The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) in Washington State has adopted Common Core Standards. The reading curriculum given to teachers most often reflects the appropriate grade level materials, but does not necessarily meet common core standards, engage students in learning, or prepare students to pass the end of year exams. In this study, engaging classroom literacy activities will be developed and aligned with learning targets associated with common core standards for sixth grade students. A Four-Stage Program Of Enrichment In Reading For Gifted Junior High School Students, Mina Winifred Welch

The needs of gifted students and strategies for meeting those needs were studied. A four- stage enrichment model was designed, accompanied by a teacher's guide for implementation of a sample application of the model at the seventh grade level. The four stages of enrichment activities included in the model were (1) exploratory activities beyond the regular curriculum, (2) activities to develop critical reading and thinking skills, (3) activities for improvement of information-gathering skills, and (4) a mentorship phase.

It was the purpose of this study to compare the test scores of one group of children who took the verbal ability section of the sixth grade School and College Ability Test (SCAT) with the test scores of the same group of children on the eighth grade reading Sequential Test of Educational Progress (STEP) and to determine the degree of relationship between the tests.

One purpose of this study was to compare a reading program taught using a basic reading text, supplemental books, and teacher motivation to a reading program designed as an independent, developmental, multi-level program that utilizes graphic and ego motivation. Another purpose was to find out if pupils in the program will show a significantly greater gain in reading achievement than do pupils in the other.

The purpose of this study was (1) to determine if a classroom teacher could effect an increase in interest in independent reading shown by an intermediate level class through an intensified program of stimulation as measured against the reading interests evidenced by a comparable class not receiving the extra stimulation, and (2) to determine to what extent if any this stimulation of reading interests affected reading ability as measured by a standardized reading achievement test.

Much concern has been expressed over whether or not the schools are doing an adequate job of teaching reading. This problem can best be attacked in one of two ways. It can be approached through a study of the teacher or of the pupil. Since a multitude of studies have been made concerning student needs and inadequacies in reading this study will concern itself with the teacher, his needs and his inadequacies in teaching reading.
