Infographics, as one type of visual information, are becoming more and more prevalent online, especially on social media sites. Because of the prolific nature of these sites, and the fact that 86% of 18-29 year olds use at least one social media site (Pew Research Center, 2017), it’s important to know how well college students understand infographics. Exploring the findings of a pre- and post-questionnaire given to two journalism classes found that students do not independently evaluate infographics. Critically Reading Images And Critical Call To Action: Establishing Visual Literacy Initiatives At Home And Abroad, Dana S. Thompson

This position paper presents a vision of the future in which education systems and educators worldwide have successfully integrated a visual literacy curriculum into every level of education, from grade school to graduate school. This vision is based on the belief that visual literacy is a core competency and set of skills – such as finding, interpreting, evaluating, using, and creating images – that empowers individuals to participate fully in today’s visual culture by navigating the internet and social media in particular.
