Predicting Adolescent Academic Achievement: The Role Of Intrapersonal And Risk Behavior Factors, Stefanie Gill Scalcucci Jan 2018

Predicting Adolescent Academic Achievement: The Role Of Intrapersonal And Risk Behavior Factors, Stefanie Gill Scalcucci

Wayne State University Dissertations

There is a large body of research that shows moderate to strong correlations between academic achievement and various inter- and intra-personal variables. The aim of this study was to develop a model that explains the most variance and best predicts academic achievement in adolescence. Specifically, executive functioning, achievement goal orientation, academic self-efficacy, future orientation, and hope, from the cognitive domain, as well as school risk behaviors, social risk behaviors, loneliness, and mattering from the social domain were examined. Participants included 210 high school students (93 females, 117 males) from an agricultural school district in southeastern Michigan. In an aggregate model, …

The Effects Of Teaching Exponential Functions Using Authentic Problem Solving On Students’ Achievement And Attitude, Yamamah Sawalha Jan 2018

The Effects Of Teaching Exponential Functions Using Authentic Problem Solving On Students’ Achievement And Attitude, Yamamah Sawalha

Wayne State University Dissertations

Most of the current mathematics education focuses on procedures and pays very little attention to conceptual understanding in many classrooms. NCTM (2000) called for improving students’ understanding to help improve their achievement. To help prepare students for the future, they need to be taught to value mathematics and realize that it is relevant to their lives. Students need to use their mathematical knowledge to solve real life problems. This can’t be achieved by focusing only on the procedures and expecting students to understand how to apply it to real life. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect …

High School Adolescents' Academic Engagement, Behaviors, And Achievement: Associations With Intrapersonal Factors And Academic Support Systems, Elizabeth Suzanne Robtoy Jan 2017

High School Adolescents' Academic Engagement, Behaviors, And Achievement: Associations With Intrapersonal Factors And Academic Support Systems, Elizabeth Suzanne Robtoy

Wayne State University Dissertations

The current study investigated the roles of select intrapersonal and environmental factors in high school adolescents’ academic engagement, behavior, and achievement. This aforementioned combination of factors has not been considered for their combined ability to explain greater proportions of variance in academic engagement, behavior, and achievement, despite the fact that ecologically, there are multiple life contexts that interact to explain academic achievement development and this selection may provide important information. Participants were 415 high school students (171 males, 244 females) from a mid-western, suburban high school that enrolls about 1,285 students. Future educational goals, as well as executive functioning, emerged …

The Role Of Individual Character Strengths In Adolescent Academic Achievement And Risky School Behavior, Paul Deschamps Jan 2016

The Role Of Individual Character Strengths In Adolescent Academic Achievement And Risky School Behavior, Paul Deschamps

Wayne State University Dissertations

Adolescent achievement is a major developmental task in adolescence and reducing Risky School Behaviors is an important part of the process. Patterns of adolescent achievement and general development are the result of the cumulative process that includes a long history of experience and socialization in school, in the family, in the peer group, and in the community. This study is the first to expand understanding of these key interrelated but unique outcome variables of both Academic Achievement and risky School Behavior through examination of individual Character Strengths in the presence of other key intrapersonal and contextual variables from multiple systems …

A Cross-Sectional Study Of The Relations Between Parental Factors And Academic Achievement In High School Adolescents, Patricia Marie Lanzon Jan 2014

A Cross-Sectional Study Of The Relations Between Parental Factors And Academic Achievement In High School Adolescents, Patricia Marie Lanzon

Wayne State University Dissertations

Bronfenbrenner's (1979) ecological model was used as the theoretical model for this study of parental achievement factors that influence adolescent academic achievement. Many predictors are related to a child's potential for academic achievement. Of the most proximal are parental and family factors, which were the focus in this study. The proximal parental and family factors for this study were as follows: family structure, maternal and paternal parenting styles and parental involvement, parents' school and community involvement, parental attitude toward achievement, and free and reduced lunch status. Achievement as determined by the student's actual grade point average was the dependent variable. …

Policy and practice regarding in-grade level retention and their effects on high school graduation rates and successful student academic outcomes have currently assumed great importance in the education reform debate. Further, the effectiveness of our public schools and the achievement of our students have implications that can affect individuals and the communities in which they live. Now, more than ever, individual economic success and economic growth depend crucially on academic achievement and human capital. The purpose of this research …
