As early as 1926, typewriting began to change from a strictly vocational skill to a multi-use skill that included nonvocational aspects. Since the skills required for vocational purposes are not the same as those required for personal use, typewriting instructors developed courses for those interested in learning personal-use typewriting.

The overall objective of a personal-use typewriting class is to equip the students with enough skill and knowledge to be able to express themselves "directly on paper without stumbling over the mechanics of either typing or language skills." Transcription is the ultimate goal of shorthand, according to Karaim, and mailable copy and rapid production are the primary aims of transcription. The ability to transcribe shorthand notes into usable printed form should be acquired before a stenographer has a marketable shorthand skill. Driska writes that "no matter how skillful the shorthand student may be in recording dictation, she is not properly fitted for work in an office unless she can transcribe her notes quickly and accurately."

The purpose of this study was to compare the relative effectiveness of teaching intermediate typewriting at Utah State University during the Spring and Fall Quarters, 1971, utilizing a system incorporating prepared video tapes with the conventional teacher presentation method.

There were 60 experimental and 60 control students used in the experiment. Those students in the experimental group received all their instruction via prepared video tapes while the control group received all their instruction in the conventional teacher presentation.
