Predicting Adolescents’ Future Intentions To Seek Help For Mental Health Problems., Coralie J. Wilson
Predicting Adolescents’ Future Intentions To Seek Help For Mental Health Problems., Coralie J. Wilson
Frank Deane
This study examined whether high school students’ current symptoms of general psychological distress, self-rated social problem-solving skills, and recent help-seeking experiences predict their future intentions to seek help for a mental health problem. At Time 1, 98 high school students, aged 12-17 years, completed the study self-report survey that included measures of psychological distress, social problem-solving skill, and recent help-seeking behaviour. At Time 2, three weeks later, the same students completed measures of help-seeking intentions. Students with more severe levels of distress symptoms at Time 1 had lower intentions to seek help for a mental health problem at Time 2. …

“Socializing” Achievement Goal Theory: The Need For Social Goals, Ronnel B. King
“Socializing” Achievement Goal Theory: The Need For Social Goals, Ronnel B. King
Ronnel B King
Cultures shape the types of goals that students pursue in the classroom. However, research in achievement goal theory seems to have neglected this cultural aspect with its exclusive focus on individualistically-based goals such as mastery and performance goals. This emphasis on mastery and performance goals may reflect Western individualist psychological thinking. Thus, social goals, which may be more salient in collectivist cultures, are relatively neglected. There is a dearth of studies investigating the role of social goals in academic motivation, and the few studies that did explore them are somewhat problematic. This paper reviews research done within the achievement goal …
Sparkle Of Existential Time As A Sanctuary In Marital Counselling, Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.
Sparkle Of Existential Time As A Sanctuary In Marital Counselling, Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.
Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.
Nowadays, Existential thought is considered to be a practical approach among psychologists and counsellors . Nevertheless, what seems to be ignored is paying thoughtful attention to all dimensions of Existential thought which is an essential matter among counsellors and psychologists. Moreover, some issues in Existential thought such as time are disregarded among marital counsellors as well as individual counsellors. The goal of this article is to allocate exhausting existential time to benefit marital counsellors. Findings show that existential time has full potential to be applied for marital counselling. Furthermore, review of the related literature demonstrates that there is not enough …
Efficiency Of The Existential Time Training On The Marital Satisfaction Among The Iranian Women, Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.
Efficiency Of The Existential Time Training On The Marital Satisfaction Among The Iranian Women, Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.
Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.
The importance of time as an essential part of every individual’s life cannot be ignored. Additionally, while experts in various areas of science and technology have their own perspective of time, the existential philosophers interpret time in their own particular way. Existential concern regarding the notion of time is not considered in existential counselling as much as several other existential elements. Although the possibilities and abilities of existential time are of great importance on the matrimony, there is a notable gap in experimental research regarding the application of this concept in matrimony. Furthermore, the concern among the counsellors in employing …

Sociocultural Dynamics Of Esl Learning (De)Motivation: An Activity Theory Analysis Of Two Adult Korean Immigrants, Tae-Young Kim Dr.
Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)
This study examines the longitudinal trajectories of two Korean ESL immigrants’ L2 learning motivation from an Activity Theory perspective. Two highly skilled immigrants participated in the monthly semi-structured interviews over a period of 10 months. The research questions are as follows: (1) How does the relationship between ESL learners and their perceived social contexts affect and shape the way in which their ESL learning motivation develops? (2) How can the factors affecting the changes in ESL learning motivation be explained from an Activity Theory perspective? The recurring themes in the monthly interview data were coded and aligned to Engeström’s (1999a) …

Rural Adolescents’ Help Seeking Intentions For Emotional Problems: The Influence Of Perceived Benefits And Stoicism., Coralie J. Wilson
Frank Deane
This paper is the second from a larger multi-cite study developed and led by the third author which explores factors that influence adolescents' help-seeking intentions. Specifically, this paper investigates the extent to which perceived benefits of help seeking, stoicism, gender and symptoms of psychological distress are associated with intentions to seek professional help for emotional problems. A cross sectional self-report questionnaire was administered to adolescents recruited from seven high schools in rural towns in the Riverina region of New South Wales. A total of 778 adolescents were recruited. The sample included 373 male and 404 female participants between 13 and …
The Effects Of Need For Autonomy And Preference For Seeking Help From Informal Sources On Emerging Adults’ Intentions To Access Mental Health Services For Common Mental Disorders And Suicidal Thoughts., Coralie J. Wilson
Coralie J Wilson
Emerging or early adulthood is the life stage spanning 18-25 years of age. In Australia, anxiety and affective disorders (often classified as ‘common mental disorders’) are prevalent in this age group and suicide is also a concern. Professional mental health care can reduce the long-term impact of these mental health problems and protect against the development of severe forms of these disorders. However, up to three-quarters of young people with mental health needs do not seek professional help for their condition. This study aimed to examine the extent to which belief in the need for autonomy and intentions to seek …
