A panel representing both secondary and higher education discussed the process utilized in Central Ohio through the HS-IHE Alignment Grant to align high school and college curricula and the agreed upon strategies to promote alignment. Discussion included both the alignment of course content and the alignment of the soft skills needed for college and career success. This Power Point accompanied the presentation by the same name at the 2012 OCAN Conference in Columbus, Ohio.

This session will review the change in philosophy of higher education in the United States from being available only to those that could afford college to the open access and success agenda of today. The influence of the Land Grant colleges and now the community colleges to fulfill this philosophy will be presented. The session will end with a discussion of the challenges facing community colleges as they attempt to serve the U.S. today.

In 2008, the non-profit college access organization, A Call to College, researched the feasibility of extending their services to elementary and middle school students in their partner district, Newark City Schools. This investigation led to a phased, 4-year process to build the PEAK (Providing Early Awareness and Knowledge) Program. PEAK currently provides activity-based programming and specially designed lesson plans for every 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th grader in the district - over 2000 students from 82 classrooms in 11 different buildings. Transfer between state college/universities has changed drastically in the last ten years. The development of Transfer Assurance Guides (TAGs) and Career Transfer Assurance Guides (CTAGs) pathways, Transfer Grading Policy, awarding of college credit for Advanced Placement Exams, and now the Articulation and Transfer Clearinghouse have changed the face of transfer in Ohio in ways that will be far-reaching in effect and will change the way we all send, accept, and apply transfer credits in Ohio.
