Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This interdisciplinary portfolio is an investigation into ecological communication through pedagogical design, online collaborative learning spaces, digital and print media, and creative writing. Braiding lenses of queer ecology, decolonial studies, anarchism, and collaborative and creative practice, this work hopes to explore the field of environmental communication through avenues that are reciprocal, community-driven, and oriented towards environmental justice and collective, intersectional liberation. Through the three distinct components of 1) the creation and facilitation of an online learning community, the Spiritual Ecology Study Club at Advaya, 2) the editing and production of two issues of Camas Magazine, an environmental literary magazine based …
Environmental Education In Informal Learning Spaces: Integration, Design, And Access, Maya S. Gutierrez
Environmental Education In Informal Learning Spaces: Integration, Design, And Access, Maya S. Gutierrez
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
In this portfolio, I will focus on using learning spaces to facilitate environmental education and promote environmental literacy. I will discuss the incorporation of the framework of environmental education into an experiential and informal learning environment; the creation of a curriculum that fuses formal and informal learning, providing upper elementary students opportunities to participate in hands-on experiential learning opportunities of environmental education; and the direct and indirect benefits nature-based experiences can provide when implemented into a therapeutic group home. Embedded throughout is an environmental education framework that has been adapted for the diverse setting and requirements of the respective organization …

Introductory Calculus: Through The Lenses Of Covariation And Approximation, Caleb Huber
Introductory Calculus: Through The Lenses Of Covariation And Approximation, Caleb Huber
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
Over the course of a year, I investigated reformative approaches to the teaching of calculus. My research revealed the substantial findings of two educators, Michael Oehrtman and Pat Thompson, and inspired me to design a course based upon two key ideas, covariation and approximation metaphors. Over a period of six weeks, I taught a course tailored around these ideas and documented student responses to both classroom activities and quizzes. Responses were organized intonarratives, covariation, rates of change, limits, and delta notation. Covariation with respect to rates of change was found to be incredibly complex, and students would often see it …
Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson
Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
The theme of my portfolio is conservation education, using birds as an example of how to connect people of all ages to their natural environment. Birds were chosen as an example because of a personal curiosity for the animal, and because they are an accessible and tangible element of nature for all people, urban and rural. The first component is a Curriculum Development Guide created for the Wings Over Water program of the Montana Natural History Center. It synthesizes scientific research on Ospreys, relates central themes of the literature to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and provides inventive activity ideas …
