A Comparison Of Traditional Education And Project-Based Education In Construction Management, Trey Miller Jan 2018

A Comparison Of Traditional Education And Project-Based Education In Construction Management, Trey Miller

University Honors Program Theses

Construction is a rapidly moving and constantly changing industry. The skills needed to manage the complex task of running a job site safely, on schedule, and within budget, are unique to the field. Construction Management as an academic field is relatively new discipline. Therefore the field is still rapidly evolving. In many cases, classes are taught by engineering professors, which leads to an engineering-focused education as opposed to a Project Management focused education. Therefore Construction Management students are not receiving the “hands-on” experience early enough in their studies. By structuring classes around an applied project, students will attain a more ...

Informing Students About Academic Integrity In Programming., Simple Simon, Judy Sheard, Michael Morgan, Andrew Petersen, Amber Settle, Jane Sinclair

Amber Settle

In recent years academic integrity has come to be seen as a major concern across the full educational spectrum. The case has been made that in certain ways academic integrity is not the same in computing education as in education more generally, and that as a consequence it is the responsibility of computing educators to explicitly advise their students of the academic integrity requirements of their assessments. As part of a larger project, computing academics around the world were asked a number of questions regarding how they advise their students about academic integrity in programming assessments. Almost all respondents indicated ...

Measuring The Promise Of Big Data Syllabi, Alon Friedman Dec 2017

Measuring The Promise Of Big Data Syllabi, Alon Friedman

Alon Friedman

Growing interest in Big Data is leading industries, academics and governments to accelerate Big Data research. However, how teachers should teach Big Data has not been fully examined. This article suggests criteria for redesigning Big Data syllabi in public and private degree-awarding higher education establishments. The author conducted a survey of 35 Big Data syllabi across different academic institutions in the USA using Palmer, Bach, and Streifer’s rubric criteria. The role of syllabi in higher education has an established tradition in summarising topics covered in a single course and textbook, and in referencing the instructor’s resources. Yet, despite ...

Research indicates that engagement is one of the critical factors in achieving this goal. Come explore a few strategies to enhance student engagement with your content. Strategies can be applied to several presentation methods, but PowerPoint and Prezi will be specifically covered.

Research And Development In Roof-Top Solar Potentiality Using Lidar Technology, Radhey Shyam Meena

Radhey Shyam Meena

Energy security and its application is the key for economic growth to any country and state. The conventional generation is also the source of greenhouse gas emission attributing to global warming and has has adverse impact on climate. Therefore, a global shift towards sustainable renewable energy generation is being witnessed. India is blessed with abundant solar energy and if harnessed efficiently, Solar energy is extremely beneficial as it is non polluting and its generation can be decentralized. The state of Rajasthan receives maximum solar radiation Intensity in India with very low average rainfall. It also has desert land available in ...

Teaching To Increase Diversity And Equity: Scholarship And Practice, Elizabeth Mccormack, Jennifer Spohrer, Esther Chiang, Jancy Munguia

Blended Learning Research and Open Educational Resources

As our classrooms become more culturally and experientially diverse, what can we on our campuses do to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed? Many professional development opportunities aimed at helping faculty enhance their teaching practices often overlook the role of cultural competence in teaching and learning and fail to effectively integrate cultural sensitivity with high impact pedagogies. Factors such as race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status can have a significant impact on a student’s educational experiences. There is a growing body of research that identifies such issues and describes tested strategies for helping both faculty and students ...

Reporting Multiple Imputation: Example Stata Code, Catherine A. Manly, Ryan S. Wells

Ryan S. Wells

The miexample.do file includes Stata code illustrating implementation of the recommended multiple imputation (MI) reporting practices from the article "Reporting the use of multiple imputation for missing data in higher education research," Research in Higher Education, doi: 10.1007/s11162-014-9344-9. After a brief description of the example used in the code (which uses a publicly available, downloadable dataset), a sample paragraph offers possible text for writing up results using MI to handle missing data in this example. In both the sample paragraph and the subsequent example Stata code, the recommended MI reporting practices identified in the article (Table 1 ...
