Parental involvement is an integral variable that bears a significant value in the overall academic achievement and learning process of a student’s educational journey. Therefore, all parents should play a major role in their children’s academic success from elementary through middle and high school. The prime focus of this research was to examine the perceptions of middle school parents and find strategies to build effective relationships between the school and home. This dissertation makes recommendations for the reform of graduate education to better serve current and future two-year college English instructors. The author undertakes historical and archival research to write a history of how English instructors have been prepared for the distinct profession of two-year college teaching. In addition, the author interviews two-year college English instructors from around the United States to chronicle their preparation narratively and how said preparation has affected their working experience. Our introductory middle grades course meets on-site in a partner school. This context for the course derives from an overall emphasis on partnerships in our College of Education. Meeting on-site affords teacher candidates more continuity in a middle level classroom so that they can observe young adolescents and middle level teaching. At the early stage of our program, this course meeting on-site helps prepare teacher candidates to contribute positively to schooling for young adolescents.
