A panel representing both secondary and higher education discussed the process utilized in Central Ohio through the HS-IHE Alignment Grant to align high school and college curricula and the agreed upon strategies to promote alignment. Discussion included both the alignment of course content and the alignment of the soft skills needed for college and career success. In 2008, the non-profit college access organization, A Call to College, researched the feasibility of extending their services to elementary and middle school students in their partner district, Newark City Schools. This investigation led to a phased, 4-year process to build the PEAK (Providing Early Awareness and Knowledge) Program. PEAK currently provides activity-based programming and specially designed lesson plans for every 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th grader in the district - over 2000 students from 82 classrooms in 11 different buildings. Using the high interest level of the Olympics as a theme, this Power Point begins with uncaptioned photographs representing different sports and scenes from the Olympics. Audience members are asked to talk in small groups and then share out about different ways that scene might be related to college and career readiness. When sharing out is completed with the last slide, the slides are repeated a second time, this time on auto-timer and with a caption that tells a story. A third transition, brings up one of the slides (providing students with the equipment) to segue into a training exercise.
