Wearing Makeup Is Not An Indicator Of Being Anti-Feminist, Kim Crowley
Wearing Makeup Is Not An Indicator Of Being Anti-Feminist, Kim Crowley
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Modern feminist discourse has struggled with a certain dilemma: the paradoxes of makeup and fashion. These two topics pose questions from both viewpoints. One may ask: are we meant to support makeup as an industry and hobby, to take pride in our skillfully groomed brows and pretty dresses that make us feel more beautiful? Or are our cultural notions of beauty something to fight against--another means of control, forcing us to force more on appearances than we should?

Diversity Week Highlights Many Walks Of Life Across Umaine Community, Josh Fabel
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
According to Director of Multicultural Student Life, Silvestre Guzman, Diversity Week has occurred on the UMaine campus for at least eight years, and has become a popular string of events within the past few years. This year, the week was comprised of many smaller events that occurred everyday such as meditation, karaoke and a couple of educational seminars on different diversity topics, such as religion. The events were put together with the assistance of the Caribbean Club, The Student Heritage Alliance Council and the Muslim Students Association as well as other heritage groups on campus.

This is a class project from ARTH 542: American Architecture taught at the University of South Carolina by Lydia Mattice Brandt in Spring 2016.
With more Americans attending college than ever before; urban renewal; racial integration; the expansion of coeducation; and the architecture community’s advocacy for holistic relationship between planning, architecture, and landscape architecture, the American college campus developed rapidly and dramatically in the mid twentieth century. Using the University of South Carolina’s Columbia Campus as a case study, this project explores the history of American architecture in the mid-twentieth century.

Session D-4: From Guernica To Nuremberg: Teaching Human Rights Themes In Mid-20th-Century History, Peter Carroll, Eric Smith
Professional Learning Day
A critical turning point in modern warfare—aviation, civilian casualties, and population displacement during the Spanish Civil War and World War II—led to the Nuremberg Tribunals and UN Declaration of Human Rights, foreshadowing contemporary debates about bombing, drones, refugees/immigration, and interventionist foreign policies. This session will span World History and US History, drawing from free archival primary sources (graphic and textual) that reveal changing perceptions of warfare.
Session C-4: Mary Lincoln’S Journey, Mary Kerr
Session C-4: Mary Lincoln’S Journey, Mary Kerr
Professional Learning Day
Lincoln's Journey will detail in an interesting and objective manner the pivotal points in her life: early feelings about slavery, the decision to leave Lexington and settle in Springfield, IL, being a single mother while her husband was "riding the circuit", her continued support of Lincoln as a national politician, restoration of the White House, and her inability to make positive decisions after Lincoln's assassination. In the end she was able to live on a budget and died with dignity. The presentation follows the book Mary Lincoln's Journey by Kerr and Kerr in which primary sources are emphasized.
Session B-4: Who Freed The Slaves? Emancipation And The Sources Of Social Change, David Heineman
Session B-4: Who Freed The Slaves? Emancipation And The Sources Of Social Change, David Heineman
Professional Learning Day
Abraham Lincoln argued that all knew slavery was “somehow the cause of the war”. And every student knows that one of the most significant outcomes of the Civil War was the abolition of slavery. But how did this happen? Who actually freed the slaves? In this session, we’ll model a lesson that teachers can use, rooted in historical thinking and primary sources that helps students engage in authentic historical inquiry about a turning point in our nation’s past.

Humanization Of Non-Violent Inmates Critical To Prison Reform, Kim Crowley
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
The United States prison system is in desperate need of reform. We are the world’s leading jailer, creating trends of mass incarceration, racial disparity and widespread prison overpopulation. The statistics surrounding U.S. criminal justice, specifically our national prison system, are dismal at best. Over 2 million U.S. citizens are currently in prison. State prisons, as a group, exceed their maximum nominal inmate capacity by 15 percent. Federal prisons exceed their capacity even more so by 36 percent.

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
If you’re a part of the thousands of people that gripe about the continuing political ads, relentless telephone calls, and debate analyses that clog up the daily news, some bad news awaits you: this election season is just getting started. By next week, people in Iowa and New Hampshire will cast the first votes of the 2016 presidential election cycle, creating a visual approximation on who may be the United States’ 45th president. This campaign process has been unique to say the least, particularly with the Republican nominees. For example, to many people’s surprise, political outsiders Donald Trump and Ben Carson …
