Kon Tiki, a new Norwegian film, based on the 1947 expedition of Thor Heyerdahl of his sailing across the Pacific Ocean from South America to Polynesia, will be featured at the Collins Center for the Arts on Thursday, October I0,2073 at 7:00 p.m. Heyerdahl's epic 4,300 miles, 1-01-day voyage on a balsa wood raft captured the popular imagination of the period. Heyerdahl's 1948 book on the voyage became a best seller and a documentary film directed by Heyerdahl won an Academy Award in 1951. This new movie, Kon-Tiki (20t2) is a historical dramatization directed by Norwegian Joachim Ronning. It was …

"Dear Darwin", the opening concert of our 2013-I4 Faculty Chamber Series, will feature soprano Nancy Ellen Ogle and pianist Ginger Yang Hwalek in song settings by Maine composer Scott Brickman of Kathleen Ellis' book of poetry inspired by Charles Darwin. These songs are being recorded this year for a commercial album on the Parma Recording label. Professor Scott Brickman of the UM Fort Kent Music Department, will travel to Orono to meet with music classes and talk about the concert, the collaboration and the music recording industry. Bryan Davis is a trumpet player, originally from the UK, now residing in New York City, USA. He received his formal musical training at Leeds College of Music but considers "the road" as his true education. V/ith 20 years of professional experience to his credit, Bryan continues to learn from the thousands of musicians he has performed with around the world. His trumpet teachers include J. Brian Brown, Richard Iles, Dick Hawdon, Brian Lynch and Roger Ingram. What is the legacy of the book in the digital age? Bibliopoetics, a symposium sponsored by the University of Maine Humanities Initiative and the National Poetry Foundation, will investigate the meaning of the term bibliopoetics as an organizing principle of the author's relationship to books, in addition to the challenges that the digital poses to the existence of the book.

Lydia Forbes is an internationally renowned soloist and chamber music performer. She has concertized throughout Europe with Ensemble L'Archibudelli,Zephyr Kwartet, Het Schoenberg Ensemble, Sinfonietta Amsterdam, Osiris Trio, I Fiamminghi, and Ensemble Explorations. The Math Science Program specifically targets students who are interested in pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) college majors and career fields, and who are looking for new, challenging academic opportunities not offered in their schools. A year round program, UBMS includes academic and summer opportunities. Academic Counselors meet with students at their high schools for academic services September through May, and in turn students spend six intensive weeks during June and July on the University of Maine’s Orono campus for our summer program.
