Integrating Instructional Technology Into A Teacher Education Program: A Three Tiered Approach, Elizabeth Truesdell, Rebecca Birch Jan 2015

Integrating Instructional Technology Into A Teacher Education Program: A Three Tiered Approach, Elizabeth Truesdell, Rebecca Birch

Elizabeth Truesdell

This project description examines how a teacher education program integrated new instructional technology through the creation of a Technology Facilitator position in the department. The project proceeded through a three-tiered system of learning "literacy" to establish a knowledge base amongst faculty members, "augmenting" required courses to model the use of instructional technology, and finally the "transformation" of the credential program where the activity of learning can only be accomplished through leveraging technology. As a professional program housed in a liberal arts institution, this project combines aspects of the essential learning outcomes of the 21st century with the professional skills required …

Two Approaches To Teaching Young Children Science Concepts/Vocabulary And Scientific Problem-Solving Skills, Soo-Young Hong Nov 2013

Two Approaches To Teaching Young Children Science Concepts/Vocabulary And Scientific Problem-Solving Skills, Soo-Young Hong

Soo-Young Hong

This study examined the effectiveness of two different approaches to teaching designed to facilitate children’s learning about science concepts/vocabulary related to objects’ floating and sinking and scientific problem-solving skills: responsive teaching (RT) and the combination of responsive teaching and explicit instruction (RT+EI). Participants included 104 children (51 boys) aged 4 to 5 years. Small groups of children were randomly assigned to one of the two intervention groups (RT, RT+EI) or to a control group. Responsive teaching (RT) reflects a common approach to teaching young children, and the combination approach (RT+EI) includes Explicit Instruction as well as responsive teaching. The two …

Nanoscience For All: Strategies For Teaching Nanoscience To Undergraduate Freshmen Science And Non-Science Majors, Thomas Tretter, M. Jones, Michael Falvo May 2013

Nanoscience For All: Strategies For Teaching Nanoscience To Undergraduate Freshmen Science And Non-Science Majors, Thomas Tretter, M. Jones, Michael Falvo

Thomas Tretter

As the field of nanoscience continues to grow, there is an ongoing need for effective courses that communicate key nanoscience concepts to college students, including students who may not intend to pursue a science-related major. The semester-long course described here targeted first-year college students who are eligible for the course regardless of intended major. Foundational course design elements, including purposes, goals, and pedagogical strategies, are shared from the perspective of the instructor. Two core pedagogical strategies that served as a framework for much of the course included: a) concepts of spatial scale as an organizational schema; and b) the use …

Learning Content / Teaching Language, Emily Purser, Alisa Percy May 2013

Learning Content / Teaching Language, Emily Purser, Alisa Percy

Alisa Percy, PhD

English language teaching in universities is shaped in complex ways by the internationalization of higher education, student mobility and technological development. Within and around English medium universities, educational programs have to respond to changing national, institutional and departmental level understandings of students’ learning needs. In Australia, lecturers across the academic disciplines face, in classrooms and online, a high proportion of students who enter into disciplinary studies before they are quite proficient in the language of instruction – and institutions are required to demonstrate to the national education quality and standards agency (TEQSA) that they are helping international students to develop …

Quasi-Experiment Examining Cafeteria-Style Grading In Social Work Education, Brandon Youker, Lyza Ingraham May 2013

Quasi-Experiment Examining Cafeteria-Style Grading In Social Work Education, Brandon Youker, Lyza Ingraham

Brandon W. Youker Ph.D

Cafeteria-style grading system is an individualized student assessment method whereby students choose their assignments from an expansive and diverse pool of assignments. In this study, students are non-randomly assigned to two sections of the same social work course. The first section received cafeteria-style assignments and grading system (i.e., experimental group) while the comparison section received the traditional method of grading. Students in both sections video record a demonstration exercise; the recordings are reviewed and scored by experts from a panel of social work professors. Preliminary results show an effect on student attendance but no effect on GPA or student performance.

Twenty-First Century College Commentaries, Mary Ferguson Feb 2013

Twenty-First Century College Commentaries, Mary Ferguson

Mary J. Ferguson, Ed. D.

My parents were children of second generation post slavery parents; they valued the educational basics of math, reading and writing. When I revisited the requirements my parents demanded from us as child scholars, it reminded me of how simple things use to be in order to live an educated, simple and responsible life. ‘Go to college’ was their number one educational demand; having lived through the Great Depression, they valued God, education and our country. My siblings were the first generation of college students to obtain higher education or should I say four-year degrees in my family. School was a …

Perspektiven Der Praxisforschung: Partnerschaften Beim Wissensaufbau Und LebensLange Berufliche Entwicklung Von Lehrpersonen, Jennifer Snow-Gerono, Alan Zenkert Jan 2013

Perspektiven Der Praxisforschung: Partnerschaften Beim Wissensaufbau Und LebensLange Berufliche Entwicklung Von Lehrpersonen, Jennifer Snow-Gerono, Alan Zenkert

A. J. Zenkert

Learning On The Spot: Site Based Teacher Education In Australia, Elizabeth Kleinhenz Dec 2012

Learning On The Spot: Site Based Teacher Education In Australia, Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

In recent years, some Australian schools and universities have been moving away from traditional modes of teacher education in which pre-service teachers typically undertake their practicums in ‘blocks’ of about four weeks a couple of times a year, to newer models in which they become attached to a school, spending at least two days a week there, undertaking extra-curricular duties and participating in a variety of activities so that they become more like a teacher who actually works in that school than a visitor. In some site-based models, neighbouring schools have joined in clusters or partnerships together with the university …
