Introduction: There is a need for efficacious lifestyle interventions that promote the mental health and emotional wellness of both healthy and clinical cohorts. Evidence regarding the usefulness of adding human support (i.e. guidance) to improve the outcomes of web- and mobile app-based psychological interventions for clinical populations is mixed,1-3 however little is known about healthy cohorts.

Methods: 458 self-selected participants registered to join a 10-week, web- and mobile app-based, multimodal lifestyle intervention. Educators are amongst a population at risk for exposure to secondary trauma because they have contact with young adults who may have or currently experiencing hardships such as mental health issues, relationship abuse, or financial insecurity. However, despite the vulnerability of educators to secondary trauma, little research has focused on this population or preventative techniques that might mitigate the effects of secondary trauma to educators. The major purpose of this qualitative research was to find out how the Taiwanese university EFL learners felt about learning the five communication strategies of reduction and achievement sets. Besides displaying their teachability (Maleki, 2007; Ogane, 1998) in university classrooms, this study collected qualitative data about students’ feelings and their reflections as they learned the five communication strategies. The samples of this training were twenty-four Taiwanese university students, none of whom majored in English in a Freshman Non-English Majors’ class. This program and presentation addresses the use of factor analysis in program evaluation. Specific focus will highlight the development and selection of marker items. The goal is to label and interpret factors according to targeted questions of interest. Therefore, results are not only descriptive, but predictive - with practical application to student retention and satisfaction. Process is useful for benchmarking best practices; measuring student satisfaction and learning; tracking student participation; evaluating program results; determining future program or service needs; and, assessing effectiveness of delivered programs.

This session will report on an ethnographic study of an English composition class. The researcher observed the class for an entire semester and conducted focus groups and interviews with students and the instructor. The session will describe key activities from the class, including reflections on motivation and learning by both instructors and students. It will conclude with a discussion of how the research findings can help librarians design instruction that engages learners more deeply.
