This study examined whether students were reaching automaticity with single digit multiplication facts. A fourteen question interview was used to collect data. The first three questions asked the student basic information about themselves and their current math teacher. The next seven questions were math facts. The math facts chosen for the interview were a range of difficulty, starting with a simple problem like 1 x 9 and increasing in difficulty to 6 x 9. Second language (L2) acquisition has received increasing interest due to the large number of people immigrating or learning an L2 (e.g., Statistics Canada, 2016). Word reading fluency has been found to be a strong predictor of text reading fluency and comprehension (Fuchs, Fuchs, Hosp & Jenkins, 2001). For people learning to read in L2, skills such as oral reading fluency serve as an indicator of overall reading competence in their L2. Technology is part of everyday life for most adults and children. Digital technologies allow children to engage with technology and the digital world earlier in their development than previously experienced (Orlando, 2011; Plowman, Stevenson, Stephen, & McPake, 2012). Two studies were conducted to explore joint media-based interactions of parents and their children. Parental views, age, gender, experience and familiarity with technology were considered in conjunction with parent-child interactions when engaged with stationary and mobile computers and when engaged with easy and difficult to navigate software. Delay discounting is a basic behavioral process that has been found to predict addictive behaviors, and more recently, other mental health problems. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), is a transdiagnostic treatment that appears to alter delay discounting, possibly through reducing psychological inflexibility. The current study sought to further bridge research on delay discounting and ACT by examining the relation of delay discounting to a broad range of selfreported mental health problems and measures of psychological inflexibility. There are ongoing questions regarding the similarities and differences in the clinical impact and processes of change for cognitive restructuring and cognitive defusion. This clinical component test compared 87 adults high in self-criticism randomized to a cognitive defusion mobile app, restructuring app, or waitlist condition for two weeks. Equivalent improvements were found from the defusion and restructuring apps relative to the waitlist in self-criticism and distress as well as decentering, self-compassion, and dysfunctional attitudes. However, the defusion condition had a more consistent pattern of improvements relative to waitlist. This study examined the transdiagnostic effect of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on impulsive decision making in a community sample. Forty adults were randomized to eight individual sessions of ACT or an inactive control. Participants completed pre-, mid-, and post-assessments for psychological symptoms, overall behavior change, valued living, delay discounting, psychological flexibility, and distress tolerance. Data were analyzed with multilevel modeling of growth curves. Significant interaction effects of time and condition were observed for psychological flexibility, distress tolerance, psychological symptoms, and the obstruction subscale of valued living. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a modern form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) with growing support for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We present a case wherein a client presented with scrupulosity-related OCD. We briefly review scrupulosity, explain the theory behind ACT, and present a case, the treatment process, and desired outcomes. Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is described from an ACT perspective and discussed as an option for people with OCD who may be reluctant to engage in more traditional forms of ERP.

Developing a daily habit of consuming fruits and vegetables (FV) in children is an important public-health goal. Eating habits acquired in childhood are predictive of adolescent and adult dietary patterns. Thus, healthy eating patterns developed early in life can protect the individual against a number of costly health deficits and may reduce the prevalence of obesity. At present, children in the United States (US) under-consume FV despite having access to them through the National School Lunch Program. The two-year college graduation rate is at an all-time low. Curricular and program designs are not making the sweeping changes needed for the outcomes desired. The present study examined persistence and relapse of reinforced behavioral variability in pigeons. Pigeons emitted four‐response sequences across two keys. Sequences produced food according to a lag schedule, in which a response sequence was followed by food if it differed from a certain number of previous sequences. In Experiment 1, food was delivered for sequences that satisfied a lag schedule in both components of a multiple schedule. When reinforcement was removed for one component (i.e., extinction), levels of behavioral variability decreased for only that component. First-generation students, who represent more than 40% of entering college freshmen, have lower academic achievement and struggle to persist compared to their continuing-generation peers. Although previous studies have repeatedly shown a deficit model for first-generation students, there is still a lack of clear understanding about the heterogeneity that exists among these college students. While some do struggle to persist, others show marked resilience. The purpose of this study was to examine athletic and academic identity and athletic and academic motivation in DIII student-athletes. An additional purpose of the study was to explore the extent to which identity and motivation variables could predict GPA. This study also qualitatively explored students’ perceptions of their success, identity and motivation. Using Expectancy-Value and Identity theories as a theoretical framework, participants (n = 358) were administered an online survey that included AAIS and SAMSAQ scales along with open-ended qualitative questions. Few projects have combined quantitative and qualitative approaches in the analysis of facilitated communication as did this study of a 17-year-old nonverbal autistic male responding to homework questions using facilitated communication. Findings were consistent with prior studies: Tim was minimally able to produce correct responses independent of facilitator influence under controlled conditions; whereas, at least some typed messages in the spontaneous narratives appear to be his authentic communications independent of facilitator control.

Motivation is an important predictor of educational success, as is socioeconomic status. This study used Expectancy Value Theory (EVT) and a person oriented approach as the framework to explore how motivation profiles may be related to context, namely socioeconomic status (SES), and the roles these profiles have in predicting education outcomes. Five motivation variables: math self-efficacy, reading self-efficacy, control expectation, action control, and utility value (instrumentation motivation) were used in latent profile analysis to determine four latent motivation profiles from a national sample of 10,981 10th grade students using ELS:2002 data. Hoarding is associated with functional impairment and impacts quality of life. One process that has been theorized to explain how hoarding develops and leads to impairment is psychological inflexibility, in which behavior is rigidly controlled by a perceived need to regulate internal experiences, at the expense of more effective, valued actions. The present study aimed to test the mediational role of psychological inflexibility in the development of hoarding and its impact on life satisfaction with a sample of 489 college students completing an online survey. Objective: This study examined whether self-help (books, websites, mobile apps) increases help seeking for mental health problems among college students by minimizing stigma as a barrier. Participants and Methods: A survey was conducted with 200 college students reporting elevated distress from February to April 2017. Results: Intentions to use self-help were low, but a significant portion of students unwilling to see mental health professionals intended to use self-help. Greater self-stigma related to lower intentions to seek professional help, but was unrelated to seeking self-help. Similarly, students who only used self-help in the past reported higher self-stigma than those who sought …

Despite its prevalence, quality treatment for trichotillomania is often difficult to find. The use of telepsychology has been an effective method for disseminating treatment services for a variety of mental health conditions. However, no research has examined the use of telepsychology to treat trichotillomania. This randomized controlled trial used Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Enhanced Behavior Therapy delivered by way of telepsychology to treat trichotillomania in adults. The study compared an active treatment condition (n = 12) to a delayed treatment waitlist control condition (n = 10). Delay discounting refers to one process by which an individual devalues delayed outcomes. Typical discounting tasks provide no information about events during delays to larger-later rewards. Imposing opportunity costs during the delay increases how steeply delayed rewards are discounted (P. S. Johnson, Herrmann, & Johnson, 2015). The present research evaluated whether distress tolerance (i.e., one's ability to tolerate distressing emotions and events) is related to discounting rates when opportunity costs are low, high, or unspecified. There is growing evidence for the efficacy of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) interventions delivered through smartphones, but research has not yet focused on how to optimize such interventions. One benefit of mobile interventions is the ability to adapt content based on in-the-moment variables. The current randomized controlled trial evaluated whether an ACT app that tailored skill coaching based on in-the-moment ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) would be more efficacious than the same app where skill coaching was random or an EMA-only condition. Psychological flexibility is the act of being open to internal experiences while pursuing valued life directions and has been implicated in positive mental health. A lack of psychological flexibility has been implicated in a wide range of mental health problems. In most research, assessment of psychological (in)flexibility has been done with the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire – II (AAQ-II), yet researchers have noted that items on the AAQ-II may not adequately discriminate between responses to experiences and the experiences themselves. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาผลจากการใช้โปรแกรมการฝึกการสนับสนุนอิสระด้วยตนเองที่มีต่อความยึดมั่นผูกพันของนักศึกษา กลุ่มตัวอย่างในการวิจัยเป็นนักศึกษาโครงการขยายโอกาสทางการศึกษาที่กำลังศึกษาอยู่ในระดับปริญญาบัณฑิตชั้นปีที่ 1 ภาคเรียนที่ 2 ปีการศึกษา 2561 สถาบันอุดมศึกษาในกำกับของรัฐแห่งหนึ่ง มีรูปแบบการวิจัยเชิงทดลอง (Experimental Research) แบบแผนการทดลอง แบบสุ่มตลอด (Completely Randomized Design : CRD) นักศึกษากลุ่มตัวอย่างจำนวน 70 คน ถูกสุ่มเพื่อเข้าเป็นกลุ่มทดลองและกลุ่มควบคุม กลุ่มละ 35 คน โดยมีเครื่องมือในการวิจัยคือ โปรแกรมฝึกการสนับสนุนอิสระด้วยตนเอง และแบบวัดความยึดมั่นผูกพันของนักศึกษา การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดย ค่าเฉลี่ย (Mean) ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน (Standard deviation) จากนั้นการเปรียบเทียบความแตกต่างของค่าเฉลี่ยระหว่างช่วงเวลาของการวัดค่าเฉลี่ยของคะแนนของความยึดมั่นผูกพันของนักศึกษาโดยใช้การวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนทางเดียวแบบวัดซ้ำ (one-way repeated measures ANOVA) และสถิติทดสอบทีแบบอิสระ (Independent sample t – test) ผลการวิจัยสรุปได้ดังนี้ 1) กลุ่มทดลองมีค่าเฉลี่ยคะแนนความยึดมั่นผูกพันของนักศึกษาในระยะหลังการฝึกและระยะติดตามผลสูงกว่าก่อนการได้รับฝึกอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 (F (2,136) = 69.30 , p =.00, ηp 2 = .421) และ 2) ในระยะหลังการฝึกและระยะติดตามผลกลุ่มทดลองมีค่าเฉลี่ยคะแนนความยึดมั่นผูกพันของนักศึกษาสูงกว่ากลุ่มควบคุมอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ.05 (t (68) = 8.35, p = .00, d = 1.65, t (68) = 7.85, p = .00, d = 1.55 ตามลำดับ)

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1. เพื่อวิเคราะห์ประสบการณ์และผลการช่วยเหลือทางการศึกษาที่มีต่อกรอบความคิดเติบโตและทักษะทางการคำนวณของนักเรียนที่มีภาวะเสี่ยงทางการเรียนรู้ด้านคณิตศาสตร์ 2. เพื่อออกแบบต้นแบบการช่วยเหลือทางการศึกษาเพื่อส่งเสริมกรอบความคิดเติบโตและทักษะทางการคำนวณของนักเรียนที่มีภาวะเสี่ยงฯจากข้อมูลประสบการณ์ของนักเรียน 3. เพื่อวิเคราะห์ผลของการใช้ต้นแบบการช่วยเหลือทางการศึกษาที่มีต่อกรอบความคิดเติบโตและทักษะทางการคำนวณของนักเรียนที่มีภาวะเสี่ยงฯ กระบวนการวิจัยประยุกต์ใช้ กระบวนการการคิดเชิงออกแบบ (design thinking process) เป็นแนวทางหลักในการดำเนินการวิจัย ซึ่งแบ่งการวิจัยและผลการวิจัยเป็น 3 ระยะ ดังนี้ ระยะที่ 1 ดำเนินการสังเกต การสัมภาษณ์กึ่งโครงสร้าง และการวิเคราะห์เอกสาร เพื่อวิเคราะห์ประสบการณ์และผลการช่วยเหลือทางการศึกษาที่มีต่อกรอบความคิดเติบโตและทักษะทางการคำนวณศึกษากับนักเรียนที่มีภาวะเสี่ยงทางการเรียนรู้ด้านคณิตศาสตร์ ในระดับชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ 3 จำนวน 5 คน (นักเรียนกลุ่มเป้าหมาย) ผู้ปกครองนักเรียน 5 คนและครู 3 คน ผลการวิจัยระยะที่ 1 พบว่า ที่ผ่านมานักเรียนกลุ่มเป้าหมายไม่เคยได้รับการช่วยเหลือทางการศึกษาอย่างเป็นทางการ มีเพียงการสอนเสริมจากครูเป็นครั้งคราว ผู้ปกครองนักเรียนเคยให้นักเรียนเรียนเสริมหลังเลิกเรียนแต่ปัจจุบันไม่มีนักเรียนคนใดเรียนเสริมหลังเลิกเรียน นักเรียนกลุ่มเป้าหมายร้อยละ 80 เชื่อว่าตนเองไม่มีความสามารถในวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ ครูและผู้ปกครอง มีความเชื่อว่าสติปัญญาเป็นสิ่งที่ส่งผ่านทางพันธุกรรม ครูผู้สอนคณิตศาสตร์เชื่อว่า ศักยภาพในการเรียนรู้ของสมองเรียนรู้ได้อย่างจำกัด ลักษณะที่เป็นปัญหาจากการช่วยเหลือที่ผ่านมาคือ กิจกรรมวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ไม่ตอบสนองการเรียนรู้ของนักเรียน การให้ข้อมูลป้อนกลับแก่นักเรียนในเชิงตัดสิน นักเรียนกลุ่มเป้าหมายมีความรู้สึกเชิงลบต่อการเรียนวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ ระยะที่ 2 นำผลการศึกษาประสบการณ์ในระยะที่ 1 มานิยามปัญหาและใช้เป็นข้อมูลในการดำเนินการอภิปรายกลุ่ม (focus group discussion) เพื่อการระดมความคิดเพื่อออกแบบต้นแบบการช่วยเหลือจากครูผู้เชี่ยวชาญซึ่งเลือกมาแบบเจาะจงจำนวน 4 คน จากนั้นสังเคราะห์ผลจากการอภิปรายกลุ่มร่วมกับต้นแบบเชิงทฤษฎีที่สังเคราะห์จากเอกสารและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง และออกแบบต้นแบบการช่วยเหลือทางการศึกษาฯ ที่จะนำไปใช้ในระยะที่ 3 ผลการวิจัยระยะที่ 2 พบว่า ต้นแบบดังกล่าวประกอบไปด้วยกิจกรรมทั้งหมด 10 กิจกรรม กิจกรรมละ 60 นาที แต่ละกิจกรรมแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ขั้น คือ ขั้นเสริมสร้างกรอบความคิด ขั้นคณิตคิดสนุก/สนุกคิด และขั้นปลุกพลังในตัวเอง ระยะที่ 3 ดำเนินวิจัยเชิงทดลองเพื่อวิเคราะห์ผลของการใช้ต้นแบบการช่วยเหลือทางการศึกษาที่มีต่อกรอบความคิดเติบโตและทักษะทางการคำนวณ โดยผู้ให้ข้อมูลคือ นักเรียนที่มีภาวะเสี่ยงฯ จำนวน 3 คนและ ครู (ผู้ใช้ต้นแบบฯ) ที่ได้รับการคัดเลือกโดยใช้เกณฑ์ ผลการวิจัยระยะที่ 3 พบว่า หลังเข้ารับการทดลองนักเรียนทุกคนมีคะแนนกรอบความคิดเติบโตเพิ่มขึ้น มีคะแนนกรอบความคิดเติบโตเฉลี่ยหลังการทดลองเท่ากับ 20.67 (SD. …

Positive Psychological Interventions (Positive Education) uses a multidimensional approach that includes fostering beliefs and developing a growth mindset to reduce anxiety and psychological distress and improve well-being. Positive education has been shown to improve secondary students’ engagement, well-being and self-efficacy, impacting achievement. Seligman’s (2011) PERMA framework with its elements of positive emotions, engagement, relationship, meaning and accomplishment has been successfully used to assess positive education strategies in schools. Engaging in principles of good Scholarship of Teaching and Learning practice elucidates communication pedagogy and offers communication scholars opportunities to contribute to both the Communication discipline and a(n) (inter)national body of scholarship.
