This expert witness report was commissioned by the Queensland Teachers’ Union in April, 2018 as part of evidence to be presented in a submission to the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission. The purpose of this report was to review research that would assist the Commission in arriving at its decision regarding appropriate remuneration levels for certified Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers.

The study presented in this article examines the use of comic books, TOON comic books, during guided reading. The instruction with this comic book series was provided to struggling readers, kindergarten through fifth grade,
by the pre-service teachers enrolled in the Early Literacy and Literacy Assessment and Applications courses at a comprehensive university in southeastern United States. Results indicate that instruction with the TOON comic books helps students to develop in their literacy skills.

Education and literacy researchers have acknowledged educational merit in reading instruction that integrates authentic reading texts, such as comic books, which meet the needs of today’s multi-modal learners. This qualitative multi-case study explores how three pre-service teachers use a comic book series known as TOON books during guided reading instruction to improve the literacy skills of three elementary students in third and sixth grades who struggled with reading and/or writing. This study was conducted to better understand the performance of the XCOR Lynx vehicle. Because the Lynx development was halted, the best knowledge of vehicle dynamics can only be found through simulator flights. X-Plane 10 was chosen for its robust applications and accurate portrayal of dynamics on a vehicle in flight. The Suborbital Space Flight Simulator (SSFS) and Mission Control Center (MCC) were brought to the Applied Aviation Sciences department in fall 2015 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach campus. One defining element of life in any Catholic educational institution, whether it be primary, secondary, or tertiary, is the focus on pastoral care for staff and students. This paper provides a distinctly Catholic definition of the term ‘pastoral care’ and briefly examines the theological foundations that underpin this concept, particularly, in relation to its application in the Catholic university. The paper traces the motif of pastoral care through the Scriptures and, building on insights from St. Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Constitution on Catholic Universities, Ex Corde Ecclesiae (1990) and the broader theological anthropology of the Vatican II Council. This applied dissertation was designed to provide deeper insight to current knowledge about establishing teaching presence (TP) in online courses. Distance education environments are considered more convenient than traditional learning environments, as they provide more opportunities for learning that occurs in various settings. In distance education environments, effective learning should focus on the interaction between e-learning technologies and educational practice in higher education. Online courses are typically devoid of the visual cues and interaction of the traditional classroom. We report on initial outcomes of the Taste of Computing project, under which a meaningful computer science course has been initiated in many high schools of the Chicago Public Schools system. Surveys of students have shown that they attribute high value to the course and have experienced increases in their understanding and interest regarding the computing field. Data was also collected from teachers participating in professional development regarding their preparation and confidence in teaching the new course. As part of the Taste of Computing project, the Exploring Computer Science (ECS) instructional model has been expanded to many high schools in the Chicago Public Schools system. We report on initial outcomes showing that students value the ECS course experience, resulting in increased awareness of and interest in the field of computer science. We compare these results by race and gender. The data provide a good basis for exploring the impact of meaningful computer science instruction on students from groups underrepresented in computing; of several hundred students surveyed, nearly half were female, and over half were Hispanic or African-American.

Faculty of institutions of higher learning have an opportunity to discuss, debate, and discern how to create
workplaces that are just and inclusive. As members of Jesuit institutions, we have a moral obligation to do so. How, then, can Jesuit universities justify the poor treatment of contingent faculty, who are now a majority not just in our institutions but in the country as a whole? Tenure-track employment is a fading tradition in universities throughout the United States.
