Minority Student Perceptions Of Mental Health, Emily Camacho Jan 2016

Minority Student Perceptions Of Mental Health, Emily Camacho

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The current study explored the use of mental health services by minority students at South Dakota State University (SDSU) using thematic analysis. There are numerous reasons that college students choose not to utilize counseling services even though they may be needed. For example, students may avoid counseling out of fear of cultural stigma associated with help-seeking (Ægisdottír et al., 2011). Further, minority students may be more likely to use non-counseling help services such as religious organizations or friends and family in place of formal counseling because they believe that counselors are racially biased, or that there is a lack of …

A Guided Inquiry-Based Laboratory Experiment: Synthesis And Characterization Of Various Phthiocol Complexes, Turina Jangula Jan 2016

A Guided Inquiry-Based Laboratory Experiment: Synthesis And Characterization Of Various Phthiocol Complexes, Turina Jangula

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Despite proven effectiveness of constructivist guided-inquiry based instruction for college chemistry courses, teaching in advanced chemistry courses such as inorganic chemistry remains very much traditional. This persistence of traditional instructional approaches could be attributed to the lack of inquiry-based curriculum materials for these courses. In this paper a guided-inquiry based inorganic laboratory experiment on the synthesis and characterization of phthiocol complexes with four different metals is presented along with suggestions for implementation as a laboratory activity. The experiment is unique in terms of its development based on a social constructivist framework and has student discussion and conceptual understanding of inorganic …

Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety: Midwestern Language Learner Exploration, Justin J. Mahutga Jan 2016

Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety: Midwestern Language Learner Exploration, Justin J. Mahutga

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Numerous studies in the communication discipline have explored the negative impacts of communication apprehension on college students and ways instruction can help reduce such anxiety. Study of a specific form of apprehension, foreign language anxiety, has received far less scholarly attention, but could serve college students well. Therefore, the current study attempts to establish a solid basis for continuing research aimed at the currently underserved ESL/EFL (English as a second/foreign language) learning community as well as for English-speaking foreign language learners at one mid-sized Midwestern university. The objective of this study is to establish a baseline for understanding the extent …

Ally Development: Preparing Student Affairs Professionals To Work With American Indian Students, Corynna B. Nelson Jan 2016

Ally Development: Preparing Student Affairs Professionals To Work With American Indian Students, Corynna B. Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous literature on ally identity development for higher education professionals has been focused mostly on White identity development, with little to no suggestions for those working with American Indian student populations (Broido, 2000; Edwards, 2006; Evans & Wall, 1991; Reason, Millar, A, & Scales, 2005). A conceptual model written by Keith E. Edwards (2006) focused on three stages of aspiring ally identity development with each identity attached to frequently experienced behaviors and viewpoints. This relatable model created a way to offer autoethnographical examples of an aspiring ally’s development to suggest adaptations for non-Native student affairs professionals working with Native student …

Preparing New Professionals In Studnet Affairs: A Supervisory Model To Maximize Graduate Student Success, Bryan Romsa, Katelyn Romsa Jan 2016

Preparing New Professionals In Studnet Affairs: A Supervisory Model To Maximize Graduate Student Success, Bryan Romsa, Katelyn Romsa

Counseling and Human Development Faculty Publications

Effective preparation for graduate students pursuing work in the field of college student affairs most often includes both a formal classroom experience as well as a supervised practical experience, such as internships or graduate assistantships (Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, 2012). A formal classroom experience typically consists of specific learning outcomes, regular and structured class meetings, and educational experiences designed by the instructor. This experience is vital to graduate student growth of and development but is insufficient in preparing them for the real-world experiences they will soon face. Although supervised experiences have historically been a required …

A Descriptive Study Of International Students’ Needs And Service Satisfaction At South Dakota State University, Xiaoyu Guo Jan 2016

A Descriptive Study Of International Students’ Needs And Service Satisfaction At South Dakota State University, Xiaoyu Guo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The growing international educational marketplace attracts students from all over the world. These students not only bring economic benefits to the host countries, but bring their cultures and languages as well. However, international students face challenges and have needs and expectations when studying abroad. They often do not know how to find services or information they need across the university to adjust smoothly in this new environment. Meanwhile, the host universities may not fully address these international students’ special needs because they have limited useful information to understand these students. This researcher conducted a study seeking to identify international students’ …

Understanding The Factors Associated With Engaged Scholarship: A Case Study Of Sociologists In The University Of Cape Coast, Ghana, Rebecca Maame Ahima Tachie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although initially established for the purpose of training teachers and management staff for the formal education sector, one of the major objectives of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) is to establish partnerships with both local and international communities and organizations in ways that simultaneously enhance academic scholarship and socioeconomic development. For this reason, this study examined the significance of university policies on community engagement and the practice of public sociology. Specifically, the influence of epistemological dispositions and perceptions concerning disciplinary, institutional and social demands on engaged scholarship are addressed. The challenges associated with the practice of engaged scholarship and …

The Relationship Of Growth Mindset And Goal-Setting In A First-Year College Course, Chelsea E. Sorensen Jan 2016

The Relationship Of Growth Mindset And Goal-Setting In A First-Year College Course, Chelsea E. Sorensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has found that mindset and goal orientation are intricately related in motivation and academic achievement, which holds significant implications for students in higher education (Dweck, 2009). While growth mindset-focused intervention has been studied, finding improvement in mastery goal-setting (Blackwell, Trzesniewski, and Dweck, 2007), goal-focused intervention accounting for student mindset has not. Firstyear college students’ implicit theory of intelligence, or mindset, was measured before they were randomly assigned to set either a mastery- or performance-based goal in relation to their first exam in a difficult chemistry course. Upon receiving their first exam score, students were free to set whatever …
