Web Page Design - Student-Community Collaborations, George Kontos Nov 2010

Web Page Design - Student-Community Collaborations, George Kontos

George Kontos, Ed.D.

A collaborative project is described. Students in a web design class were asked to contact local businesses and help them create their web site (collection of related and interconnected web pages). Two phases of the project are described, planning and implementation. Planning defines the purpose and the target audience and also includes a sketch of the website's organization. The project is suitable for both traditional and online classes. Ideally, session participants should have some experience or interest in teaching web design but anyone who wants to know how to help students work collaboratively with the community is welcome to ...

The Impact Of Multiple Computing And Digital Arts Degrees On Undergraduate Recruitment, Amber Settle, Liz Friedman, Mary Jo Davidson

Amber Settle

In this paper, we describe a two-year study of the factors influencing freshman and first-year transfer student enrollment at the College of Computing and Digital Media (CDM) at DePaul University. Our results show that the reputation of the institution, the particular degree programs at DePaul CDM, and to a lesser degree the diversity of degree programs available, were all positive factors for application and enrollment at DePaul. Factors that were not of primary importance included parental influence, the fact that DePaul is a liberal arts institution, and recommendations from relatives and friends.

Blogs & Glogs: Revitalizing Class Projects, Krista Bittenbender Royal

Krista Bittenbender Royal

This workshop looks at two technologies that can be used to energize traditional poster and writing assignments to bring them beyond text: Glogster and Blogger. Both are free, easy to use websites with which students can create web pages with images, text, and audio to share with their classmates and the world. In the workshop, intended for instructors and curriculum coordinators, we will look at each of these platforms, discuss examples of project assignment guides using each of the sites, and talk about other ways they could be integrated into courses. I will also share some student feedback and some ...

Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison Jun 2010

Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison

Rob Morrison

This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does impact how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must deeply engage in discussions on literacy and how information is tied to knowledge that does not limit learners to the Western worldview. Information Literacy will always be an abstract term until integrated into knowledge production.

Librarianship In The 21st Century: Lessons In Leadership, Rob Morrison, Jack Fritts Mar 2010

Librarianship In The 21st Century: Lessons In Leadership, Rob Morrison, Jack Fritts

Rob Morrison

Many of the challenges librarians face in the 21st century have existed for years and reflect the nature of higher education and society in the United States. One issue the presenters have observed is that librarians, like many educators, react to rapidly changing systems, pressures, economics, and technologies by “balancing” workloads and budgets and not by deeply reflecting on how to change strategies in order to integrate themselves more fully into academic curricula, prove the library’s value to administrators, and develop meaningful services and resources. In order to thrive and survive, librarians must be proactive at their institutions in ...

The New Millennium And Online Counseling: Ecological Practice, Concerns And Discussion, Oscar T. Mcknight Mar 2010

The New Millennium And Online Counseling: Ecological Practice, Concerns And Discussion, Oscar T. Mcknight

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

For counselors, the ecosystem is vast and encompassing; and professionals must understand the client in both context and time. This in and of itself is a daunting task; now, enter the New Millennium and on-line counseling. The Web is the poster child of interconnectivedness and interdependence of systems; however, is the Web bringing us closer or further apart? The Web is transforming society and potentially the ecological context of counseling. A review is necessary.

Using Ning For Conversation Partner Networks, Krista Bittenbender

Krista Bittenbender Royal

Providing opportunities for conversation practice is one way that an IEP can help students improve their English as well as enhance their engagement in the language learning process. However, matching individual language learners to fluent English speakers can be difficult and time consuming. This workshop will introduce participants involved in setting up such interactions to Ning, a free online social networking platform which can facilitate the creation of individualized networks. Participants will gain insights into how one IEP used Ning to connect ELLs to university students interested in having conversation partners.
