A.D. in Southeastern Europe (Daniels, 1989). Others disagreed, saying this form of worship did not appear until the Christian church was established (Kahaner, 1988), and that in the 19th century a new spiritualistic movement began …

Effectiveness Of The Iowa Family Preservation Project, Jennifer S. Werger Jan 1992

Effectiveness Of The Iowa Family Preservation Project, Jennifer S. Werger

Graduate Research Papers

In 1987 the Iowa legislature began looking at the number of foster care placements and their cost to the state (Rode, 1991). Between 1982-1987 there has been a 40% increase in foster care placements despite an 8% decline in the state's child population (Rode, 1991). Fuqua and Conger (1987) projected that the need for foster care in Iowa would continue to grow and the number of available foster care family homes would continue to decline. This increase was believed to be in part due to the lack of any formal statewide program with the capacity to intervene effectively in the …

The School Counselor's Role In Working With Elementary Students Diagnosed With Cancer, Sherrie J. Zeutenhorst Jan 1992

The School Counselor's Role In Working With Elementary Students Diagnosed With Cancer, Sherrie J. Zeutenhorst

Graduate Research Papers

The annual incidence of pediatric cancers in the United States is approximately 12 per 100,000 children and six to seven thousand cases are diagnosed each year. Cancer accounts for the greatest number of disease-related deaths in children under 16 years of age, exceeded only by accidents. Fifty to sixty percent of cancer patients achieve a 5-year disease-free survival and possible cure (Ross, 1984; Perry & Flanagan, 1986; Spinetta & Deasy-Spinetta, 1981).

Women In Poverty: Characteristics, Challenges And Treatment Implications, Lynda Quame Jan 1992

Women In Poverty: Characteristics, Challenges And Treatment Implications, Lynda Quame

Graduate Research Papers

In 1985 there were approximately 446,000 individuals living in poverty in Iowa, which is nearly 15.5% of the state's population of 2.88 million (Welfare Reform in Iowa, 1989). Theisen (1991) stated that nationally, greater than one third of those in poverty are women. Jenkins and Miller (1991) asserted that two out of three adults in poverty today are women and that one half of all households containing people in poverty are headed by women.

The Impact Of Childhood Death On The Surviving Sibling, Patricia J. Rottinghaus Jan 1992

The Impact Of Childhood Death On The Surviving Sibling, Patricia J. Rottinghaus

Graduate Research Papers

When a child is dying of kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, or cancer, the child is referred to as "the victim of chronic or terminal illness". That child is not the only victim. The destructive effects of such diseases spread to all members of the families of those affected. New events and activities such as the care of the patient, trips to the hospital, and absences of family members due to hospitalizations become a part of the everyday lives of these families. Family life, as it was once known, no longer appears to exist. Even periods of remission of the child's …
