Since 2013, the majority of students served by the public school system in the United States have been considered “low-income” by the federal government. The stressors associated with low socioeconomic status significantly increase risk for social, emotional and behavioral challenges at all age levels, but can be particularly damaging to adolescents coping with heightened stress levels related to the intense multi-dimensional changes that define this developmental period. As the correlation between economic disadvantage and negative socio-emotional and academic outcomes is increasingly evidenced, schools have begun to recognize their responsibility for providing preventative mental health care to high-risk students. This study focused on the types of messages female middle school students receive about their gender from their peers. Specifically, it looked at microaggressions, which are sexist messages from peers, and microaffirmations, which are positive and affirming messages from peers. There were four goals of this study. First, to check if the Students Affirming Girls in Middle School scale (SAG-MS), a scale created for this study, could consistently measure microaggressions and microaffirmations. La presente investigación tuvo como tema el desarrollo de la empatía en adolescentes. El objetivo principal fue evaluar la efectividad de actividades que permitieran fomentar la empatía en adolescentes dentro de las clases sabatinas de francés en el colegio Latino-francés de Bogotá. Tras una revisión teórica, se seleccionaron y se implementaron actividades que permitirían fomentar la empatía, y se realizó un estudio de caso para evaluar su efectividad.
