The Challenges And Rewards Of Co-Chairing A Department: Lessons Learned From Leaders In The Middle, Laura Trujillo-Jenks, Gina Anderson
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
Newly appointed Department Chairs are often on their own to learn “on the job” the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed. One way to mitigate the challenges of this high-stakes approach is to identify a second leader who can serve in the role of mentor, coach or Co-Chair alongside the new Chair. The Co-Chair may be a leader who has served as a Department Chair in the past and/or who is serving in another middle-management position such as a Chair from a different department, Director, or Associate Dean. During a time of tremendous change and uncertainty, the Co-Chair …

The data was gathered from June to September 2021- right at the height of COVID impacts. (This add-on set of scales was attached to the dissertation written by Dr. John Langenderfer, DBA, J.D. “The Role of an Academic Institution’s Organizational Culture in Retaining Employees during an Industry Downturn.”) Because of the time of the data gathering from June through September 2021, Dr. Daake saw this as a unique opportunity to study the impact of a BLACK–SWAN event …

The Impact Of Teacher Methodology Training For Higher Education Faculty Members, Nicole R. Baker
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Many college programs are designed to graduate individuals who are experts in their field of study, but not necessarily individuals who are trained in how to teach. This quantitative, quasi-experiment study examined college faculty member’s level of training in the area of teaching practices and methodology. The relation to student satisfaction, current course performance, attendance, the belief in the need for training, and faculty member’s sense of efficacy in teaching was explored. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to organize the data using a one-way ANCOVA to analyze the impact the level of training had on …

Records Management in the Office of the Registrar and the Academic Integrity Office in Library and Learning Services worked together to centralize academic integrity data by creating a customized application in PeopleSoft that stores academic integrity remediation status, sends reminder emails to complete remediation, sends student and faculty status of incomplete remediation and stores breach record(s) and supporting documentation gathered from the investigation process. Records can be accessed by administration and program support staff and can assist in decision making as it pertains to sanctioning and appeals. Next steps include storing a reflective piece from students on what was learned …

Succeeding With Problem Faculty: A 6-Step Guide, Kent Crookston
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
In Crookston’s recent national survey, 3,000 academic leaders identified “dealing with problem faculty” as the issue with which they most wanted help; it was their stand-alone top concern. Problem colleagues in any organization include bullies, jerks, passive-aggressives, poor performers, and those who are psychologically distressed. Crookston draws from best-selling business and leadership literature, and presents six calculated steps for effectively dealing with a challenging colleague. Participants leave this workshop with sound practical guidance on how to act when things go wrong, but more importantly how to ensure that things go right.
The Major Dilemma, Erin Bohan
The Major Dilemma, Erin Bohan
Senior Honors Projects
The variety of academic majors offered by universities seems to become more eclectic each year. From public relations to environmental economics to 3D graphics, the coursework and journeys taken by students across the country are exceptionally diverse. The University of Rhode Island offers over 100 majors, making it undeniable that some disciplines are disparate. My project calls attention to similarities in an area where the focus is customarily on the contrary. Before students were categorized, they all faced the same question – “What should my major be?”
At an age where we search for ways to identify ourselves, we often …

Recently, we launched a new companion site, focused on faculty issues and pedagogies that lead to technology use. This session will invite participants to explore the site and provide feedback.
