The Effects Of Nautilus Circuit Weight Training On Aerobic Capacity, Rhonda M. Ludwig
The Effects Of Nautilus Circuit Weight Training On Aerobic Capacity, Rhonda M. Ludwig
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to identify whether Nautilus Circuit Training effected maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) levels of novice weight trainers. Fourteen college age male and female subjects (18-23 years old) from physical education classes at Western Michigan University participated in a six week Nautilus Training Program (NTP). Each subject performed a pre and post maximal treadmill graded exercise test to determine VO2max levels. A randomized block ANOVA design was used to analyze the dependent variable, VO2max. The mean of the pre-test VO2max level (42.83 ml x O2/kg/min) was …

An Assessment Of The Relationship Between Decision-Makers' Opinions About Comprehensive Sex Education And Factors That Influence Those Opinions, M. Terri Voit-Devine
Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to investigate decision-makers' opinions about what was to be contained in comprehensive sex education programs, the degree to which decision makers believed course information was likely to be part of their own curriculum, and how much support they believed the community would give to various parts of the curriculum.
The instrument used in the study was created by combining parts of surveys by Wayne (1981) and Marini and Jones (1983). The study compared the opinions of decision makers about guidelines to be used when implementing sex education, reasons for offering sex education, reasons for …
The Effects Of An Employee Fitness Program On Absenteeism And Health Care Costs, Brian C. Bell
The Effects Of An Employee Fitness Program On Absenteeism And Health Care Costs, Brian C. Bell
Student Work
Health care expenditures in the United States have continued to climb at an alarming rate. In 1982, health care expenditures accounted for nearly $322.4 billion of the gross national product (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1982). Health care expenditures are expected to consume nearly 12 percent of the nation's economic output by the year 1990, reaching nearly $756 billion in projected costs (Cullen and Towe, 1983). Although health care costs have climbed at an annual rate of less than 10 percent, these costs have continued to increase in the private sector, which currently absorbs one-fourth of the nation's …
Norms For The 5-Minute Run Test For College Men And Women, Michael R. Samardzija
Norms For The 5-Minute Run Test For College Men And Women, Michael R. Samardzija
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Previous studies have demonstrated that the 5-minute run test (5MRT) is a valid test in determining cardiovascular (CV) endurance. This study was done to develop norms for the 5MRT for college-age students. The subjects were 195 men and 191 women attending Brooklyn College and Loma Linda University. Test-retest reliability was established (r=0.93) for the 5MRT with 20 subjects. The distance run on the 5MRT by all the subjects were used to develop norms using percentiles. Fitness categories were established using standard deviations from the mean.

The number of men and women with lower extremity disability is growing {Pollock, Miller, Linnerind, Laughridge, Coleman, and Alexander, 1974). A chief cause of this growth is an increase in the number of accidents damaging the spinal column (Pollock et al., 1974). However, many individuals are also born with these types of disabilities, and one of the causes is a disease termed spina bifida. Spina bifida occurs in about 3 per 1000 live births (Batshaw & Perret, 1981). The spine of children born with this defect is bifida and may be exposed, along with nervous tissue surrounding the area, on …
The Effect Of A Corporate Fitness Program On Worker Productivity, Joseph A. Leutzinger
The Effect Of A Corporate Fitness Program On Worker Productivity, Joseph A. Leutzinger
Student Work
Other parts of the world, namely Europe and Asia, are out producing the United States. According to Steers & Porter (1987), the U.S. ranked sixth among seven leading industrial nations in productivity increases from 1968-1978. An unhealthy life-style is one factor causing decreased productivity in the U.S. (Cox, Shephard & Corey, 1981). Fitness level, work capacity, mental fatigue and stress are related to life-style and have an impact on productivity (Falkenberg, 1987). It is estimated that two-thirds of all businesses in the U.S. with fifty or more employees offer some type of health promotion program (McLemore & Dolzier, 1987). These …

An Analysis Of The National Athletic Trainers Association Clinical Clock Hour Requirement For Certification, Timothy Walter Kilroy
An Analysis Of The National Athletic Trainers Association Clinical Clock Hour Requirement For Certification, Timothy Walter Kilroy
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
This study focused on the clinical clock hour requirement mandated by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Research in the development of clinical clock hours was vague and inconsistent with what students were actually accumulating in athletic training field experience.
The primary purpose of this study was to analyze the mandatory requirement of clinical clock hours for athletic training students to determine the relationship between the present NATA requirements and passing the NATA Certification Examination.
The secondary purpose was to record athletic training students' clinical clock hours and analyze differences of these hours by districts, years, athletic training programs, and passing …
The Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On Anxiety In Pregnant Women, Janet L. Fourman
The Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On Anxiety In Pregnant Women, Janet L. Fourman
Dissertations
The objective of this study was to determine if aerobic exercise affects trait anxiety in pregnant women and if selected demographic variables relate to trait anxiety. These variables were age, occupation, family income, general physical and mental health, education, lifestyle, and previous exercise history. The independent variable was aerobic exercise. The dependent variable was anxiety which was measured by the trait portion of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger, 1983).
This research was quasi-experimental and used the Solomon Four-Group Design. The experimental group consisted of women who participated in a Pregnancy Fitness Aerobic exercise program for the duration of their pregnancies. …
A Biomechanical Analysis Of The Effect Wear Patterns Of Running Shoes Have On Kinematic Variables Of The Lower Extremities, Audrey E. Randall
A Biomechanical Analysis Of The Effect Wear Patterns Of Running Shoes Have On Kinematic Variables Of The Lower Extremities, Audrey E. Randall
Masters Theses
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between wear patterns of running shoes and selected kinematic variables of the lower extremities. Statistical analyses were completed by using a case study design for two male subjects. Subjects were filmed for ten strides on six different sessions over a three-month period. A two-way ANOVA design, with repeated measures, evaluated the dependent variables: (a) footstrike, (b) midstance and (c) toeoff phases. The degree of change was determined by digitizing ten points on the body. A University of California, Los Angeles, BMDP2V statistical package was used to determine differences between means. …

A History Of The Men's Intramural Program At Brigham Young University, David A. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compile and present an organized and complete history of the Men's Intramural Program at Brigham Young University.
The Brigham Young University Intramural Program had its beginning early in Brigham Young Academy history. The intramural program originated as an outgrowth of the physical education instructional program. Prior to 1954 the intramural program was part of the Physical Education Department and the Chairman of that department gave leadership to the intramural program by assigning part-time directors and student managers to organize sporting events. Since 1954 a full-time director has been employed as Intramural Director. The …

Development Of Data Base Software To Facilitate Instrument Selection In The Adapted Physical Education Assessment Process, Charles Jay Anema
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study discussed in this thesis was to compile adapted physical education assessment instrument information into a matrix which matches test categories with parameters appropriate to the selection of a specific assessment instrument. From this matrix, a data base software program was developed. Use of the data base software program and thesis will enable the adapted physical educator to select a proper assessment instrument.
