The 1995 Nrc Ratings Of Doctoral Programs: A Hedonic Model, Ronald G. Ehrenberg, Peter J. Hurst

Articles and Chapters

We describe how one can use multivariate regression models and data collected by the National Research Council as part of its recent ranking of doctoral programs (Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States: Continuity and Change) to analyze how measures of program size, faculty seniority, faculty research productivity, and faculty productivity in producing doctoral degrees influence subjective ratings of doctoral programs in 35 academic fields. Using data for one of the fields, economics, we illustrate how university administrators can use the models to compute the impact of changing the number of faculty positions they allocate to the field on the ranking ...

Rising Temperatures: Rising Tides, Prof. Elizabeth Burleson

Prof. Elizabeth Burleson

Transboundary environmental problems do not distinguish between political boundaries. Global warming is expected to cause thermal expansion of water and melt glaciers. Both are predicted to lead to a rise in sea level. We must enlarge our paradigms to encompass a global reality and reliance upon global participation.

The Impact Of Intergovernmental Grants-In-Aid On Public School Expenditure Under The Segregated School System , Se-Koo Rhee Jan 1996

The Impact Of Intergovernmental Grants-In-Aid On Public School Expenditure Under The Segregated School System , Se-Koo Rhee

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the fiscal behavior of local public school districts under the segregated schools system in Maryland with the emphasis on the relative response of school expenditure to intergovernmental grants-in-aid between black and white schools. The median voter model was employed to derive theoretical demand specifications for both no-nonresidential-property-tax-shifting and partial-shifting assumptions. The theoretical model derived here is unique in the sense that inter-racial factors are included to determine the demand for education in black and white schools, since the provision of public education services was decided simultaneously by the median voter who was presumed to be white;A ...

Feasibility Study And Design Of A Merit Pay Plan For Principals , Lawrence Edward Sessions

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Merit pay has been around for almost a century in American education. Most school districts attempting merit pay have discontinued those plans after a few years. The apparent failures might be partially the result of poor design or implementation; The primary purpose of this study was to conduct a feasibility study and to design a model merit pay plan for principals that will be acceptable to principals, upper-level administrators, and school boards. The intent of this plan is to improve principal effectiveness in school leadership while indirectly increasing student performance;Qualitative research and case study methods were used to conduct ...
