Ouachita Baptist University senior Jason Potts was named this year’s winner of the W. Francis and Mary McBeth Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition on Dec. 9. He also took home first place in the competition last year. The competition is sponsored by Mary McBeth in honor of her late husband, W. Implementing Vocational Training At Escuela Quiteña De Estudios Bíblicos, Joshua K. Marcum

This DMin project addressed the problem of the absence of a viable training model to equip graduates of EQEB (Escuela Quiteña de Estudios Biblicos) for self-sustaining ministry. Based upon a theology of vocation, the project implemented and evaluated the inclusion of a technical-skills component to EQEB’s current seminary training. The project followed the integration of sixteen EQEB students in the vocational program implemented during the 2015-2016 school year. Qualitative research data gathered from five group interviews with these students, my own field notes, and a faculty interview provided the substance upon which I based the project´s findings. Ouachita Baptist University will host Tiger Steel in concert in Mabee Fine Art’s McBeth Recital Hall on Monday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Dr. Ryan Lewis, assistant professor of music, directs the steel drum ensemble. He said he seeks to celebrate the instruments’ history by ensuring that the ensemble “performs at least 50 percent Trinidadian calypso and soca as a way to honor the nation from which the instruments originated.”

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will present A Festival of Christmas on Dec. 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. The theme for the 25th annual musical production is “The Spirit of Christmas!”

Ouachita vocal ensembles Concert Choir, Ouachita Singers, Women’s Chorus and Ouachita Sounds will all be featured in the performance. Assisting Ouachita’s student performers will be local children in the Ouachita Honor Choir and Ouachita’s Handbell Ringers. The pit band will feature students from Ouachita’s instrumental program.

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will present its 20th annual A Service of Lessons and Carols on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The service is free and open to the public.

The service features nine scripture readings from the books of Genesis, Isaiah, Matthew, Luke and John. Each reading is followed by a carol that reflects Advent and Christmas themes. Ian Cosh, vice president for community and international engagement, will serve as this year’s narrator.

Ouachita Baptist University recently hosted the 41st annual Southern Region NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) Conference and Student Auditions on the university’s Arkadelphia campus. Approximately 25 schools were represented from Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Thirteen Ouachita students were named finalists in the event, the largest number of finalists for any school in the competition. The finalists included two Ouachita students who were honored in two separate categories each for a total of 15 finalist recognitions.

Caldwell graduated from Ouachita with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and studied trumpet under Dr. Craig Hamilton, Ouachita’s Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands. She has since earned her master’s degree in trumpet and currently is completing her doctorate in trumpet at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Barbara Pemberton, director of Ouachita Baptist University’s Carl Goodson Honors Program and professor of Christian missions, presented at the National Collegiate Honors Council’s 51st annual conference. The conference was held Oct. 12-16 in Seattle, Wash.

The conference attracts nearly 2,000 honors students and administrators from all 50 states and several other nations. The national submission process for presenters is highly selective, with hundreds of students and faculty submitting proposals each year.

Recent media reports have increased awareness of workplace incivility and bullying. However, the literature regarding workplace incivility and bullying in academic libraries is under reported and under researched. This study examines the current state of librarians’ perceptions on workplace incivility and bullying and evaluates the effects of bullying from organizational and individual perspectives. Bullying was measured based on the librarian’s responses to the Negative Acts Questionnaire, including both experienced bullying and witnessed bullying. The authors introduce a conceptual framework to understand the motivating structures, precipitating circumstances, and enabling structures that lead to bullying in the library. Ouachita Baptist University’s Rosemary Adams Department of Visual Arts will host Lauren Teague in her senior art exhibit, “Converge.” The exhibit will be on display in Moses-Provine Hall’s Rosemary Gossett Adams Gallery from Nov. 1-15. A reception will be held Saturday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m.

Teague is a senior graphic design major from Jonesboro, Ark. She describes her work as either bright and full of color or dark and twisted. For her senior show, Teague wanted to portray the two extremes as a spectrum.

Calvert is professor of art and the director of the Russell Fine Arts Gallery at Henderson State University. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kent State University and his Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

The French comedy, written by Molière, is a satire on academic pretention, female education and precociousness. Ouachita Baptist University will host Dr. Youmee Kim in concert on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center. The recital is free and open to the public.

Dr. Kim, an acclaimed pianist, is a specialist in American contemporary piano music. Currently an assistant professor of piano at Ohio University, she holds a Master of Music degree from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea; a Master of Music degree from Indiana University; and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from Ohio State University.

Honoring its seventh class of Ouachita Alumni Milestone Awards recipients, Ouachita Baptist University recognized outstanding graduates from the classes of 1966, 1976, 1986, 1996 and 2006 at halftime of the Homecoming football game Oct. 15. The alumni honorees were selected by a committee of Ouachita faculty and staff to represent their milestone reunion classes.

This year’s Homecoming festivities also included the presentation of a Worthy Ouachitonian Award by Ouachita President Ben Sells.
