Franklin D. Roosevelt: The Media, His Physical Image, And Teaching Implications, Eric R. Waples

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

This thesis consists of three distinct chapters, each with a focus on the general theme of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the media, and his image. Chapter I is a historiography that traces the scholarly discussion of Roosevelt and the media from the late 1970s until the early 21st century. It argues that there was a shift in research that occurred in the 1980s. Where scholarship originally focused intently on how FDR used the media to run the country, it transitioned towards an exclusive concentration on how he used the media to minimize the public’s perception of his disability. Chapter ...

Prohibition Era Rochester: A Family Affair, Russell G. Hendrick

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

This project researched the largely overlooked historical topic of Rochester, NY during the Prohibition Era. It draws upon a wide variety of sources, including oral history from the author’s family who were directly involved in the illegal sale of alcohol in Rochester. These stories offer unique insight into the heretofore-undocumented side of the speakeasy operators. The combination of oral history and more traditional research offers a diverse interpretation of Rochester NY during the Prohibition Era. The project also includes a historiography of research on Prohibition in general and Rochester specifically as well as a DBQ designed for 8th ...

The History Of Gun Control In The United States, Daniel Greco Dec 2013

The History Of Gun Control In The United States, Daniel Greco

Senior Honors Theses

Gun control is one of today’s most controversial topics, bringing about two different, yet passionate arguments. Those who are “pro-gun” argue that firearms are a basic fundamental right given to American citizens by the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Advocates for gun control argue that firearms lead to more deaths, and should be restricted to avoid shooting tragedies. Regardless of one’s personal stance on this issue, it is undeniable that gun control is one of the United States’ most debated topics. This paper will take a historical approach to gun control in the United States, and will be ...

Susan Bauer's 2003 Theory Of Well-Educated Mind: Could The Classical Approach To Teaching History Work In Southern California History K12 Classrooms?, Tomasz B. Stanek Nov 2013

Susan Bauer's 2003 Theory Of Well-Educated Mind: Could The Classical Approach To Teaching History Work In Southern California History K12 Classrooms?, Tomasz B. Stanek

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

The main purpose of this research evolved from the publication of S. W. Bauer Well-educated mind, a study of the significance of new methods of teaching history course. Bauer (2003) argues that the grammarian approach of simple recognition and memorization removes students from reading primary sources. This theory suggests a new methodology for the instructors and students through the three-stage process of grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric preparation with aid of primary sources or “great books list”. This paper supports Bauer’s thesis and provides evidence through extensive interviews that indeed this concept of pedagogy is present in Southern California schools.

The important identity of a responsible media is playing an unbiased role in reporting a matter without giving unnecessary hype to attract the attention of the gullible public with the object of making money and money only. After reporting properly the media can educate the public to form their own opinion in the matters of public interest. Throughout the centuries, the world has never existed without information and communication, hence the inexhaustible essence of mass media. The government has the power to either make or reject whatever that will exist within its environment. It also determines how free the mass ...

Is Jefferson A Founding Father Of Democratic Education? A Response To "Jefferson And The Ideology Of Democratic Schooling", Johann Neem

Democracy and Education

This response argues that it is reasonable to consider Thomas Jefferson a proponent of democratic education. It suggests that Jefferson's education proposals sought to ensure the wide distribution of knowledge and that Jefferson's legacy remains important to us today.

Three wars. A devastating economic depression. Construction of an entirely new campus from scratch. And all in 50 years.

The period that began as World War I erupted and ended as the tumult of the 1960s loomed was marked by a series of unprecedented events that could have mortally wounded a modestly funded liberal arts college in central Maine. The Great War emptied the campus. World War II turned Colby into a military training center. The bold decision to move the College to Mayflower Hill was sandwiched by the Depression and the Korean War and marked by the return of ...
