The purpose of this study was to (1) determine the effectiveness of utilizing positive reinforcement techniques to improve listening awareness during the process of receiving verbal instructions; (2) evaluate the use of reinforcement schedules with and without positive reinforcement; (3) determine to what extent a formal program utilizing reinforcement procedure compares with the absence of such procedure in a classroom.

The study was initiated to determine whether or not certain skills which are necessary to the development of good speech could be programed. Students utilizing programed instruction techniques would be able to practice skills which were formerly acquired during regular therapy sessions and, therefore, have the benefit of therapeutic services at their own discretion. The literature has suggested that delinquents are characterized by a reading disability and a negative self-concept. The problem was to determine if there was a significant correlation between the measured self- concept and reading achievement, self-concept and IQ, and reading achievement and IQ of Institutionalized Juvenile Delinquents. A secondary purpose of the study was to determine if there was a significant difference between the self-concept of the present sample and the self-concept of the standardization sample used in the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale.
