Because of the individuality of his sport, the track man is motivated, primarily, through self-satisfaction - through knowing that he has accomplished something on his own. Track men have little hope for material gain through their sport, yet, paradoxically, they are the most dedicated, self-sacrificing group of athletes in the world.
