Family therapists have a unique opportunity to contribute toward the reduction of widespread mental health disparities impacting diverse populations by developing applied lines of research focused on cultural adaptation. For example, although evidence-based prevention parent training (PT) interventions have been found to be efficacious with various Euro-American populations, there is a pressing need to understand which specific components of PT interventions are perceived by ethnic minority parents as having the highest impact on their parenting practices. Equally important is to examine the perceived cultural relevance of adapted PT interventions. This qualitative investigation had the primary objective of comparing and contrasting …

Institute for Student Learning Assessment
The phenomenon of learning abroad will not diminish in an increasingly globalized economy and it is important to better understand the interconnectedness of relationships, benefits, and potential detriments in this growing area of education. This study is an exploration of conceptualizations of nationality in educational spaces from a transnational perspective. I create a co-constructed narrative with a transnational student that traverses the borders of two nations, while considering the relations and practices of her experiences in association to my own in order to better understand national identity formation as it is interconnected with formal and implicit curriculum.

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
The Honors College (HC) was asked by the FIU Provost to take the lead in creating an innovative culture for undergraduate research at FIU. Our presentation is about how two of the elements of HC’s successful research program have been expanded university-wide: our Conference for Undergraduate Research (CURFIU) and our research opportunity database, the FIU Undergraduate Research Portal. The creation of this database provides an interactive site with information about research opportunities, conferences, scholarships, and a subscription system for students. We also discuss the challenges we face as we try to promote undergraduate research in an environment of limited resources.

Florida Distance Learning Association Conference
Flipped model of instruction for online instruction is effectively being used by faculty in higher education. What is the flipped classroom? The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture elements of a course are reversed. Short video or recorded lectures are viewed by students before the online session. The online session is devoted to facilitating the knowledge, understanding, and discussion of the content. During online class sessions, instructors function as facilitators, encouraging students in individual inquiry. The online session time is focused on exercises, projects, and/or discussion.
Flipped classroom draws on such concepts as active learning …

Creating Art Patterns With Math And Code, Boyan Kostadinov
Publications and Research
The goal of this talk is to showcase some visualization projects that we developed for a 3-day Code in R summer program, designed to inspire the creative side of our STEM students by engaging them with computational projects that we developed with the purpose of mixing calculus level math and code to create complex geometric patterns. One of the goals of this program was to attract more minority and female students into applied math and computer science majors.
The projects are designed to be implemented using the high-level, open-source and free computational environment R, a popular software in industry for …

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
This unit focuses on how students spend free time and comparing and contrasting free time in different cultures. It is intended to be taught in the middle of a Spanish I course. Students will understand that 1) Free time activities enjoyed by young people are often similar despite differences in culture, and that 2) Experiences can change for an individual when shared with someone else and a shared experience can affect relationships between people. By the end of the unit, students will be able to 1. talk about what I/others do and where I/others go in free time, 2.extend an …

Nebraska Library Association: Conferences
This poster presentation discussed how to use LibGuides to improve student learning in the classroom when the curriculum might not otherwise draw upon library resources. LibGuides can be created with links to specific open access resources, articles, and other items (as well as subscription resources) to support course assignments. Course LibGuides bring visibility to library resources that get overlooked and are easy to implement for distance learning or to complement other instructional materials.

Honors Projects
The core of my honors project includes a 12-day unit plan for teaching creative writing in the form of narratives. I created lessons for 12 days, created the materials needed for each day, and created a website where my work has been displayed for my future classroom. The website link is: teachcreatewrite.weebly.com. All materials for the unit plan are broken down by day, and I chose to expand upon 3 days in a short lesson plan template.
