This project description examines how a teacher education program integrated new instructional technology through the creation of a Technology Facilitator position in the department. The project proceeded through a three-tiered system of learning "literacy" to establish a knowledge base amongst faculty members, "augmenting" required courses to model the use of instructional technology, and finally the "transformation" of the credential program where the activity of learning can only be accomplished through leveraging technology. This study examined the effectiveness of two different approaches to teaching designed to facilitate children’s learning about science concepts/vocabulary related to objects’ floating and sinking and scientific problem-solving skills: responsive teaching (RT) and the combination of responsive teaching and explicit instruction (RT+EI). Participants included 104 children (51 boys) aged 4 to 5 years. Small groups of children were randomly assigned to one of the two intervention groups (RT, RT+EI) or to a control group. Responsive teaching (RT) reflects a common approach to teaching young children, and the combination approach (RT+EI) includes Explicit Instruction as well as responsive teaching. The two …

Quasi-Experiment Examining Cafeteria-Style Grading In Social Work Education, Brandon Youker, Lyza Ingraham

Cafeteria-style grading system is an individualized student assessment method whereby students choose their assignments from an expansive and diverse pool of assignments. In this study, students are non-randomly assigned to two sections of the same social work course. The first section received cafeteria-style assignments and grading system (i.e., experimental group) while the comparison section received the traditional method of grading. Students in both sections video record a demonstration exercise; the recordings are reviewed and scored by experts from a panel of social work professors. Preliminary results show an effect on student attendance but no effect on GPA or student performance.

Um eine forschende Einstellung zum Lehrberuf aufzubauen, unterstützen wir angehende Lehrpersonen in ihren Praxisforschungsprojekten in der Schule. Eingebettet in ein Jahr mit wiederholten Kontakten zu einer Grundschulklasse, führen sie in ihrem Praxissemester ein Lehrerforschungsprojekt durch. Dabei beobachten wir eine Spannung zwischen dem Durchführen eines Praxisforschungsprojekts und dem Aufbau einer forschenden Einstellung zum Lehrberuf. Unser eigentliches Ziel wäre die Verankerung einer forschenden Haltung, doch die Studierenden sind auf das Produkt fokussiert und fühlen sich wegen der verlangten Studienleistung oft unter Druck, wodurch ihre und unsere Ziele nicht immer übereinstimmen.
