A Comparison Of Traditional Education And Project-Based Education In Construction Management, Trey Miller Jan 2018

A Comparison Of Traditional Education And Project-Based Education In Construction Management, Trey Miller

University Honors Program Theses

Construction is a rapidly moving and constantly changing industry. The skills needed to manage the complex task of running a job site safely, on schedule, and within budget, are unique to the field. Construction Management as an academic field is relatively new discipline. Therefore the field is still rapidly evolving. In many cases, classes are taught by engineering professors, which leads to an engineering-focused education as opposed to a Project Management focused education. Therefore Construction Management students are not receiving the “hands-on” experience early enough in their studies. By structuring classes around an applied project, students will attain a more ...

Girls Only Science: Motivating Adolescent Females To Pursue Stem Careers, Madeline Cuckow Jan 2018

Girls Only Science: Motivating Adolescent Females To Pursue Stem Careers, Madeline Cuckow

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Over the last five years, much attention has been drawn to the large deficit of females in STEM careers and fields. Most attribute this failure to colleges not turning out enough female STEM majors. Contrary to this belief, research suggests a young woman's aptitude for STEM related fields begins much earlier, and declines without intervention.

This project details the research of why there is a gender gap in STEM, what is being done educationally, my unique case study to test the research conducted, and the implications of that research.

Teaching The Strand Of Ccss Slope Through Metacognition In Middle School, High School, And Advanced Placement Mathematics, Sara Snarr Sep 2017

Teaching The Strand Of Ccss Slope Through Metacognition In Middle School, High School, And Advanced Placement Mathematics, Sara Snarr

Sara Snarr

The strand of slope presents every year from 7th grade through Advanced Placement Calculus. The Common Core Learning Standards require and encourage a thorough understanding of slope and slope-related concepts such as unit rate, parallel and perpendicular lines, and the derivative. Unfortunately, many secondary mathematics teachers struggle to teach students to monitor their process and conceptualize an overall strategy for solving complex and fundamental problems. This thesis examines the role of metacognition-focused instruction on achievement, and offers research-supported teaching methods in the context of slope and unit rate that support metacognition. These methods are then presented in a series of ...

Computer-Technology Helper, Pauline H. Lake Apr 2013

Computer-Technology Helper, Pauline H. Lake

Senior Theses and Projects

The Computer-Technology Helper is a digital repository that allows educators to view, edit, create, upload, and comment on teaching materials related to Computer Science and Technology. More importantly, it provides a social space in which educators can collaborate and share teaching ideas. The application also includes membership management that allows for differentiation in user roles and user access. Since there is a lack of Computer Science and Technology in K-12 schools, having a website like the Computer-Technology Helper is a great way to provide educators with access to Computer Science and Technology teaching resources and provide a support system for ...

Nebraska Reading First Winter Report 2005-2006, Guy Trainin, Oren Yagil Mar 2006

Nebraska Reading First Winter Report 2005-2006, Guy Trainin, Oren Yagil

Research and Evaluation in Literacy and Technology

The Winter Progress Report offers an overview of student mid-year achievement. Student achievement will be interpreted through two separate comparisons. In each section we start with a comparison of this year’s winter achievement and last year’s mid-year achievement; a between cohorts comparison. This comparison will show whether the mid-year achievement of Reading First schools is higher than last year as we anticipated. A second comparison focuses on following student achievement from fall to winter of 2005-2006 school year. This within cohort comparison shows the sustainability of this year’s baseline.

The Potential Of Elearning In The Spatial Information Sciences: A Resource For Continuing Professional Development., Kevin Mooney, Audrey Martin Jan 2004

The Potential Of Elearning In The Spatial Information Sciences: A Resource For Continuing Professional Development., Kevin Mooney, Audrey Martin

Conference Papers

National mapping agencies have at their disposal a number of resources for the continuing professional development of their staff. These range from attendance at full-time University programmes to short in-house tutorials and workshops. The Dublin Institute of Technology has recently developed an eLearning course in ‘Co-ordinate reference systems for spatial information’ and piloted it with staff of Ordnance Survey Ireland and the Department of Lands and Surveys, Nicosia, Cyprus. This paper evaluates the performance of eLearning in the delivery of the pilot courses pointing to its weaknesses and its strengths. The need for considered and careful use of interactive tools ...
