This presentation introduces the Peer Review of Teaching project for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The faculty fellowship program is described and the process by which faculty create course portfolios is explained. How portfolios are used for formative and summative assessment are discussed.

In the fall of 1997, a group of junior tenure-track women faculty in the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Dayton decided to meet regularly in order to support each other’s scholarly endeavors in the process of achieving promotion and tenure. The group of subsequently became known as the Writing-Writers’ Support Group (WWSG). In 2000, the group conducted a self-study of its group process to determine how the formation of women’s WWSG fit with the mission and characteristics of a Marianist university. In this poignant short volume, Valdés is adamant: Latino students, specifically the thousands of Latino newcomer students who start their U.S. schooling at the secondary level, deserve a chance to learn English and to continue their development of other academic skills. She is also blunt: typical U.S. schooling of Latino newcomers is multiply inadequate and inappropriate. Thus the goal of promoting English mastery is compromised, as are these students’ overall academic opportunity horizons. Though her initial problem diagnosis—that current ESL programs poorly serve most students in them—may superficially agree with the problem diagnosis of neoconservative crusaders such as Ron Unz, …

Increasing numbers of Latinos (many immigrant, and some from elsewhere in the United States) are settling both temporarily and permanently in areas of the United States that have not traditionally been home to Latinos-for example, North Carolina, Maine, Georgia, Indiana, Arkansas, rural Illinois, and near resort communities in Colorado.' Enrique Murillo and Sofia Villenas have called this the New Latino Diaspora (Murillo and Vienas, 1997). By the late 1990's, there were over a million students being homeschooled in the United States and the numbers seem to be growing quickly. Latino educational policy. More specifically, it describes how a broad but vague consensus regarding the goals of a novel binational partnership hid the differences in various partners' interests and understandings. Looking at both a Georgia superintendent's initial letter to his prospective partners at a Mexican university and then at the experiences of a Mexican university-affiliated bilingual education coordinator, the chapter highlights the interface between culture, policy, and power, illuminating how and why only certain portions of the formal binational accord were enacted and then only in certain ways. How Elementary School Teachers Learn To Teach Mathematics, Phyllis Schneider Kirschner

This study examines how elementary school teachers learned to teach mathematics during their pre-service education and during their first few years of teaching. The study identifies those experiences teachers found to be most significant in their development as mathematics teachers. All seven teachers in this study had been taught using procedural methods and each had to find a way to integrate conceptual mathematics education into their own understanding. The study examines the teachers' motivations for pursuing this understanding and the circumstances that provided opportunities to do so.

An in-service training manual with effective strategies for managing students' behavior was designed for Primary Schools in Belize. The techniques and materials included are based on a review of relevant literature, best practices and appropriate resources collected from elementary and middle schools in the United States and one primary school in Belize. The manual will provide school principals and teachers with criteria for developing school-wide discipline plans, programs for encouraging and recognizing good behavior, and effective classroom behavior management and intervention strategies.

They range from a high school science teacher's report of the strategy she used to improve her students' reading comprehension and the statistically significant result of her intervention, through contributions co-authored by collaborating partners in different institutions, to a practitioner's "ruminations" that intermingle poetry and prose on the relationship between teaching and research . Together, they demonstrate the many ways in which practitioner inquiry can be approached as well as the variety of genres in which it can effectively be shared.

Teachers are always looking for innovative ways to help students improve their reading comprehension in subject matter materials. One popular method is the use of graphic organizers such as concept maps. This study examined the use of concept maps to aid reading comprehension of science articles by 10th grade students (n=49) in a Florida high school biology classroom. By comparing scores on reading comprehension tests for two articles, one read without concept mapping and one read while doing a concept map organizing key themes and ideas in the article, significant evidence for the effectiveness of concept mapping was found for …

Investigative, inquiry projects are frequently used in teacher education programs to help prospective teachers develop as critically responsive practitioners who respond to diversity. In this article we examine our effort to explore the influence of these projects. As we trace our exploration of data gathered from respondents, 90% of whom were white women, we disclose how relational priorities surfaced in the data, how these priorities complicated our readings, and how they led us to consider gender and relationship in the lives of the participants.
