How To Enhance Research Visibility & Citations, Nader Ale Ebrahim
Nader Ale Ebrahim
Increase your research visibility in the academic world in order to receive comments and citations from fellow researchers across the globe, is essential. Because, The number of citations contributes to over 30% in the university rankings. Therefore, most of the scientists are looking for an effective method to increase their citation record. Publishing a high quality paper in scientific journals is only the mid point towards receiving citation in the future. The balance of the journey is completed by advertising and disseminating the publications by using the proper “Research Tools”. Nader who has developed a method for increasing the visibility …

Exploring The Factors That Influence And Motivate Female Students To Enroll And Persist In Collegiate Stem Degree Programs: A Mixed Methods Study, Rosemary L. Edzie
Rosemary L Edzie
Nationally, the need for an increase in interest, enrollment, and degrees awarded from science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree programs continues to suffer. While students are enrolling in collegiate STEM degree programs, it is not occurring at a rate that meets the workforce demand. In addition to the concern that there is not a sufficient amount of collegiate STEM majors, there is a concern over too few females enrolling and persisting in collegiate STEM degree programs. This mixed methods sequential exploratory research study considered the factors that influence and motivate undergraduate female students to enroll and persist in collegiate …
Developing Transfer Skills In A Biochemistry Class, Jeong V. Choe
Developing Transfer Skills In A Biochemistry Class, Jeong V. Choe
Jeong Choe
Students seem to struggle with transferring prior knowledge if the new problem they are given is in a different form from the way they learned the material. The process of transfer can be identified by four components: 1) recognizing the similarity between the old and new contexts; 2) identifying the potential of a certain skill or concept that has worked in the past, to give solutions to new problematic situations; 3) mental testing of the application of the potential solution; and 4) an attempt to apply the skill or concept to a new context (Georghiades 2000). These four components are …

"Where Do The Bears Go?" The Value Of Child-Directed Play, Genan Anderson, Anita Spainhower, Ann Sharp
Genan Anderson
This article uses the socio-dramatic play of pre-K children to reinforce the rich learning that occurs in child-directed play. The teacher’s role in supporting the play through adapting the environment with props and space as well as intentional teaching through the use of open-ended questions, suggestions, modeling, and providing additional information is made explicit. The authors voice strong support for the importance of play in early childhood classrooms to build competence in common core standards and to assist in the development of executive functioning, problem solving, and self-regulation.
A Basic Qualitative Study Investigating The Use Of Differentiated Instruction In A High School Art Classroom, Kristen Bartkowski
A Basic Qualitative Study Investigating The Use Of Differentiated Instruction In A High School Art Classroom, Kristen Bartkowski
Kristen Bartkowski
The initial purpose of this study was to understand how one art teacher applied aspects of differentiated instruction in her art classroom. In the review of literature, I documented research and theories about differentiated instruction, which showed an overlap between theories of constructivism and differentiated instruction.
The methodology relied on a basic qualitative case study in which I played the role of participant as observer. Through the use of observation, interview, and document analysis, I sought to uncover aspects of differentiated instruction that one high school art teacher applied in her classroom over a period of twelve weeks for one …

The Role Of Interdisciplinary Gis And Data Curation Librarians In Enhancing Authentic Scientific Research In The Classroom, Benjamin D. Branch, Michael Fosmire

Data science is a recently evolved area of scientific inquiry, where data, often collected by others, is analyzed by independent investigators to draw new conclusions. As such, data literacy needs to be incorporated into authentic research activities. The earth sciences in particular have a trove of data that resides in national data centers as well as individual investigators’ labs, which can be repurposed to provide the inputs for students to make their own inquiries into the data. With the amount of data available, students can make more substantive conclusions than if relying just on data they’ve collected themselves.

This poster presents an overview of ongoing work in the Computer Science Department to assess the learning oc-curring in multiple undergraduate courses in an analytical manner which will facilitate semester-to-semester and in-stitution-to-institution comparisons. It describes the types of assessments created (which are course-specific based on ACM model content areas identified as covered by the instructor), their use, data analysis and the conclu-sions which can be drawn. Limited initial data is also pre-sented.
The Trading Card Effect, Adam Epstein
The Trading Card Effect, Adam Epstein
Adam Epstein
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate a teaching method that I have used for the last several years and have found to be effective particularly during the challenging final weeks of the semester. I reward students with trading cards for answering questions currently during an unannounced quiz to provide positive reinforcement in an engaging way. Students ultimately form teams and receive a relevant and classic football, baseball, basketball, hockey, or other trading card that they can keep as a souvenir to the class and the course. The intent is to give something to the students directly relevant to …

The Rhetorical Oracle: A Fun Introduction To Rhetoric, Dan Gleason
The Rhetorical Oracle: A Fun Introduction To Rhetoric, Dan Gleason
Dan Gleason
In this lesson students meet three key rhetorical schemes – anaphora, antithesis, and chiasmus – in a fun, engaging way. The students share some common concerns related to school (e.g., too much homework, not enough time with friends, bad grades on essays); after a student raises an issue, that student is given a slip of paper with a relevant (and rhetorical!) sentence or two to read aloud. With these rhetorical pronouncements, students hear the patterns of the three schemes in an engaging and personal way. The teacher can then follow up with a more detailed account of the rhetorical patterns.

Extract At some stage, career teachers experience the feeling of a growing distance between them and their students. Probably their students sense it too. This is inevitable and natural. After all, as educators age and their student cohorts remain within a narrow range of ages, the relative age gap widens. The gap sensation can also be caused by a seismic generational shift and by a change in life circumstances (like having one’s own children). Technology may produce growing distance between teachers and learners too and being dynamic, it may seem the most profound. Naturally, many educators want to resist but …

This poster presents work on building a 3d scanner. A 3d scanner is a device that analyzes a real-world object to collect data on its shape and or appearance. The collected data can then be used to construct digital 3d models. The scanner is made up of 50 Raspberry Pi computer boards and cameras. We will construct 12 arms each holding four cameras per arm. The purpose of this is to be able to scan anything and produce a 3d model that we then would be able to send to the 3d printer or use in a video game or …

Assessing students’ live performances is challenging because the marker needs to make complex judgements often very quickly while at the same time recording information and viewing the performance. The challenge increases when multiple markers are involved and moderation of marks is required. It can be difficult to maintain sound assessment principles, such as fairness and validity, and to offer students quality and timely feedback. This paper describes a two phase, qualitative, action research project which trialled the use of an innovative, digital technology-supported assessment tool designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of assessment and moderation of live performances. The …

Using Ipad2 To Assess Students' Live Performances And Actively Engage Students With Tutor And Peer Feedback, Julia Wren, Alistair Campbell, John Heyworth, Christine Lovering

Assessing student live performances can be challenging because markers need to make quick and often complex judgements about the learning while at the same time record information and watch the performance. This is further challenged where multiple markers are involved and moderation between markers is required. Maintaining fairness and validity throughout the assessment process can consequently become a significant issue. Moderation of assessment can cause a delay in the turnaround time for student feedback because markers need to meet and review. In addition, the ‘busy type of work’ associated with compiling and sorting individual marks and distributing them to students, …

The Mobile Learning Initiative (MoLI) works with faculty members on exploring and designing mobile solutions. A communications faculty member contacted our Mobile Learning Initiative (MoLI) group to explore using a mobile solution for a class activity where students would be able upload images, text, and audio from around the city and display it on a map where others could search and filter the results. Using Google Fusion Tables we were able to setup a method for students to add content, including images, addresses, and details regarding the location that could be filtered and viewed on a Google map. We worked …

This article analyses the process by which higher education in Latin America is being digitalised, and how it is radically
changing the educational dynamics in the region. The incorporation of digital technology implies a transformation of traditional distance education and the creation of new distance education dynamics. Indeed, some institutions are now offering fully online programmes, and there is a general increase in the digitalisation of face-to-face teaching. This study analyses the state of the art of the educational changes brought about by educational digitalisation in Latin America, and characterises the various aspects of it. It also describes the slow …

The challenges facing the United States in educating its youth have been widely documented. The dropout rate in the past decades has been staggering, hovering around the 20% mark, with students of color and in lower socio-economic circumstances posting an even higher rate (Barton, 2005). Perhaps more troubling are the indicators that students who are staying in school until high school graduation are largely disengaged and disenfranchised with their experiences (Balfanz, Herzog, & MacIver, 2007; Henry, Knight, & Thornberry, 2012). However, educators are now beginning to embrace the promise of ubiquitous digital technologies in the classroom. This study examines the …

Things That Matter To Residents In Nursing Homes And The Nursing Care Implications, Nila Reimer
Things That Matter To Residents In Nursing Homes And The Nursing Care Implications, Nila Reimer
Nila Reimer
A move toward care of residents in nursing homes where they are respected and heard is finally emerging. Common strategies used in nursing homes to improve quality of care for residents are integration of person-centered care and assessing care using satisfaction surveys. Although approaches of integrating person-centered care and satisfaction surveys have been valuable in improving nursing home quality, strategies of care that include things that matter from residents’ perspectives while living in nursing homes need investigation. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to describe things that residents age 65 and older state matter to them while living …

Children’S Enjoyment Of Play During School Lunchtime Breaks: An Examination Of Intraday And Interday Reliability, Brendon P. Hyndman, Amanda Telford, Caroline Finch, Shahid Ullah, Amanda Benson
Dr Brendon P Hyndman
Background: Enjoyment and play during school lunchtime are correlated with children’s physical activity. Despite this, there is an absence of studies reporting children’s enjoyment of play during school lunchtime breaks. The purpose of this study was to examine the intraday and interday reliability of children’s enjoyment of school lunchtime play. Methods: Surveys used to assess children’s enjoyment of lunchtime play were distributed to and completed by 197 children (112 males, 85 females), aged 8–12 years attending an elementary school in Victoria, Australia. Children completed the surveys during class before lunch (expected enjoyment) and after lunch (actual enjoyment) for 5 days. …

Journals In The Field Of Higher Education: A Racial Analysis, Donald Mitchell Jr., Jamillya Hardley, Darius Jordan, Michael Couch
Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D.
Too often, scholarship regarding the concept of race in the United States is absent from top-tier journals across fields. Yet, at some institutions, faculty, including scholars who explore race, are required to publish in top-tier journals to secure tenure. This article highlights the extent to which journals—of all tiers—within the field of higher education publish articles explicitly highlighting race in the study. The authors used Bray and Major’s (2011) article, “Status of Journals in the Field of Higher Education” as the data source for the sample. Using a systematic approach, the authors surveyed journals in the field of higher education …
