This research has focused on the creation of the Freire-UDL Literacy-Alfabetización Model and its application to practice in the development of a Teacher’s Guide to support educators in teaching literacy/alfabetización to nonliterate Spanish-speaking students with limited or interrupted formal education (SIFE/SLIFE) in 40 hours or less. In this presentation, I will share my ongoing case study research on factors that support reading motivation and engagement for three emergent bilingual learners (BLS) in my grade six English language arts classes. I will present a variety of information gained through both quantitative and qualitative research methods, and share strategies that been helpful to engaging these sixth graders. Feedback from other practitioners will be solicited.

The audience will learn about the benefit of transitional bilingual education programs as well as the curriculum taught to my first and second grade students. They will also learn the strategies I have implemented to instill empathy and hold expectations for students who are struggling academically and socioeconomically. There will be a large amount of research on transitional bilingual education programs, multicultural teaching practices, multicultural students, and teaching empathy in an elementary school classroom.
