Women Scholars, Integration, And The Marianist Tradition: Learning From Our Culture And Ourselves, Mary Ellen Seery, Shauna M. Adams, Kathryn Kinnucan-Welsch, Connie L. Bowman, Patricia R. Grogan, Laurice J. Joseph

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

In the fall of 1997, a group of junior tenure-track women faculty in the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Dayton decided to meet regularly in order to support each other’s scholarly endeavors in the process of achieving promotion and tenure. The group of subsequently became known as the Writing-Writers’ Support Group (WWSG). In 2000, the group conducted a self-study of its group process to determine how the formation of women’s WWSG fit with the mission and characteristics of a Marianist university. The results suggest that, although each of the characteristics could be identified in the group processes, …

Book Review: Learning And Not Learning English: Latino Students In American Schools, Edmund T. Hamann Mar 2002

Book Review: Learning And Not Learning English: Latino Students In American Schools, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In this poignant short volume, Valdés is adamant: Latino students, specifically the thousands of Latino newcomer students who start their U.S. schooling at the secondary level, deserve a chance to learn English and to continue their development of other academic skills. She is also blunt: typical U.S. schooling of Latino newcomers is multiply inadequate and inappropriate. Thus the goal of promoting English mastery is compromised, as are these students’ overall academic opportunity horizons. Though her initial problem diagnosis—that current ESL programs poorly serve most students in them—may superficially agree with the problem diagnosis of neoconservative crusaders such as Ron Unz, …

Book Review - Schooling- The Symbolic Animal: Social And Cultural Dimensions Of Education, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This is an excellent book that brings together under one cover many of the most important ideas of the fields of anthropology and qualitative sociology of education or, to use the editor Bradley Levinson's more expansive phrase, of "the interpretive social sciences" (p. 1). The book is divided into five sections, plus an introduction and an afterword. Each section begins with an introductory essay authored by the section editor. Bradley Levinson is the author of the book's introduction and editor of the first section ("Section I: The Symbolic Animal: Foundations of Education in Cultural Transmission and Acquisition"). Section 11, "Culture, …

Education And Policy In The New Latino Diaspora, Edmund T. Hamann, Stanton Wortham, Enrique G. Murillo Jr. Feb 2002

Education And Policy In The New Latino Diaspora, Edmund T. Hamann, Stanton Wortham, Enrique G. Murillo Jr.

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Increasing numbers of Latinos (many immigrant, and some from elsewhere in the United States) are settling both temporarily and permanently in areas of the United States that have not traditionally been home to Latinos-for example, North Carolina, Maine, Georgia, Indiana, Arkansas, rural Illinois, and near resort communities in Colorado.' Enrique Murillo and Sofia Villenas have called this the New Latino Diaspora (Murillo and Vienas, 1997). Newcomer Latinos are confronted with novel challenges to their senses of identity, status, and community. Instead of arriving in settings, like the Southwest, where Latinos have lived for centuries, those in the New Latino Diaspora …

Homeschooling: An Overview, Deborah Abell Feb 2002

Homeschooling: An Overview, Deborah Abell

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Even though homeschooling is not a new concept, it was a relatively small movement until 30 years ago. By the late 1990's, there were over a million students being homeschooled in the United States and the numbers seem to be growing quickly. Homeschooling has become a viable alternative to traditional education. No longer a peripheral movement, it now reflects the diversity of American society. Even though homeschooling is receiving increased attention in the popular press, there is a paucity of research on the subject (Knowles, 1988). This study is the first of its kind and reports the results of a …

"We're From The State And We're Here To Help": State-Level Innovations In Support Of High School Improvement, Edmund T. Hamann, Brett Lane Feb 2002

"We're From The State And We're Here To Help": State-Level Innovations In Support Of High School Improvement, Edmund T. Hamann, Brett Lane

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

As any good Maine educator knows, the idea in the title of this paper, that "we're from the state and we're here to help" is an oxymoron. In a part of the United States that defiantly prides itself on perpetuating traditions like town meetings and other versions of direct or almost-direct democracy, being told what to do by someone else, particularly by someone pulling rank, is viewed skeptically-- to put it mildly (Ruff, Smith, & Miller, 2000). Yet on school visit after school visit, we heard a staffer of the Center for Inquiry on Secondary Education (CISE), which is centrally …

¿Un Paso Adelante? The Politics Of Bilingual Education, Latino Student Accommodation, And School District Management In Southern Appalachia, Edmund T. Hamann Feb 2002

¿Un Paso Adelante? The Politics Of Bilingual Education, Latino Student Accommodation, And School District Management In Southern Appalachia, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Latino educational policy. More specifically, it describes how a broad but vague consensus regarding the goals of a novel binational partnership hid the differences in various partners' interests and understandings. Looking at both a Georgia superintendent's initial letter to his prospective partners at a Mexican university and then at the experiences of a Mexican university-affiliated bilingual education coordinator, the chapter highlights the interface between culture, policy, and power, illuminating how and why only certain portions of the formal binational accord were enacted and then only in certain ways. The chapter describes the political posturing, advocacy, and maneuvering that shaped the …

Maps-Ii Study Final Report For The Initiative “Museums And Public Schools” On Behalf Of Museums In The Park And Chicago Public Schools, Steven R. Rogg

Steven R Rogg

The Museums and Public Schools (MAPS) initiative intends to “create a lasting impact on teaching and learning by integrating museum resources into the educational process and serve as a national model.” It is conceived as a “sustained partnership of museums and schools, students and teachers,” engaging them in “authentic learning experiences.” This is to be accomplished primarily via the explicit incorporation of relevant (as indicated by the Chicago Academic Standards) cultural, historical, and scientific resources of Chicago’s world-class museums into the curriculum of Chicago Public Schools. The result is to be an experience of education that is powerfully rich, engaging, …

How Elementary School Teachers Learn To Teach Mathematics, Phyllis Schneider Kirschner Jan 2002

How Elementary School Teachers Learn To Teach Mathematics, Phyllis Schneider Kirschner

Educational Studies Dissertations

This study examines how elementary school teachers learned to teach mathematics during their pre-service education and during their first few years of teaching. The study identifies those experiences teachers found to be most significant in their development as mathematics teachers. All seven teachers in this study had been taught using procedural methods and each had to find a way to integrate conceptual mathematics education into their own understanding. The study examines the teachers' motivations for pursuing this understanding and the circumstances that provided opportunities to do so.

A Qualitative Investigation For Designing Intermediate (Grades 4-6) Information Literacy Instruction: Integrating Inquiry, Mentoring, And On-Line Resources, Melissa Ruth Gibson

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Information literacy has become a priority in education. Elementary school library media specialists daily encounter the dilemma of having to teach information literacy skills without having time to do it adequately. With the proliferation of computers in schools, the possibility exists that students could use web-based information literacy tutorials or guides when teachers or librarians are not available. This study examines fifth grade students' perceptions of using on-line, web-based assistance to help them work through a research process, the Big6 . Qualitative research was conducted in 1998-1999 with ten students of diverse background and reading ability who were ten or …

Editorial Introduction, Gordon Wells Jan 2002

Editorial Introduction, Gordon Wells

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

This issue of Networks is particularly interesting for the wide variety of articles it includes. They range from a high school science teacher's report of the strategy she used to improve her students' reading comprehension and the statistically significant result of her intervention, through contributions co-authored by collaborating partners in different institutions, to a practitioner's "ruminations" that intermingle poetry and prose on the relationship between teaching and research . Together, they demonstrate the many ways in which practitioner inquiry can be approached as well as the variety of genres in which it can effectively be shared.

Using Concept Maps To Aid Reading Comprehension In A High School Biology Classroom, Cynthia H. Joseph Jan 2002

Using Concept Maps To Aid Reading Comprehension In A High School Biology Classroom, Cynthia H. Joseph

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

Teachers are always looking for innovative ways to help students improve their reading comprehension in subject matter materials. One popular method is the use of graphic organizers such as concept maps. This study examined the use of concept maps to aid reading comprehension of science articles by 10th grade students (n=49) in a Florida high school biology classroom. By comparing scores on reading comprehension tests for two articles, one read without concept mapping and one read while doing a concept map organizing key themes and ideas in the article, significant evidence for the effectiveness of concept mapping was found for …

A Teacher Educator's Action Research: Facilitating Preservice Teachers Becoming Writers And Writing Teachers, Merry Boggs Jan 2002

A Teacher Educator's Action Research: Facilitating Preservice Teachers Becoming Writers And Writing Teachers, Merry Boggs

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

Raising test score requirements will not improve writing skills of college students--it will only serve as a gatekeeper, excluding students who cannot write on demand from becoming teachers. My goal as a teacher educator is to find ways to facilitate preservice teachers becoming writers and teachers of writers---not to exclude them from the program. Dr. Glenn Blalock, a writing professor well versed in process writing, agreed that raising the bar on a writing test would not ensure our students improved writing skills, but asserted that providing meaningful writing activities might. I decided that I could create writers' groups with my …

Returning Education Research To Teachers: Education Research As Advocacy, Mark Girod, Michael Pardales, Gina Cervetti Jan 2002

Returning Education Research To Teachers: Education Research As Advocacy, Mark Girod, Michael Pardales, Gina Cervetti

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

This article represents the collaborative efforts of three teachers. Each of us is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a Research I university, struggling with the pressures and stresses of balancing newfound researcher voices with our teacher voices. Although this is collaborative, it is written in the first person as our voices mingle a reflection of our experience. We hope other teachers will find our ideas compelling, resonant with their own, and feel moved to action in the style we suggest. Education research should be the domain of teachers and this is a call for teachers to take …

Mercury In A Sieve: A Search For Meaning In The Responses Of Prospective Teachers, Barbara G. Pace, Jane S. Townsend, Susan Nelson Wood Jan 2002

Mercury In A Sieve: A Search For Meaning In The Responses Of Prospective Teachers, Barbara G. Pace, Jane S. Townsend, Susan Nelson Wood

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

Investigative, inquiry projects are frequently used in teacher education programs to help prospective teachers develop as critically responsive practitioners who respond to diversity. In this article we examine our effort to explore the influence of these projects. As we trace our exploration of data gathered from respondents, 90% of whom were white women, we disclose how relational priorities surfaced in the data, how these priorities complicated our readings, and how they led us to consider gender and relationship in the lives of the participants. We raise questions about the process that might be used to understand what preservice teachers are …

A Calling Of Circles: Ruminations On Living The Research In Everyday Practice, Carl Leggo Jan 2002

A Calling Of Circles: Ruminations On Living The Research In Everyday Practice, Carl Leggo

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

I begin with a narrative of living the research in everyday practice. The story of teaching is always a tangled story. The story of teaching is a story that we can never get right because the right ways are often found only by pursuing or even stumbling in the wrong ways. Most of my students know me as a gentle and generous teacher with a constant store of words of encouragement. I relate to my students out of an abiding sense of desire to help them know their desires. My desire is to call out my students' desires. But for …

A Future Teachers Conference – A Vehicle To Retain, Inform, And Inspire New And Prospective Teachers, J. Kasabian, L. Fathe, J. M. Dewar

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The Los Angeles Collaborative for Teacher Excellence (LACTE) Future Teachers Conference is a day-long learning event for beginning and pre-service K-12 math and science teachers. The Conference provides information, resources and connections tailored to the needs of prospective and new teachers. A unique aspect of the conference is that a group of new and future teachers serve as partners with college faculty on the planning committee. Thus the Conference not only serves to educate new and future teachers, but also provides leadership training for the planning team members; and, the presence of prospective and new teachers on the planning team …
