Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison
Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison

This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does impact how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must deeply engage in discussions on literacy and how information is tied to knowledge that does not limit learners to the Western worldview. Information Literacy will always be an abstract term until integrated into knowledge production.

Many of the challenges librarians face in the 21st century have existed for years and reflect the nature of higher education and society in the United States. One issue the presenters have observed is that librarians, like many educators, react to rapidly changing systems, pressures, economics, and technologies by “balancing” workloads and budgets and not by deeply reflecting on how to change strategies in order to integrate themselves more fully into academic curricula, prove the library’s value to administrators, and develop meaningful services and resources. In order to thrive and survive, librarians must be proactive at their institutions in areas …

Making It Click: Using An Audience Response System To Engage Students And Assess Learning, Ann Marie Smeraldi
Making It Click: Using An Audience Response System To Engage Students And Assess Learning, Ann Marie Smeraldi
Ann Marie Smeraldi
As accessibility to technology in the classroom increases and promises to improve student engagement and performance, it is easy to be tempted into using wikis, blogs and clickers without fully understanding the implications of their use. Librarians and other educators continuously experiment with new technologies in an attempt to lure Millennials away from their iPods and cell phones, but without careful consideration of the pedagogy that supports the use of these new technologies, their effectiveness as learning tools is diminished. This session will focus on the use of an audience response system (“clickers”) to engage students in active learning during …

Having convenient, instant access to electronic library resources in academia is excellent as research can be conducted literally anywhere and at anytime; however, a level of user self-direction is required for optimal results, creating the need for librarian interaction to guide the user towards acquiring this self-direction most effectively. As more institutions add online degree programs, it is essential that librarians are integrated within so that participating students have access to the same (or at least, equivalent) library resources and services as those who are on campus, and also develop sound research skills for information literacy acquisition. Although librarians have …

Albertsons Library at Boise State University has been slow to move into the ebook arena for a variety of reasons including the inadequacies of simultaneous user models and the uncertainty of ebook technology. However, the most significant question for BSU has been usefulness of ebooks to their patrons. Are ebooks a passing fad or are they the answer to improved access to information? In January 2006, BSU selected a small group of technical books in an electronic format via the ProQuest Safari Tech Books Online database. This session will discuss the rational behind selecting technical books as an introduction to …
