Engaging Undergraduate Students In Planetary Science Research For Parabolic Flights, Gillian Gomer, Adrienne Dove, Seamus Anderson, Jeffery Jorges, Alexandra Yates Nov 2018

Engaging Undergraduate Students In Planetary Science Research For Parabolic Flights, Gillian Gomer, Adrienne Dove, Seamus Anderson, Jeffery Jorges, Alexandra Yates

Gillian Gomer

Microgravity investigations are key to understanding the behavior or regolith, or dusty granular material, that is ubiquitous on planetary surfaces. We see features on other planets that resemble avalanches and landslides seen here on Earth, while eroded craters and so-called ponds (smooth level dusty deposits at the bottom of some craters) reveal the action of various regolith flow mechanisms. The SLOPEs experiment was designed by an undergraduate group to address questions on the statics and dynamics of granular matter on the surfaces of small Solar System bodies, including a) the flow behavior of granular material along slopes (landslides and avalanches) …

Infographics And Visual Literacy: Teaching Evaluative Criteria To Increase Critical Thinking, Dana S. Thompson Jun 2018

Infographics And Visual Literacy: Teaching Evaluative Criteria To Increase Critical Thinking, Dana S. Thompson

Dana Statton Thompson

Infographics, as one type of visual information, are becoming more and more prevalent online, especially on social media sites. Because of the prolific nature of these sites, and the fact that 86% of 18-29 year olds use at least one social media site (Pew Research Center, 2017), it’s important to know how well college students understand infographics. Exploring the findings of a pre- and post-questionnaire given to two journalism classes found that students do not independently evaluate infographics. However, by utilizing best practices when creating an infographic assignment, it is possible to teach students how to think critically about the …

Leading School-Based Coaching To Evaluate Open Education Resources, Kathryn Moyle Jun 2018

Leading School-Based Coaching To Evaluate Open Education Resources, Kathryn Moyle

Professor Kathryn Moyle (consultant)

This presentation was a people's choice session at the 2018 ISTE conference and engaged participants in conversations about coaching approaches that when coupled with strategies to evaluate Open Educational Resources (OER) can build the capacity of teachers and improve the learning by students. The session provided participants with opportunities to discuss leadership approaches to the evaluation of OER resources that are consistent with education policies, build the capacity of educators and improve the quality of learning by students; and coaching methods for school leaders that enables the identification, analysis, curation and incorporation of OER resources into classroom practices.

How Early Learning Interventions Respond To Diverse International Contexts: A Scoping Review, Jen Jackson, Kashfee Ahmed, Toby Carslake May 2018

How Early Learning Interventions Respond To Diverse International Contexts: A Scoping Review, Jen Jackson, Kashfee Ahmed, Toby Carslake

Toby Carslake

As the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) generate increasing interest in quality early childhood interventions, a challenge remains in identifying which programs achieve outcomes for children in diverse international contexts. This paper focuses on programs to support children's learning: one of the three components of holistic child development identified in the SDGs. The paper presents findings from a scoping review of recent research on interventions to support children's learning in economically developing countries. Building on Rao, Sun, Chen and Ip's 2017 systematic review of the effectiveness of such interventions, it explores in greater detail what can be learned from recent …

Critically Reading Images And Critical Call To Action: Establishing Visual Literacy Initiatives At Home And Abroad, Dana S. Thompson Apr 2018

Critically Reading Images And Critical Call To Action: Establishing Visual Literacy Initiatives At Home And Abroad, Dana S. Thompson

Dana Statton Thompson

This position paper presents a vision of the future in which education systems and educators worldwide have successfully integrated a visual literacy curriculum into every level of education, from grade school to graduate school. This vision is based on the belief that visual literacy is a core competency and set of skills – such as finding, interpreting, evaluating, using, and creating images – that empowers individuals to participate fully in today’s visual culture by navigating the internet and social media in particular.

Be Careful What You Wish For: Unintended Consequences Of Attaining Purpose, Amber Settle Apr 2018

Be Careful What You Wish For: Unintended Consequences Of Attaining Purpose, Amber Settle

Since 2014 a linked-courses learning community has been offered for first-year students in selected majors in the School of Computing (SoC). The students selected for the community are from underrepresented populations in computing, and one of the purposes of the community is to build a sense of belonging among participants as this is connected to retention. In Fall 2017, unlike in previous cohorts, students in the community used social media to connect to each other very early in the quarter, producing a strong sense of community among students. The Fall 2017 programming course associated with the community also had an …

Activate, Motivate, Participate: Strategies To Engage And Motivate Reluctant Students In Literacy., Hope Mounie

Many schools serving low socio-economic families face the challenge of teaching reading to students who lack motivation or the desire to read. This could be caused by many factors. Do these students have the resources to become successful but choose not to, do they not have print rich environments at home, or is literacy not valued? There is a strong link between low socio-economic status and students’ low level of literacy achievement (Ng, C).  Students need to be engaged in order to become self-motivated readers in the future. The ability to read is essential for securing well-paid employment and participating …

This presentation was part of my unpublished research experience in a CTLE Faculty Learning Community (FLC) during the 2017-2018 academic year. It involved incorporating meteorological sensors in Unmanned Aerial Systems (or UAS) in the pedagogical context of meteorology courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Prescott, AZ. The FLC planned the incorporation of UAS sensors and working with the subsequent recorded data into courses during the Fall 2017 semester, implemented the planning during the Spring 2018 semester, and concretely planned to continue similar data gathering activities in future iterations of the courses.

As with all FLCs at ERAU, the commitment …
